Birmingham work is mostly about time windows

Very few Birmingham jobs are a simple A to B. The city sits where the M5, M6, M42 and M40 meet, and a large share of its courier work is shaped by somebody else's deadline: a production line in Solihull, a show opening at the NEC, an assay appointment in the Jewellery Quarter or a hospital department in Edgbaston.

So the first thing we ask is the deadline, not just the postcode. Then we find the nearest suitable van, wherever it happens to be on the network at that moment, and send it to you. The estimated collection time we give you at booking comes from that vehicle's actual position. Once your goods are loaded, nothing else joins them.

Inside the Middleway: the Clean Air Zone

Birmingham's Clean Air Zone covers everything inside the A4540 Middleway ring road (the Middleway itself is not charged). That includes the Colmore business district, the Jewellery Quarter, Digbeth, Eastside and the area around New Street and Moor Street stations. Vans that meet the emission standards (generally Euro 6 diesel or Euro 4 petrol) are not charged.

What this means for you is simple: any charge that applies to the vehicle on your job is included in the quote. A delivery to a Colmore Row law firm costs what we said it would.

Line-side parts for West Midlands manufacturing

The region's vehicle plants and the supplier base around them work to tight schedules. A missing bracket, sensor or tooling component can stop a line, and the parts often come from a supplier hundreds of miles away.

Typical work in this sector includes:

  • a pallet of pressings from a Telford supplier to a plant in Solihull, booked for a set slot at goods-in
  • a replacement gearbox casting taken from a Black Country foundry to a machine shop in Coventry
  • prototype components moved between engineering centres around Warwick and Gaydon
  • a failed motor collected from a Tyseley factory for overnight repair in Wolverhampton and returned the next morning

For these jobs, the delivery point and the booking reference matter as much as the address. Plant gatehouses can hold a driver for a long time without the right paperwork. Our automotive courier page explains how we plan line-side deliveries, and our manufacturing and engineering work covers heavier and awkward loads.

NEC show weeks

The NEC sits beside the M42 at junction 6, next to Birmingham Airport and Birmingham Business Park. During large shows, the roads around the site and the airport junction get busy at the start and end of each day, and organisers control access to the halls.

Exhibitors usually need us at three points: delivering stand materials during build-up, rescuing a forgotten box of literature on opening morning, and collecting everything at break-down. A Luton van with a tail lift suits most shell-scheme and modular stands; check the van size guide if you are unsure what will fit. For full show logistics, see our events and exhibitions page.

Jewellery Quarter consignments

The Jewellery Quarter in Hockley is still home to hundreds of small workshops, dealers and the Birmingham Assay Office. Consignments here are often small but valuable: finished pieces going to a London retailer, stock for assaying, or a dealer's parcel to a buyer in Edinburgh.

They suit a direct job well. One driver, one locked van, no depot handling and a signed proof of delivery at the end. Tell us the declared value when you book so we can confirm cover. Our fragile and high-value courier service covers packaging and handover in more detail.

Hospitals and universities

Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and the University of Birmingham share the Edgbaston campus. Birmingham Children's Hospital is on Steelhouse Lane, inside the Clean Air Zone. Deliveries to these sites usually go to a named department or goods-in point, and sample or medicine consignments must be packaged by the sender before collection. See our medical and pharmaceutical courier page for what that involves.

Where Birmingham traffic catches you

Mostly at Spaghetti Junction (M6 junction 6) and the viaduct to junction 7, the M5/M6 interchange at Ray Hall, the M42 around the NEC and the airport during big shows, and the A38 tunnels and Aston Expressway into the city centre. Peak times are the worst.

  • M6 junction 6 (Gravelly Hill, "Spaghetti Junction") and the raised viaduct section through to junction 7 slow down at peak times.
  • M5/M6 interchange (M6 junction 8, Ray Hall) backs up when either motorway is busy.
  • The M42 around the NEC and the airport during big shows.
  • The A38 tunnels and the Aston Expressway for city-centre access.

For runs heading north, the M6 Toll can bypass the busiest stretch of the M6 between junctions 4 and 11. We decide whether to use it job by job.

FAQ

Common questions

My delivery is inside the Middleway. Do I pay the Clean Air Zone charge separately?

No. Birmingham's Clean Air Zone covers the roads inside the A4540 Middleway ring road, which includes the Jewellery Quarter, Digbeth, the Colmore Row business district and much of the city centre. If a charge applies to the vehicle doing your job, it is included in the fixed price we agree before collection. You will not receive a separate bill for it afterwards.

A supplier has let us down and our line stops at 2.00 pm. What do you need from me?

The collection address and the name of the person releasing the parts, the exact delivery point (gatehouse, goods-in bay or line-side), the part's weight and dimensions, and any booking-in rules at the plant. Many manufacturing sites in Solihull, the Black Country and Coventry need a delivery reference at the gate. Give us that with the booking, and the driver will not be held at the barrier while someone hunts for a purchase order number.

Can you deliver to a stand at the NEC during build-up?

Yes. Exhibitors and contractors often need graphics, literature or a forgotten part brought in during build-up or on the morning a show opens. Tell us the hall, stand number and the organiser's delivery rules, as most shows control vehicle access to the halls by time slot and some require a vehicle pass. We also collect stands at break-down and take them back to your unit or to the next venue.

How do you handle precious metal and jewellery consignments from the Jewellery Quarter?

As a direct, door-to-door job. The goods stay in one locked van with one driver from your workshop to the recipient, with no depot stops. Tell us the value when booking: goods in transit cover is standard, but cover limits and exclusions are set out in our terms, and for high-value consignments we will confirm cover or arrange additional cover before collection. We also send a signed proof of delivery with the recipient's name and time.

Is the M6 Toll worth using for a Birmingham delivery heading north?

Sometimes. When the M6 between junctions 4 and 11 is congested, the toll road can save significant time on runs towards Stoke, Manchester or Liverpool. When the M6 is clear, it adds cost without much gain. We decide route by route, and any toll used is part of the fixed price you agreed, not an extra.
