Collection booked, van on its way

A courier collection with us means a van and driver are sent to the address you give, they collect the goods, and they drive directly to the delivery address. There is no drop-off at a parcel shop, no waiting for the next scheduled round, and no depot overnight. The same vehicle that collects your goods is the one that delivers them.

You can book a collection from almost anywhere in mainland UK: a house, a flat, an office reception, a factory goods-out, a shop's back door or a builders' merchant's trade counter. You do not need to be at the collection address yourself, and you do not need an account to book a one-off job.

This page is about booking a collection and getting it right. For a stage-by-stage account of what happens once a job is confirmed, see how our service works.

Where we collect from

We collect from homes, businesses, shops and trade counters anywhere in mainland UK (England, Scotland and Wales), and deliver the same day in a dedicated van. The address type changes what the driver needs to know, such as parking, a goods-in entrance or an order reference, so each is covered below.

From home

Collections from a home address are routine. Common examples include a laptop going back to an employer, a parcel that missed a carrier's last collection, a piece of furniture sold online, or a set of signed papers that must reach a solicitor before the end of the day. Tell us about parking on your street and whether the goods are on the ground floor, and give us a mobile number the driver can call.

From a business

Offices, workshops, warehouses and studios book collections for anything from a single envelope to a full Luton load. If the building has a goods-in or goods-out entrance, a loading bay or a security desk, say so, because a driver who knows where to go is a driver who collects quickly.

From a shop or trade counter

Builders' merchants, electrical wholesalers, motor factors and plumbing suppliers often have the part you need but no delivery slot until tomorrow. We collect from the counter and bring it to your site or workshop the same day. Send us the order reference and the branch details when you book.

Collecting on someone else's behalf

Plenty of collections are booked by someone who is not at the collection address. That is no problem, as long as everyone knows what is happening.

  • Buying from a private seller. You have bought a sideboard, a bike or a piece of equipment online, and the seller is 120 miles away. Agree the collection with the seller, settle payment between you beforehand, and give us their name and number.
  • Collecting from a supplier. A business customer needs stock or spares from a manufacturer or wholesaler. The supplier prepares the goods; we collect them and deliver to you or straight to your end customer.
  • Moving goods between your own sites. A branch in Leicester needs a box of samples from head office in Northampton. Anyone at either site can be the named contact.

In each case you remain the customer. You receive the confirmation, the updates and the proof of delivery, even though you never meet the driver.

Tell the collection contact

The single most useful thing you can do is tell the person at the collection address that a driver is coming, roughly when, and what they are collecting. A seller who has gone out, or a warehouse that has not pulled the order, is the most common reason a collection is delayed.

What to have ready

When you arrange a courier collection, have the following to hand. It takes a couple of minutes and gives us everything needed to choose the right van and agree a fixed price.

Information for booking

  • Full collection and delivery addresses, with postcodes
  • A name and mobile number for the contact at each address
  • What the goods are, how many pieces, and the size and weight of the largest one
  • When the goods will be ready, and when they need to arrive
  • Any order number, lot number or collection reference
  • Access notes: stairs, lifts, parking, gate codes, opening hours

The goods themselves should be packed, labelled with the delivery address and a contact number, and waiting near the door. Our guide to preparing goods for urgent collection has practical tips, and the quote checklist goes into more detail on measurements and weights.

How to book

You can book a collection online with our quote form, by phone for anything genuinely urgent, or against a business account if your company has one. Each route gives you a fixed price and an estimated collection time before the van is dispatched, based on where the nearest suitable vehicle is.

Online

Send the quote form with the collection and delivery details. We reply with a fixed price, the vehicle we plan to send and an estimated collection time based on where the nearest suitable vehicle is. Accept it and the van is dispatched.

By phone

For anything genuinely urgent, or a collection that needs explaining, call 020 4525 2039. Speaking to the booking desk is the quickest way to arrange a collection when the goods are ready now.

On a business account

Approved businesses can book collections against a business account with invoicing, which suits teams who arrange collections regularly and want every job listed with its reference on one invoice. Credit checks apply.

Same day collection and delivery: what decides the timing

Three things decide when your goods arrive. The first is how soon the goods are ready: a collection booked at 10.00 am for goods that will not be packed until 2.00 pm runs from 2.00 pm. The second is where the nearest suitable vehicle is, which is why we give you an estimated collection time when you book rather than a standard promise. The third is the distance itself.

Most same-day collection and delivery jobs within England, Wales or the central belt of Scotland fit comfortably into one day. Very long routes, such as Cornwall to Aberdeen, are limited by drivers' hours rules and may need a second driver or an overnight plan. We tell you which at the quote stage, before anything is booked.

Evenings, nights and weekends

We work 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including bank holidays, so a courier collection does not have to fit office hours. A part needed for an overnight repair, stock that must be on a shop floor before opening, or a Sunday collection from a private seller can all be booked the same way as a weekday job.

Out-of-hours collections usually need a little more planning at the collection end. Make sure someone will be there to hand the goods over, that the site is open or a key holder is available, and that the driver knows how to get in. For deliveries timed for first thing in the morning, see our overnight courier service, and for regular Saturday and Sunday work our weekend courier page.

What proof you get

Every job is recorded at both ends. At collection, the driver notes who handed the goods over and when. At delivery, the recipient signs, and the proof of delivery records their name, the time and a signature, with a photograph where useful, such as goods left with a named receptionist or placed inside a site cabin.

We send the proof of delivery to you as soon as the job is complete. You also get live updates while the goods are on the road, so you can tell the recipient when to expect them. Goods in transit insurance applies to every collection; cover limits and exclusions are set out in our terms, and if you tell us the value when booking we will confirm cover, or arrange additional cover for high-value goods.

If the collection is time-critical, our urgent courier service explains how we handle short-notice jobs. For a small box or envelope going across the country today, see same-day parcel delivery.

FAQ

Common questions

Can I arrange a courier collection from an address I am not at?

Yes. Many collections are booked by someone who is nowhere near the goods: a buyer collecting from a seller, a business collecting from a supplier, or an office manager sending something from a branch. Give us the collection contact's name and mobile number and tell them a driver is coming. You stay the customer for the booking and receive the updates and proof of delivery.

Do I need to be at home all day for a collection?

No. When you book we confirm an estimated collection time, based on where the nearest suitable vehicle is, and the driver usually calls when close. Someone needs to be there to hand the goods over and give a name, so if you have to step out, leave a named neighbour or colleague with the goods and tell us who they are.

Can you collect from a trade counter or a supplier's warehouse?

Yes, and it is a routine booking. Give us the order or collection reference, the branch address and its opening hours, and confirm the goods are paid for and ready. Some trade counters ask for the account holder's name or a collection code, so pass that on when you book and the driver will quote it at the counter.

Is there a cut-off time for same-day collection and delivery?

We do not set a fixed daily cut-off, because we work 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Whether a collection can be delivered the same day depends on the distance, when the goods are ready, and drivers' hours on very long routes. Tell us when the goods must arrive and we will say at the quote stage whether that is achievable.

What proof do I get that the goods were collected?

The driver records the collection with the name of the person who handed the goods over and the time. At delivery, the recipient signs and the proof of delivery records their name, the time and a signature, with a photograph where useful. We send it to you as soon as the job is complete, so you have a record at both ends.

Can the driver bring packaging to the collection?

Drivers carry blankets and straps for securing goods in the van, but they do not supply boxes or packing materials for you to pack into. Goods should be packed and ready before the driver arrives. Unboxed items such as furniture or equipment can travel blanket-wrapped, so tell us at booking if something is not in a box.
