Nottingham's courier traffic
Nottingham generates a distinctive mix of courier work. Its two big hospitals and two universities, together with a long-established pharmaceutical and life sciences community, produce a steady stream of small, time-sensitive consignments. The M1 a few miles west links the city to business parks along its junctions, and East Midlands Airport, a short run south-west, is one of the main air cargo gateways in the country.
Because so much of this work is small and fragile, the van matters less than the handling. We send the nearest vehicle that suits the consignment, from wherever it is when you book, and confirm an estimated collection time on the call. A sample box is never mixed with other customers' goods or left in a depot overnight.
Hospitals: QMC and City Hospital
Nottingham University Hospitals runs the Queen's Medical Centre, beside the University of Nottingham's University Park campus, and Nottingham City Hospital on Hucknall Road in the north of the city. Both are big, busy sites where the delivery point matters as much as the address.
Typical jobs include:
- samples from a private clinic in West Bridgford going to a hospital laboratory
- a replacement component for an imaging system, collected from a supplier in Derby
- research materials from a University of Nottingham laboratory going to a partner lab in Leeds
- a pallet of consumables from a distributor near junction 26 of the M1
Diagnostic samples must be packaged correctly by the sender before collection. Our medical and pharmaceutical courier page explains what you need to prepare.
Pharma and life sciences
Nottingham has a long history in pharmaceutical research and manufacture. BioCity Nottingham, on Pennyfoot Street on the east side of the city centre, is one of the UK's largest bioscience incubation centres, home to around 70 life sciences companies. Further out, Nottingham Science Park near the university and the research and manufacturing sites around Beeston add to the cluster.
These businesses send reagents, samples, prototype devices and equipment around the country, often with handling rules attached. For chilled goods we send a refrigerated van and agree the temperature range with you at booking. For high-value instruments and fragile equipment, our fragile and high-value courier page covers packing and handover.

East Midlands Airport cargo (landside)
East Midlands Airport sits beside junctions 23A and 24 of the M1, about 15 miles south-west of Nottingham. It is the UK's busiest express air cargo hub, with a large concentration of express operators, forwarders and handling agents around the site.
We work landside only, collecting cleared imports from forwarders' sheds and delivering exports before a cut-off. A typical example is an import of spare parts arriving overnight and needed at a factory in Sheffield by mid-morning. For time-critical runs like this, an urgent courier booking is the right fit.
M1 junctions and city roads
Nottingham lies to the east of the M1, connected by several junctions:
- Junction 24 via the A453 for the south of the city and the airport
- Junction 25 via the A52 for the west of the city, Beeston and the QMC
- Junction 26 via the A610 for the north-west, Bulwell and Kimberley
- Junction 27 for Hucknall and the north
The A52 Clifton Bridge over the Trent and the ring road junctions slow down at peak times, and the city centre has tram routes and bus lanes that limit where vans can stop. We plan routes around these and pick the junction that best suits your address.
No clean-air charge, and the parking levy explained
There is no charging Clean Air Zone in Nottingham. The city's Workplace Parking Levy is sometimes confused with one, but it is a charge on employers that provide staff parking, not on vehicles entering the city. It does not affect courier deliveries or our prices.

FAQ
Common questions
Does the Workplace Parking Levy add anything to a courier delivery in Nottingham?
No. Nottingham's Workplace Parking Levy is charged to employers that provide 11 or more parking places for staff. It is not a charge on vehicles entering the city, so a van collecting from or delivering to your premises does not pay it, and it does not appear in our quotes. Nottingham does not have a charging Clean Air Zone either.
Can you collect cleared cargo from East Midlands Airport and deliver it the same day?
Yes, from the landside premises. East Midlands Airport, beside junctions 23A and 24 of the M1, is the UK's busiest express air cargo hub, and forwarders and handling agents operate from sheds around it. Once your agent confirms release, give us the air waybill number, the shed and the release reference. We collect at the landside door and drive straight to you. We do not work airside.
Our lab is at BioCity. Can you take temperature-sensitive reagents to a customer in Cambridge?
Yes. Tell us the temperature range the consignment needs and how it is packed, for example in validated shippers or loose on a pallet. We agree the range with you at booking; typical chilled ranges are 2–8 °C. Where the goods need active temperature control, we send a refrigerated van and follow the handling and documentation requirements you set out, including temperature records where the vehicle supports them.
Which hospital entrance should we give you for the QMC?
The Queen's Medical Centre is a very large site, and the main entrance is rarely the right delivery point. Give us the department or laboratory name, the building and floor if you know it, and the contact who will sign. Pathology and pharmacy deliveries often have their own receiving areas. The same applies at City Hospital on Hucknall Road. The more precise the address, the quicker the handover.
