Dumfries courier service across the border and the A75
A dedicated van for your Dumfries consignment, driven straight from collection to delivery. Carlisle is closer than Glasgow, so many jobs here are as much cross-border runs as Scottish ones, and we allocate whichever suitable vehicle is nearest.
- Carlisle about 34 miles away
- A75 to Stranraer and Cairnryan
- Farm and rural addresses covered

Closer to England than to Glasgow
Dumfries is about 34 miles from Carlisle and roughly 75 from Glasgow or Edinburgh. That simple fact shapes how a courier works here. A lot of the region's urgent freight comes from, or goes to, the north of England, and the vehicle best placed to collect in Dumfries may well be south of the border when you call.
Whichever van it is, it is booked for your consignment alone. The driver collects and goes directly to the delivery address, with no depot in between and no other customer's goods on board. We confirm an estimated collection time at booking, worked out from where the nearest suitable vehicle actually is.
A region of long roads
Dumfries and Galloway is large and thinly populated, and the road network reflects that. Four routes do most of the work:
- The A75 runs west from Gretna, past Dumfries, through Castle Douglas, Gatehouse of Fleet and Newton Stewart to Stranraer and Cairnryan. It carries heavy ferry freight and is mostly single carriageway, so overtaking is limited and journey times vary.
- The A74(M) and M74 run north from Gretna past Lockerbie and Moffat to Glasgow. They are reached from Dumfries by the A709 to Lockerbie or the A701 to Beattock.
- The A76 follows Nithsdale north through Thornhill and Sanquhar to Kilmarnock.
- The A701 climbs from Moffat over the hills to Edinburgh, a quieter alternative to the motorway for the east of Scotland.
These roads are not difficult, but they are slow in places, and a tractor, a convoy of timber lorries or a closure can add a long delay. We give realistic timings and keep you updated during the run.

What the region sends
Mostly farm, food and forestry consignments, including heavy parts for harvesting machinery, alongside clinical and research items from the Royal Infirmary and the Crichton campus. Workshops and trade counters on Catherinefield and the estates in Annan, Lockerbie and Castle Douglas add parts and stock, much of it coming up from England.
Farming, food and forestry
Agriculture is the backbone of the region, with dairy and livestock farms across Galloway and food producers that depend on them. Forestry is just as visible: commercial plantations, harvesting contractors and sawmills move timber and need parts for heavy machinery at short notice. Those parts are often bulky or heavy, and our large item courier page explains how we match the van to the load.
Health and education
Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary, which moved to its current site on the western side of the town in 2017, is the main hospital for the region. The Crichton campus, south of the town centre, brings together university and college teaching and research. Our medical and pharmaceutical courier page covers packaging, temperature and handover for clinical consignments.
Trade and engineering
Catherinefield Industrial Estate, at Heathhall on the north-east side of Dumfries, has workshops, trade counters and distributors, and smaller estates sit around the town and in Annan, Lockerbie and Castle Douglas. A breakdown on a production line here often means a part has to come from a supplier in England, and a dedicated courier driving directly from the supplier is usually the quickest way to get it.
The ferry port at Cairnryan
Cairnryan, on Loch Ryan north of Stranraer, is the ferry port for Belfast and Larne. As it is on the mainland, we deliver to the port area, or to a haulier or freight agent's address nearby, for your onward arrangements. We do not deliver within Northern Ireland. Because the A75 is the only practical route west, allow for it when you choose a collection time, especially if the goods have to meet a sailing.
Over the border
For runs into Cumbria and the north of England, see our Carlisle courier page. For the rest of Scotland, our Scotland courier page covers the main routes and the cities with Low Emission Zones.
FAQ
Common questions
A harvester has broken down in a forest near Newton Stewart. Can you get the part to the site?
Usually, to a meeting point the driver can reach by road. Forest tracks are rarely suitable for a courier van, so agree a handover point with your contractor, such as a forest entrance, a yard or a lay-by, and give us a what3words reference or grid reference and a mobile number. Heavy hydraulic parts may need two people or a tail lift, so tell us the weight.
Can samples from Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary go to a laboratory in Glasgow or Newcastle?
Yes. The infirmary is on the western edge of Dumfries beside the A75 bypass, and Glasgow is about 75 miles away, Newcastle about 95. Both are routine one-way runs. The sender packages specimens before collection, to P650 for UN3373, and we agree any temperature range at booking. Tell us the departments and named contacts at both ends.
Is a Dumfries collection quicker to arrange than it looks on the map?
Often, because we do not have to start from the Central Belt. We allocate the nearest suitable vehicle, and for Dumfries that can be one already near Carlisle or on the M74. We confirm the estimated collection time when you book. For the far west of Galloway, around Stranraer and the Machars, the distances are longer and we tell you so.
We are a farm near Castle Douglas. Can you collect a milking or feed system part and take it for repair?
Yes. Rural addresses across Galloway are covered. A farm postcode can cover a large area, so give us the farm name, directions or a what3words reference and say where the part will be waiting. If it is heavy or awkward, tell us so we send a van with the right load space, and say whether there is a forklift or loader at each end.
