Aberystwyth courier service for mid Wales
Aberystwyth is a long way from any motorway, so a direct van matters more here than almost anywhere. One driver collects your consignment and takes it straight to the delivery address, with a realistic arrival time agreed before setting off.
- Realistic mid Wales journey times
- Research, archive and medical items
- Ceredigion and beyond covered

Remote by road, busy by trade
Aberystwyth is the largest town on Cardigan Bay and the commercial centre for a wide stretch of mid Wales. It is also two hours or more from the nearest motorway in almost any direction. That combination means many consignments that would go by parcel network elsewhere are sent here by dedicated van, because a missed connection at a hub can cost a whole day.
The way we work is the same as everywhere else: one van and driver for your consignment, collected and delivered directly. What changes is the planning. We give you an honest journey time based on the actual roads, and we track the job so you can see where the van is.
The university, the library and the research campus
Aberystwyth University is one of the town's biggest employers, with its main campus at Penglais on the hill above the town and research facilities at Gogerddan, home to the Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences. Research groups send samples, instruments and equipment to collaborators and service engineers across the UK, and they often need them to arrive on a particular day.
The National Library of Wales, also on Penglais Hill, holds manuscripts, books, maps and archives of national importance. Loans, returns and conservation work involve items where condition is everything. For those, our fragile and high-value courier service covers what we need from you on packing, value and handling.
Hospital, offices and trade
Bronglais Hospital, near the town centre, serves a very large rural area of Ceredigion and Powys. Specialist work is often referred to larger hospitals in Carmarthen, Swansea or England, and samples, medicines and equipment travel the same long roads; they must be packaged correctly by the sender before collection.
The Welsh Government has an office at Rhodfa Padarn in Llanbadarn Fawr, and Ceredigion County Council has offices in the town. On the commercial side, Glanyrafon Industrial Estate, beside the A44 on the eastern edge of town, houses builders' merchants, engineering firms and distributors that keep the wider area supplied.
Roads, and what they mean for timings
Three main roads serve Aberystwyth, and none of them is fast.
- The A487 runs north along the coast to Machynlleth and on to Dolgellau and Porthmadog, and south to Aberaeron and Cardigan. The new Dyfi Bridge at Machynlleth, open to traffic since early 2024, has reduced the flooding closures that used to cut the route.
- The A44 climbs east through Ponterwyd to Llangurig, where it meets the A470 for Rhayader and Llandrindod Wells, or continues towards Llanidloes and Newtown.
- The A470 is the north to south road through mid Wales. It is the way to Cardiff, but it is slow, winding and busy with tourist traffic in summer.
Beyond these, the A489 and A458 link Machynlleth and Newtown with Welshpool and Shrewsbury, which is where the first dual carriageway appears. Inside Aberystwyth, most residential streets have the Welsh 20 mph default limit, and narrow roads in the town centre and near the seafront slow the final approach. We plan with all of that in mind, and confirm an estimated collection time at booking according to where the nearest suitable vehicle is.

FAQ
Common questions
Why does Aberystwyth to Birmingham take so long when it looks close on the map?
Because there is no fast road for most of it. Birmingham is around 120 road miles away, but the first 60 or so are on the A44 or the A487 and A489, single carriageway through hills and small towns, with tractors, timber lorries and summer caravans. Average speeds are far below motorway pace until Shrewsbury or Welshpool. We quote a journey time that reflects that, not the straight-line distance.
Can you move archive material or rare items to or from the National Library of Wales?
We can carry them, packed and prepared by the owner or the institution to its own conservation standards, in a van carrying nothing else. Tell us about handling, orientation and climate needs, and agree the receiving arrangements at both ends. Give us the value so we can confirm cover; cover limits and exclusions are set out in our terms, and we can arrange additional cover for high-value items.
Can research samples from the Gogerddan campus travel chilled to a lab in England?
Yes, in a refrigerated van, with the temperature range agreed at booking. Plant, soil and food samples travel well chilled; diagnostic specimens classed as UN3373 need triple packaging by the sender. A laboratory in the Midlands or the South West is a realistic same-day run if the samples are ready in the morning. Our refrigerated courier page explains how chilled jobs work.
Can you bring a student's cases and boxes to Aberystwyth at the start of term?
Yes. Suitcases, boxes and small items such as a desk chair or a computer travel well in a small or medium van, collected from home and delivered to the hall or the student's address. We do not offer full house removals or furniture assembly. See our luggage courier service, and book well ahead of the busiest arrival weekend in September.
Do you cover Cardigan, Lampeter, Aberaeron and the rest of Ceredigion?
Yes. The whole of Ceredigion is covered, from Borth and Tregaron to Cardigan and New Quay, together with neighbouring Powys, Gwynedd and Carmarthenshire. Expect rural journeys to take longer than the mileage suggests. A what3words location or clear directions help the driver find farm and smallholding addresses without a delay at the end.
