Courier loading boxes into the back of a Same Day Courier Services van

A parcel service without the network rules

Parcel networks are built for volume. To keep the price per parcel low, they need every box to fit the same pattern: within a weight band, under a size limit, labelled with a printed barcode, and handed in by a cut-off time or dropped at a shop. That works well for most things. It doesn't work when a parcel is awkward, heavy, late or needed today.

Our same day parcel delivery skips those rules because there's no network. We send a van to your address, the driver collects the parcel, and drives it straight to the recipient. You don't weigh it to the nearest kilogram to pick a price band, and you don't need a label printer.

  • No size or weight bands. We need the dimensions and weight to choose the right van, not to put the parcel in a pricing bracket.
  • No labels or printers. The driver gets the job details on their device.
  • No drop-off shops or lockers. We collect from your door, whether that's a warehouse, an office or your kitchen table.
  • No cut-off times. We run 24 hours a day, so you book when the parcel is ready.

Long and heavy parcels that networks turn away

Many standard parcel services limit individual parcels to roughly 20–30 kg and a length well under 2 metres, and anything near those limits often costs extra or is refused. Check your usual carrier's current rules, but these are the parcels that most often end up with us:

Parcel Why networks struggle How we'd send it
A 2.2 m roll of flooring or fabric Over the length limit, won't fit conveyors SWB or LWB van, laid flat
A 55 kg boxed motor or pump Over the per-parcel weight limit Small or SWB van, with help to load
A 1.9 m flat-pack worktop Long, easily damaged on a sorter LWB van, kept flat and strapped
Ten heavy cartons for one address Priced per parcel, may split across vans One van, delivered together
Odd shapes: a bike frame, a light fitting, a sign Hard to pack to network standards Carried as it is, secured in the van

Rough guide to which van takes what: a small van has typical load space of about 1.8 m long, an SWB van about 2.4 m and an LWB van about 3.4 m. Exact figures depend on the vehicle model and we confirm at booking. Our van size guide shows them side by side. For sofas, appliances, machinery and other things that are more "item" than "parcel", see our large item courier service.

Small parcels that just need to arrive today

At the other end of the scale are small parcels that only matter because of timing. A sample a customer needs to see before signing off a production run. A replacement part for a van stuck at a customer's site. An online order that went to the wrong address and has to be put right before a weekend event.

Size doesn't make these cheaper by much, because the cost is mainly the vehicle and the drive. What keeps the price down is booking the smallest suitable van, which for a shoebox-sized parcel is a small van. Retailers dealing with mis-shipped or high-priority orders will find more on our retail and ecommerce courier page.

Collection and delivery, step by step

  1. Book with the details

Both addresses, contact names and mobile numbers, the parcel's size and weight, when it's ready and when it must arrive.

  2. Get a fixed price

We quote before collection and give you an estimated collection time based on the nearest suitable vehicle.

  3. Hand it to the driver

Have it packed and at the door. The driver checks it, loads it and sets off directly.

  4. Delivered and signed for

The recipient signs on the driver's device and you receive proof of delivery with their name and the time.

Packing still matters, even though the parcel will only be handled twice. Use a sturdy box, fill the gaps and tape the seams. Our guide to packing fragile items for a courier covers the details. Goods in transit cover is included; for limits, see our terms, and give us the value when you book.

An honest note on price

If your parcel is a normal box, within the usual size and weight limits, and it can arrive tomorrow or the day after, a parcel network will almost always be cheaper than we are. We'd rather say so than sell you a van you don't need.

Same day parcel delivery earns its price when the delivery has to happen today, when the parcel doesn't fit a network, or when the cost of it going missing in a depot is higher than the cost of a dedicated vehicle. For parcels that must arrive early tomorrow rather than today, our next day courier service is worth a look, and for anything with a hard deadline this afternoon, see our urgent courier service.

FAQ

Common questions

Do I need to print a label for a same day parcel?

No. The driver receives the collection and delivery details electronically, so you don't need a printer or a shipping label. We do suggest writing the recipient's name and address on the parcel, or taping a note to it, so anyone handling it at the other end knows who it's for. That's especially useful when it's going to a busy reception or a goods-in bay.

What's the heaviest parcel you can take?

There's no per-parcel weight band. The limit is the van's payload and what can be loaded safely. A small van typically carries up to around 500 kg, and larger vans more, though exact figures depend on the vehicle model. For anything over about 25 kg, tell us so we know whether help with lifting is needed at either end, and whether a van with a tail lift makes sense.

Can you collect several parcels and deliver them to different addresses?

Yes. If the parcels go to several recipients on the same day, we can plan the drops in a sensible order on one van. That's a multi-drop booking, and it's usually better value than separate jobs. Send us the addresses and any time windows, and we'll quote the run as a whole.

Can I send a parcel from home?

Yes. We collect from homes as well as businesses, anywhere in mainland UK. Just make sure someone is in when the driver arrives and the parcel is packed and ready by the door. For a delivery to a home address, give us the recipient's mobile number, so the driver can call ahead if needed.

What can't I send as a parcel?

We don't carry hazardous goods that fall under ADR rules, such as flammable liquids, gas cylinders, corrosives or loose lithium batteries, and we don't carry live animals. If you're unsure about an item, tell us what it is when booking and we'll confirm. Cash and valuables may have insurance restrictions, so declare the value and we'll check cover before collection.
