Near the western end of the M4

From Swansea, the M4 goes in one direction that matters: east. The motorway sweeps around the north of the city with junctions 42 to 47 and finishes a few miles further west at Pont Abraham, where the A48 takes over for Carmarthen. Almost every long Swansea run starts on it.

That makes the M4 both the best and the only fast route out. Cardiff is about 40 miles away, Bristol about 85, London about 190. When the M4 is moving, those are straightforward same-day runs. When it is not, there is rarely a quick alternative, which is why we track every long run closely and keep you informed.

The service model does not change with distance. You get one dedicated van and driver, allocated from wherever the nearest suitable vehicle is, with an estimated collection time confirmed when you book and a signed proof of delivery at the end.

Heavy industry around the bay

Swansea Bay has always been industrial, and it still is. Tata Steel's works at Port Talbot sits just to the east, its Trostre works is in Llanelli to the west, and Baglan Energy Park lies beside the M4 near Port Talbot. Around them sits a supply chain of fabricators, engineering contractors, hydraulic and electrical specialists, and maintenance firms.

What these businesses send in a hurry is usually a part that has stopped something: a motor, a pump seal kit, a control board, a set of bearings, a casting for a repair. They need a van that goes directly to the site and a driver who knows to report to the gatehouse with the right reference. Our manufacturing and engineering courier page explains how we handle breakdown and line-side deliveries, and our urgent courier service is the starting point when the clock is already running.

Business parks on the M4

The main business and industrial areas sit close to the motorway:

  • Swansea Enterprise Park at Llansamlet, near junctions 44 and 45, with trade counters, distributors, manufacturers and offices
  • Swansea West Industrial Park at Fforestfach, reached from junction 47, with industrial and warehouse units
  • Swansea Vale, next to Llansamlet, with offices and light industry

These sites send everything from a single carton to a few pallets. For pallets, our pallet delivery page sets out how many fit in each van.

Hospitals and universities

Morriston Hospital, close to M4 junction 46, and Singleton Hospital on the west side of the city are the main hospitals. Swansea University has two campuses: Singleton Park beside the hospital, and the Bay Campus on Fabian Way. The University of Wales Trinity Saint David also has a campus in the city.

Typical consignments are research equipment, small instruments, clinical supplies and samples. Packaging is the sender's responsibility; our medical and pharmaceutical courier page explains what we need before collection.

Getting the M4 timing right

For deadlines in Cardiff or Bristol, allow for the Brynglas Tunnels at Newport, between junctions 25 and 26, where traffic regularly slows. The Severn crossings have been toll-free since December 2018, so there is no charge to add on the way into England.

West into Pembrokeshire

Beyond Carmarthen, the A48, A477 and A40 lead into Pembrokeshire, with the ports at Pembroke Dock, Milford Haven and Fishguard. These are slower roads, often single carriageway, and we plan timings accordingly. Consignments that need to go on to Ireland involve customs formalities, and our European courier page explains the documents required.

FAQ

Common questions

Can a consignment collected in Swansea reach central London the same day?

Yes. Central London is about 190 miles east along the M4, comfortably within one driver's daily limits, so a morning or early-afternoon collection normally delivers the same day. The variable is traffic, particularly through the Brynglas Tunnels at Newport and on the approach to London. Give us the latest acceptable delivery time when you book, and we tell you straight away if the timing looks tight.

Do you deliver to the steelworks and industrial sites at Port Talbot?

Yes. Port Talbot is about 10 miles east of Swansea on the M4. Large industrial sites have their own gatehouse and stores procedures, so we need the entrance to use, the purchase order or reference, and the name of the person accepting the goods. Any site safety induction or PPE requirement for drivers should be confirmed with the site before collection, and we plan the timing around it.

We need lab equipment moved from Singleton Campus to the Bay Campus. Can you help?

Yes. The two Swansea University campuses are only a few miles apart, linked along the seafront and Fabian Way, so this is a short local run. Delicate instruments travel best in a van with nothing else on board, secured and protected. Tell us the building and room at each end, any loading restrictions, and whether someone needs to sign at both ends.

How far west do you go? Can you deliver to Pembroke Dock or Fishguard?

We cover the whole of mainland Wales, so Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire are all included, along with Gower. Pembroke Dock is around 55 miles from Swansea and Fishguard about 70. For goods continuing to Ireland on a ferry, talk to us about our European road services, as customs paperwork applies and must be ready before collection.

Can you take samples from Morriston Hospital to a laboratory in Cardiff?

Yes, if the sender has packaged them correctly. Diagnostic specimens classed as UN3373 Biological Substance Category B need triple packaging to P650 before collection. Morriston is close to M4 junction 46, and Cardiff is about 40 miles east, so the run is direct and short. Tell us the departments at both ends and whether a temperature range applies.
