North bank, south bank, and the bridges in between

On Tyneside, the river decides most routes. The offices, the universities, the Royal Victoria Infirmary and much of the professional services work sit on the Newcastle side. The Team Valley Trading Estate, Gateshead's long manufacturing and trade estate beside the A1, sits on the south side, along with the Metrocentre. Further east, North Tyneside's business parks, the engineering yards at Wallsend and the Port of Tyne line both banks towards the coast.

A same-day job here is often a short hop that happens to cross the river at the worst time of day, or a long run that leaves Tyneside on the A1 or A19 and keeps going. We handle both the same way: one dedicated van, collected from your door and driven direct to the delivery address, with no depot stop in between.

When you book, we allocate the nearest suitable vehicle and confirm an estimated collection time based on where it is, allowing for any river crossing on the way to you.

What moves from Newcastle and Gateshead

Mostly parts, tooling, test equipment and documents for offshore wind, subsea and energy work, trade orders and pallets from Team Valley, and medical and research consignments for the city's hospitals and universities. Many loads are small but heavy or valuable, so weights and lifting arrangements matter at booking.

Engineering, offshore and subsea

The river's heavy-engineering tradition now supports offshore wind, subsea and energy work along the Tyne and up the coast at Blyth. The consignments that come out of it are usually parts, tooling, test equipment and documentation: small enough for a van, but often heavy, awkward or very valuable. Tell us the weight and the lifting arrangements at both ends. A Luton van with a tail lift handles crated items that would be unsafe to lift by hand, within its rated limit of around 500 kg on the lift. Our manufacturing and engineering courier page explains how we handle breakdown parts and line-stopper calls.

Team Valley and the trade counters

Team Valley's mix of manufacturers, wholesalers and trade suppliers produces a lot of "we need it on site this afternoon" work: a replacement motor for a customer in Carlisle, a pallet of fixings for a contractor in Teesside, a set of samples for a client in Leeds. These are ideal urgent courier jobs, and a short drive from the A1 means the van is usually on the road quickly once loaded.

Hospitals and universities

Newcastle Hospitals runs the Royal Victoria Infirmary near the city centre and the Freeman Hospital in High Heaton, and both work with labs and hospitals elsewhere in the North East and beyond. Newcastle University, Northumbria University and the Newcastle Helix science quarter add research equipment and samples to the mix. We carry medical consignments that the sender has packaged to the required standard, and refrigerated vans are available for goods that must stay chilled.

Getting around Tyneside

The A1 Western Bypass carries traffic around the west of Newcastle and Gateshead and is the busiest road in the area at peak times. The A19 runs north to south through North Tyneside and under the river through the Tyne Tunnel, which is a free-flow toll crossing. The A69 heads west to Hexham and Carlisle, and the A1 continues north through Northumberland towards Edinburgh.

The city centre adds two considerations: the Clean Air Zone, which charges non-compliant vans and other commercial vehicles (not private cars), and limited loading space around Grey Street, the Quayside and the main shopping streets. If a city-centre address has a loading bay, a rear entrance or a building manager, tell us when you book.

Before a long run north or south

Long journeys from Tyneside are common: Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester and London are all regular destinations. A single driver can cover very long one-way runs within the GB drivers' hours rules, but a same-day return on the longest routes may need a second driver or an overnight plan. We will say so at booking rather than on the day.

FAQ

Common questions

Does the Newcastle Clean Air Zone affect my delivery?

The Newcastle and Gateshead Clean Air Zone covers most of Newcastle city centre and the main Tyne bridges into it. Older vans, lorries, taxis, buses and coaches that do not meet the emissions standards are charged; private cars are not. We take the zone into account when choosing the vehicle for a city-centre job, and if a charge applies to your booking it is included in your quote rather than added afterwards.

Can you deliver spares to a vessel or a yard on the river?

We deliver to landside addresses: the yard gate, goods-in, the agent's office or the security point where the port or site operator tells us to go. Getting onto a quay or alongside a vessel depends on the site's security rules and on the arrangements you or your agent make with them. Give us the contact and any pass reference, and the driver will follow the site's instructions on arrival.

Can a van leave Newcastle and reach Aberdeen the same day?

Yes, though it is a long day. Aberdeen is roughly 250 miles north via Edinburgh, which is around five to five and a half hours of driving before traffic. One driver can do a single run comfortably within the GB drivers' hours limits; a return journey the same day may need a second driver or an overnight plan. We tell you which applies when you book.

Is it quicker to use the A19 or the A1 out of Tyneside?

It depends on which side of the river you start. From North Tyneside, Cobalt or the coast, the A19 and the Tyne Tunnel are often the quicker way south towards Teesside. From Gateshead or the west of the city, the A1 Western Bypass is the natural choice, although it is the busiest stretch in the area at peak times. The driver chooses on the day using live traffic, and any tunnel toll is included in your quote.

We need documents in a London office by 9.00 am tomorrow. Can you do that from Newcastle?

Yes. London is around 280 miles by road, so the usual plan is an evening or overnight collection with a direct run down the A1(M) and M1, arriving before the office opens. Tell us who will be there to sign and whether the building has a night porter. Our overnight courier service explains how early-morning deliveries work.
