The first stop after the bridge

Newport is the first city a driver reaches after crossing the Severn into Wales, and most South Wales traffic passes through it. That gives Newport businesses an advantage for same-day work into England: Bristol is barely half an hour away when the roads are clear, and London is an easy single-day run. It also means Newport sits on the stretch of M4 that most often goes wrong.

The service is simple. You book, we find the nearest suitable vehicle and tell you an estimated collection time, and one driver takes your consignment directly to the delivery address with nothing else on board. You receive live updates during the job and a signed proof of delivery at the end.

Semiconductors, steel and the port

Newport has become one of the centres of the UK's compound semiconductor industry. The Newport Wafer Fab, now owned by Vishay, and equipment makers such as SPTS Technologies sit alongside smaller suppliers on business parks around the city, with more of the cluster across the boundary in Cardiff. Their urgent consignments are often small and very valuable: wafer carriers, a replacement vacuum component, a tooling part returning to its maker for repair.

Goods like that need careful handling more than speed alone. They travel in a van carrying nothing else, secured so they cannot shift, and they go straight to a named recipient. Our fragile and high-value courier page explains what we need from you on value, packaging and insurance.

Heavier work comes from the steel site at Llanwern to the east, from fabricators and engineering firms on estates such as Queensway Meadows, and from the docks, where the Port of Newport handles steel, bulk cargo and project freight. Industrial sites and the docks run controlled gates, so references matter as much as the address.

Offices, events and hospitals

Newport is home to the Office for National Statistics and the Intellectual Property Office, both on Cardiff Road, and to a cluster of offices and contact centres at Celtic Springs and Imperial Park near junction 28. Documents, signed agreements and equipment move between these sites and Cardiff, Bristol and London every day.

ICC Wales, the convention centre at the Celtic Manor resort, generates its own work during build-up and break-down: stands, display boards, printed material and AV kit, usually against a tight slot. The Royal Gwent Hospital in the city and the Grange University Hospital at Llanfrechfa near Cwmbran are the main hospital destinations; samples must be packaged to the correct standard by the sender before we collect.

The M4, the tunnels and the crossings

The M4 runs through Newport from junction 23A in the east to junction 28 in the west. Between junctions 25 and 26 it squeezes through the two-lane Brynglas tunnels, which is where most Newport delays begin: at peak times, or after any incident, queues build quickly in both directions. Early collections and a little flexibility on time make a real difference to journeys east.

Across the estuary, the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge carries most traffic to Bristol and London, and the older M48 Severn Bridge via Chepstow is the alternative when the main route is blocked. Neither has charged a toll since 2018. For direct runs over the border, our dedicated courier service is the usual choice.

FAQ

Common questions

How should wafers or semiconductor tooling travel between Newport and a lab in Cardiff?

In the packaging the manufacturer specifies, sealed and labelled by your team before collection. Cardiff is only around 12 miles away, so the run is short, and the van carries nothing else. Tell us about orientation, stacking limits and any shock sensitivity so the driver secures the load correctly, and give us the declared value so we can confirm cover or arrange extra for high-value items.

Can you deliver exhibition material to ICC Wales at the Celtic Manor?

Yes. The venue is beside M4 junction 24 on the eastern edge of Newport. Event venues allocate delivery slots during build-up, so give us the event name, the stand number, the slot time and any booking reference the organiser has issued. A Luton van with a tail lift suits most stand kits. Our events and exhibitions courier page covers build and break-down timing.

Our goods are going to a ship's agent at Newport Docks. What do you need from us?

The full delivery address within the port, the agent's or stevedore's reference, the name of the person receiving and any access instruction the port has given you. Docks have controlled entrances, and drivers can be asked for identification and a booking number at the gate. We deliver to the landside point you specify; loading on to the vessel is arranged by the agent.

Can you collect from Chepstow, Monmouth and Abergavenny too?

Yes. All of Monmouthshire is covered, together with Torfaen, Caerphilly and Blaenau Gwent, and anywhere else in mainland UK. Chepstow is about 16 miles east of Newport on the M48 side of the estuary, and Abergavenny and Monmouth are reached via the A449 and A40. Each collection is a dedicated van sent from wherever the closest suitable vehicle happens to be.

Do the Welsh 20 mph limits slow down deliveries inside Newport?

A little, on the final mile. Wales made 20 mph the default limit on most restricted roads, typically residential and town streets, in September 2023, and councils have since returned some roads to 30 mph. Motorways and trunk roads such as the M4 and A449 are unaffected. We allow for local limits when we estimate journey times, so they rarely change a delivery deadline.
