No motorway, so plan honestly
Norwich has no motorway. The A11 is now dual carriageway all the way to the M11 near Cambridge, which makes the route south and to London quicker and more predictable than it used to be. The A47 runs east to Great Yarmouth and west to King's Lynn and Peterborough, and the A140 heads south to Ipswich and north to Cromer. Large sections of the A47 west of the city and the A140 are single carriageway, where one slow vehicle or a set of roadworks can add real time.
We think it is better to tell you that up front. A courier who quotes a motorway average for a Norfolk journey is setting you up for a late delivery. When you book, we work back from your deadline using realistic timings for the actual roads, and we confirm an estimated collection time based on where the nearest suitable dedicated vehicle is.

Insurance, finance and professional services
Norwich has a long history as an insurance city, and insurers, financial services firms, solicitors and accountants still employ thousands of people in offices around the city centre and at Broadland Business Park off the A47 to the east. Their urgent work is mostly paper and hardware: signed originals, sealed bundles for a hearing, a laptop replacement for an executive working away, or a box of files moving between offices.
Those consignments go in a dedicated van with no other stops, and they are signed for by a named recipient. If you need the same run every day or every week, our scheduled courier service sets it up as a booked route.
Norwich Research Park
On the south-west edge of the city, Norwich Research Park brings together the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, the University of East Anglia and research institutes in plant science, food and health. Labs on the park send samples, reagents and equipment to partners across the UK and into Europe, and receive them in return.
For those jobs, the essentials are:
- Packaging by the sender. Diagnostic samples as UN3373 Category B must be in P650 triple packaging before collection.
- A chilled vehicle where needed. We agree the temperature range with you, and can provide temperature records where the vehicle supports them.
- A named contact at each end. Research buildings often have their own goods-in arrangements.
Our medical and pharmaceutical courier page covers this in more detail. For consignments that must go to a European partner institute, the European courier service runs a dedicated van by road, with the customs paperwork handled through the appropriate agent.

Food and farming
Norfolk grows a great deal of the country's vegetables, sugar beet, cereals and poultry, and a lot of it is processed and packed in and around Norwich. Same-day work from the food sector tends to be one of three things: chilled product that must reach a customer or retailer depot today, samples going to a lab or a buyer, or a replacement part for a packing line that has stopped mid-shift.
Chilled consignments travel in a refrigerated van with the temperature agreed at booking. Packing-line parts go in whatever van suits the weight and size, straight from the supplier to the engineer waiting for them.
Around the city
Inside Norwich, the inner ring road and the outer ring road (the A140 and A1042) carry most traffic, and the Broadland Northway (A1270, formerly the Northern Distributor Road) links the A47 at Postwick with the A1067 and the airport side of the city. The centre itself has narrow medieval streets, pedestrianised areas and limited loading, so a city-centre collection goes faster if you name the nearest loading point.

FAQ
Common questions
How long does a same-day run from Norwich to London actually take?
Central London is about 117 miles away, and the A11 and M11 route normally takes around two and a half hours outside peak times. Allow more in the morning and evening rush, and on summer Fridays, when the M11 and North Circular are at their busiest. For a fixed delivery time, we plan from the deadline backwards and tell you the latest sensible collection time.
Can you deliver to Great Yarmouth or Lowestoft for offshore work?
Yes. Great Yarmouth is around 20 miles east on the A47, and Lowestoft about 30 miles south-east. We deliver to landside addresses: the supply base, the port gate, the agent's office or the goods-in point the site tells us to use. Getting onto a quay or to a vessel depends on the operator's security rules, so give us the contact and any pass reference when you book.
Our produce needs to stay chilled. Can you collect from a farm or packhouse outside Norwich?
Yes. Book a refrigerated van and tell us the temperature range, the number of crates or pallets and how the goods are packed. We agree the range at booking; many chilled food producers specify 0–5 °C, and most chilled food must be kept at 8 °C or below. Rural collections are fine, but tell us about narrow lanes, weight limits or yard access so we send a vehicle that can reach you.
Can you take signed documents from a Norwich insurer to a London office today?
Yes. Documents leave in a dedicated van with no other stops, and the person you name at the other end signs for them, with the time recorded on the proof of delivery. If the deadline is late afternoon, a morning collection is comfortable. Our legal and financial courier page explains how sealed bundles and originals are handled.
Is a next-day early-morning delivery better than same-day for Norfolk?
Sometimes. If the goods are not ready until late afternoon and the destination is the Midlands or the North, an evening collection with an overnight run and an early-morning delivery may suit you better than a late same-day arrival. We run 24 hours a day, so both options are available. Our overnight courier page explains how that works.
