Port deliveries: landside, and planned around the ship

Southampton is one of the busiest ports in the country for cruise ships, containers and vehicles. The Eastern Docks and Western Docks host the cruise terminals (Ocean, City, Mayflower, QEII and Horizon), while the container terminal at the western end handles deep-sea shipping. On a busy summer day, several cruise ships can turn around within hours of each other, with thousands of passengers, lorries and taxis moving through the dock gates.

That is the context for most of our port work. A ship needs a spare part, a set of documents, a medical supply or a replacement piece of galley equipment, and it needs it before departure. We deliver to the landside point that the ship's agent or the terminal tells us to use: a security gate, a stores reception area or an agent's office. The agent and the port handle the rest. We do not have quayside or airside access, and we do not promise it.

For a delivery to a ship or terminal

  • Ship name and terminal, and the date of the call
  • The ship's agent's name and mobile phone number
  • Any delivery reference or purchase order the agent has issued
  • The latest time the agent can accept goods before sailing
  • Dimensions and weight, so the van and the handover suit the stores team

We do not have a depot in Southampton or drivers stationed in the city. When you book, we allocate the nearest suitable dedicated vehicle and confirm an estimated collection time based on where it is. We work 24 hours a day, which matters when a ship arrives at dawn and sails in the late afternoon.

Marine trades around the Solent

Away from the big terminals, Southampton Water and the Solent support a dense network of marine businesses: boatbuilders and yards on the River Itchen and the Hamble, engine and electronics specialists, sailmakers, chandlers and marine engineering firms at Hythe, Woolston and around Ocean Village. The National Oceanography Centre sits on the waterfront at Empress Dock.

Their urgent consignments are often awkward: an engine component that must reach a boat before a delivery voyage, a long spar, a rolled sail, or a set of electronics for a refit with a launch date. Tell us the length and the weight, and how the yard handles deliveries. For delicate instruments, our fragile and high-value courier service covers packing and handling.

The university, the hospital and the science park

The University of Southampton, with its main campus at Highfield and engineering and maritime research at Boldrewood, regularly moves research equipment and samples. University Hospital Southampton, at Southampton General in Shirley, works with labs and hospitals across the South. Southampton Science Park at Chilworth, just off the M3 and M27, adds technology and life-science companies.

Medical and research consignments travel with a named recipient and, where needed, in a chilled vehicle. Samples must be packaged by the sender to the correct standard before collection; our medical courier page sets out what we need.

Roads, bridges and timings

The M3 heads north-east from Southampton to Winchester, the M25 and London; the M27 runs east to Portsmouth and west to the New Forest; and the M271 links the M27 with the docks and the western side of the city. The A33 and A3024 lead into the centre, and the Itchen Bridge, a toll crossing, links the city centre with Woolston. The M27 around junctions 3 to 5 and the M3 near Winchester are the usual slow points, and dock traffic builds on cruise turnaround days.

Typical journeys from Southampton

FAQ

Common questions

Can you get spares to a cruise ship before it sails from Southampton today?

We can deliver to the landside point the ship's agent or the terminal specifies, which is usually a security gate, a stores reception area or the agent's office. Ships turn around in a single day, so time is tight: give us the ship name, the terminal, the agent's contact and any delivery reference, and tell us the latest time the agent can accept the goods. Getting the goods aboard is handled by the agent and the terminal under their own security rules.

Do you deliver to marinas and boatyards on the Hamble and at Hythe?

Yes. Boatyards and marinas around the Solent are common destinations for engine parts, rigging, electronics and sails. Give us the yard name, the berth or workshop, and a contact who can meet the driver, because marina access roads and car parks are often controlled. Long items such as spars or rolled sails may need an LWB van; tell us the length when you book.

Can you take goods to the Isle of Wight?

The Isle of Wight is not part of our standard mainland service, because it involves a ferry crossing. Ask us about your consignment and we will tell you whether we can arrange it and what it involves. For anything on the mainland side of the Solent, including Portsmouth, Lymington and the New Forest, normal same-day booking applies.

How quickly can a van get from Southampton to Heathrow?

Heathrow is about 60 miles away via the M3 and M25, which normally takes around an hour and a quarter outside peak periods. The M3 near the M25 and the M25 itself are the usual delays. We deliver to landside addresses such as cargo agents and freight forwarders; give us the agent's cut-off and booking reference so we can plan to arrive in good time.

We need chilled goods collected from a Southampton cold store. Can you help?

Yes. Book a refrigerated van and tell us the temperature range, the number of pallets or cases and the cold store's booking arrangements. We agree the range at booking; many chilled food producers specify 0–5 °C, and most chilled food must be kept at 8 °C or below. Port-side cold stores usually work to booked collection slots, so share the slot and reference with us.
