What an urgent courier actually does

A machine is down in Telford and the replacement gearbox is on a shelf in Milton Keynes. A bid team in Reading has realised the client wants a signed hard copy of the tender at its Leeds office by 4.00 pm. A parcel network driver came and went before your warehouse finished packing. Each of these is a job for an urgent courier.

We book one vehicle and one driver for your consignment, and the driver drives directly from collection to the delivery address. Nobody else's goods are on board and nothing goes through a depot. So the delivery time depends mainly on distance and traffic, and we can tell you at booking roughly when it will arrive.

The first 15 minutes after you call

Most of the time saved on an urgent job is saved before the van moves. Here is what happens once you call 020 4525 2039 or send a booking.

  1. We take the details

Collection and delivery postcodes, what the item is, its size and weight, when it's ready, and the latest time it can arrive. We also ask who will hand it over and who will sign for it.

  2. We match a vehicle

The item decides the van, not the other way round. A box of documents fits a small van; a 2.6 metre steel section needs a long-wheelbase van; a crated motor on a pallet may need a Luton with a tail lift. We pick the smallest vehicle that takes the load safely, because a bigger van costs more to run.

  3. We find the nearest suitable one

We look for an available vehicle of that size near your collection address and work out an estimated collection time from where it is.

  4. You get a fixed price and an ETA

We confirm the price, the estimated collection time and a realistic delivery time. If the deadline can't be met, we say so now, not at 3.30 pm.

  5. The driver is dispatched

You receive confirmation, then live updates as the job progresses, and a signed proof of delivery when it's handed over.

Vehicle choice matters more than people expect. A small van booked for something that turns out to be 1.9 metres long can cost an hour while a second vehicle is found. Our van size guide gives typical load dimensions, or just send us the measurements.

What to have ready before the driver arrives

Before the driver arrives, have the item packed, labelled and at the collection point, with the size and weight of the largest piece to hand. Make sure the named contacts at both ends know the driver is coming, and have the access notes and the value of the goods ready. The full list:

Have these ready

  • The item packed, labelled with the delivery address and contact, and at the collection point
  • Measurements and weight of the largest piece, including any pallet or crate
  • A named person at collection who knows the driver is coming
  • A named recipient at delivery, with a mobile number, and their closing time
  • Access notes: loading bay, height barrier, site induction, booking-in reference, parking
  • The value of the goods, so we can confirm insurance cover before collection

Goods in transit insurance is included as standard. Cover limits and exclusions are set out in our terms; tell us the value when booking and we will confirm cover, or arrange additional cover for high-value goods. For packing tips that suit a rushed dispatch, see our guide on preparing goods for an urgent collection.

Realistic timings by distance

Once the goods are on board, an urgent delivery takes about as long as the drive. The figures below are typical van drive times in normal traffic, as a planning guide only. Rush hour, roadworks and weather all add time, and we give you a specific estimate for your route when you book.

Example route Approximate road distance Typical drive time after collection
Across Greater Manchester 10–20 miles 30 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes
Birmingham to Bristol about 90 miles 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes
London to Birmingham about 120 miles 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours 30 minutes
London to Manchester about 200 miles 4 to 5 hours
London to Glasgow about 400 miles 7 to 8 hours plus breaks
London to Aberdeen about 540 miles beyond a comfortable single-driver day

Very long routes are governed by drivers' hours. Under the GB domestic rules, a van driver can drive for a maximum of 10 hours and be on duty for 11 hours in a day, and that day includes the drive to reach you. For a run like London to Aberdeen, or a late-afternoon booking from Kent to the Highlands, we may need a second driver or an overnight plan with an early-morning delivery. We will tell you which at booking, so there are no surprises. Our overnight courier service often suits these jobs well.

Emergencies we deal with most often

Production line stoppages. A failed bearing or a missing batch of fixings can stop a whole shift, and an hour of downtime usually costs far more than a van. We collect from the supplier or a sister site and deliver straight to the maintenance team. More on this in our manufacturing and engineering courier page.

Missed parcel-network cut-offs. The network collected at 3.00 pm, the order was packed at 3.20 pm, and the customer was promised it tomorrow morning. We can deliver it tonight or first thing, depending on distance.

Forgotten or late tender documents. Some clients still want signed paper copies, sealed bids or samples by a fixed time, and late submissions are often rejected. We hand the envelope to the named recipient or the reception the tender specifies, and the signed proof of delivery records the time. Our document courier service covers this in more detail.

Parts and kit for sites. Workshop parts, a replacement laptop for a contractor, a generator part for an event. We don't carry dangerous goods under ADR, so ask first about anything flammable, pressurised or chemical.

Urgent courier or "express" parcel delivery?

An urgent courier is one dedicated van going directly from collection to delivery, usually the same day, while an "express" parcel service moves through hubs and sorting, typically for delivery the next working day. The urgent courier costs more per job but handles your goods far less. Check which one you are buying:

Item Urgent dedicated courier Express parcel network
How it travels One van, direct from collection to delivery Collection round, hub, sorting, delivery round
Typical speed Same day, often within hours of collection Next working day by a set time, in most cases
Handling Loaded once, unloaded once Several scans, conveyors and transfers
Size and weight Anything that fits the van we send Weight and size bands, extra charges above them
Cost Higher, priced per job Lower, priced per parcel

If it can wait until tomorrow and it's a normal boxed parcel, an express network product will be cheaper, and we'd rather you knew that. When it can't wait, or the network won't take it, a dedicated courier is the answer. For deliveries that need to land first thing tomorrow rather than today, look at our next day courier service.

When an urgent job doesn't go to plan

Most hold-ups happen at the collection or delivery address, not on the road: goods not ready, a booking-in reference nobody mentioned, a recipient who left early. Because we hear from the driver throughout, we can raise a problem with you while there is still time to fix it. Our guide to common causes of courier delays covers the usual culprits.

FAQ

Common questions

How quickly can you get a van to me?

It depends on where the nearest suitable vehicle is when you call, so we won't quote a blanket figure. When you book, we check what's available near your collection address and give you an estimated collection time before you confirm. If that doesn't work for your deadline, we tell you straight away so you can decide what to do.

Is there a latest time I can book an urgent same day delivery?

There's no fixed cut-off, because we run 24 hours a day. The real limit is the recipient. If a Leeds office closes at 5.30 pm and your goods are in Bristol at 2.00 pm, the drive time alone makes that tight. Tell us when the delivery address stops accepting deliveries and we'll tell you honestly whether it's achievable, or whether an early-morning delivery tomorrow is the better plan.

Can you do an emergency delivery at night or on a bank holiday?

Yes. We take bookings and run vehicles around the clock, including weekends and bank holidays. The practical question is usually whether someone will be there to receive and sign, so give us a mobile number for the person meeting the driver. See our weekend courier service for planned Saturday and Sunday work.

Is an urgent courier the same as an express parcel service?

No. Express parcel products from the big networks are faster versions of a network service: your parcel is still collected on a round, taken to a hub, sorted and delivered on another round, usually the next working day by a set time. An urgent courier sends one vehicle for your goods alone and drives them directly to the delivery address, the same day.

What should I do if the parcel network has already missed my delivery?

If the goods are still with you, book us from your premises. If they're already inside a network hub, getting them released can take longer than sending a replacement, so many customers dispatch a second unit with us and sort out the original later. Tell us the deadline and we'll say whether same day or first thing tomorrow is realistic.
