Where the A470 meets the Heads of the Valleys

They meet at Merthyr Tydfil itself, which is what makes the town useful to a courier. The A470 runs south to Pontypridd and Cardiff, while the A465, now dual carriageway along its length, crosses the top of the town east to Abergavenny and the A40 and west to Hirwaun and Neath.

Merthyr was once the largest town in Wales and the centre of its iron industry. Today a van leaving it has a fast road in three directions, so it is a practical place to collect from for deliveries across South Wales and into England. As anywhere, the service is one dedicated van and one driver for your consignment, with an estimated collection time confirmed when you book, based on where the nearest suitable vehicle is at that point.

Manufacturing and the defence supply chain

Merthyr's industry is now mainly manufacturing and engineering, on estates such as Pentrebach in the south of the borough and the business parks along the A4060 and A470. The best known is General Dynamics' plant, where Ajax armoured vehicles for the British Army are assembled. Around such a site sits a supply chain of machine shops, cable and electrical specialists, fabricators and component distributors.

The courier work these businesses generate is mostly about time. A part arrives at the wrong specification, a jig needs to go back to its maker, or a supplier in the Midlands has the only replacement in stock. A single van collecting and delivering with no other stops is the fastest way to close that gap. Our manufacturing and engineering courier page explains how we handle goods-in rules and site references. We do not provide security or escorted transport.

Before booking a factory-to-factory run

  • Weight and dimensions of each item, and whether it is crated or palletised
  • Forklift or loading help at both ends, or a tail lift needed
  • Purchase order, delivery note or site reference
  • Name and phone number of the person receiving

Construction, retail and the hospital

Large regeneration and infrastructure projects, including the A465 itself, have kept contractors busy across the Heads of the Valleys. Sites call for the same urgent consignments as anywhere: a pump or generator part, fixings that ran short, drawings for an inspection, or a hired tool that has to be back by the end of the day. Our construction courier page covers site deliveries, including what to arrange where there is no forklift.

Retail parks around Cyfarthfa and the Trago Mills store near the A470 generate stock moves and store transfers. Prince Charles Hospital, on the northern side of the town, is the main hospital destination; medical samples must be packaged correctly by the sender before collection.

Valley roads, weather and the 20 mph default

The main roads are good, but the final mile is often slow. Merthyr's terraced streets climb steeply from the valley floor, many are narrow, and parked cars leave little room. Most residential streets in the borough have the Welsh 20 mph default limit introduced in 2023, although councils have since put some roads back to 30 mph.

Weather matters too. The A465 and the A470 north of Merthyr both cross high ground, and snow, ice or hill fog can slow traffic in winter. Southbound, the A470 can queue near Pontypridd and on the approach to Cardiff at peak times. For a consignment that has to move straight away, our urgent courier service sends the nearest suitable van.

FAQ

Common questions

Has the new Heads of the Valleys dual carriageway made runs to the Midlands quicker?

Yes, noticeably. The final section of the A465 upgrade, between Dowlais Top and Hirwaun, was completed in 2025, so the road is now dual carriageway along its length. Heading east, a van joins the A40 at Abergavenny for Monmouth, Ross-on-Wye and the M50 to the M5, roughly 95 miles to Birmingham. For many Midlands addresses that is now quicker than going down to the M4.

Can you carry components from a Merthyr supplier to a defence manufacturer elsewhere?

Yes, for ordinary commercial consignments such as machined parts, fixings, cables or tooling, delivered to the goods-in point and named contact the customer specifies. We do not carry classified or controlled material, or anything that needs a security escort or vetted drivers. If your contract has rules on carriers, check them before you book, and give us any site access instructions for the driver.

Do you collect in Aberdare, Treharris and the Rhymney valley?

Yes. Aberdare, Mountain Ash, Treharris, Bargoed, Rhymney, Tredegar and Ebbw Vale are all covered, along with the rest of mainland UK. The terraced streets in valley towns are narrow and often lined with parked cars, so tell us if there is a rear lane, a loading area or a better place for the van to stop.

Can you deliver to an address in the Brecon Beacons north of Merthyr?

Yes. Bannau Brycheiniog begins just north of the town, and the A470 climbs through it to Brecon, about 19 miles away. Farms, outdoor centres, holiday businesses and reservoirs up there can be some distance from the main road, and the high section of the A470 can be affected by snow and ice in winter. Give us clear directions and we will plan the route.
