A long way down a single road

Fort William is the main town of Lochaber and the end point of a lot of long journeys. Glasgow is about 105 miles south, Inverness about 66 miles north-east along the Great Glen, and the motorway network starts only after a long run down the A82. Any courier offering Fort William should be clear about that from the start, because the road, more than the distance, decides how long a job takes.

We do not pretend otherwise. Each booking gets a dedicated van and driver, and the goods go directly from collection to delivery. We allocate the nearest suitable vehicle, which for Lochaber may be some distance away, and confirm an estimated collection time when you book.

The A82 and the other ways in

The A82 is the main road in from the south. From Glasgow it follows Loch Lomond, crosses Rannoch Moor and drops through Glen Coe to Ballachulish and the shore of Loch Linnhe. The section beside Loch Lomond is narrow and winding, and the whole road is exposed to weather, accidents and roadworks with few alternatives. North of Fort William, the A82 continues along the Great Glen to Inverness.

The other routes are:

  • The A830, the Road to the Isles, west to Glenfinnan, Arisaig and the port at Mallaig.
  • The A828, south from Ballachulish along the coast to Oban.
  • The A86, east from Spean Bridge through Glen Spean to Laggan and the A9 at Kingussie.
  • The Corran Ferry, across Loch Linnhe to Ardgour, Strontian, Morvern and Ardnamurchan.

Weather and closures

Snow on Rannoch Moor, flooding beside Loch Lomond and accidents in Glen Coe can close the A82 or slow it heavily, and diversions are long. We check conditions before the van leaves and tell you straight away if the plan has to change. Our guide to common causes of courier delays explains how we plan around them.

Long runs from England

Most same-day courier work into Lochaber starts in the Central Belt or the north of England, and a single driver can do those runs comfortably. Further south, the drivers' hours rules become the deciding factor. Van drivers working under GB domestic rules can drive for up to 10 hours a day, within 11 hours on duty, and the final stretch from Glasgow cannot be driven at motorway speed.

That gives three realistic options for a consignment coming from the Midlands, London or the south of England:

  1. Early collection, one driver

From the north of England and parts of the Midlands, an early start can still mean a same-day delivery, if the roads are clear.

  2. A second driver

Two drivers share the hours so the van keeps going, and the consignment arrives the same day. It costs more, and we price it before you commit.

  3. Overnight, delivered early

The van travels the same day, the driver rests, and the goods arrive first thing next morning. Our overnight courier page explains how that works.

We tell you which applies once we have the addresses, rather than promising a time the road will not allow.

Who uses a courier in Lochaber

Mostly hotels and hospitality, outdoor sport and event organisers, Belford Hospital, distilleries, marine and fish farm businesses, and industry at Corpach and Annat. Typical jobs are a part for a hotel kitchen at the start of the season, kit for a mountain event, a boat component, or clinical items going to Inverness or Glasgow.

Corpach and Annat sit at the western end of the Caledonian Canal, and the distilleries and aquaculture businesses are spread along the coast. Public services are a large employer as well.

For a business-critical part from a supplier in the south, a dedicated courier driving directly to you often arrives well before a parcel network would reach a Highland postcode.

Ports, islands and the edges of the map

We collect from and deliver to anywhere on the mainland, including the ferry terminals at Mallaig and Oban. The islands they serve, such as Skye, Mull, Eigg and Barra, are not part of our standard service, and neither is Knoydart, which has no road link, so ask us first. For routes and timings to the north and east, see our Inverness courier page, and for the country as a whole, our Scotland courier page.

FAQ

Common questions

Can a part leave Birmingham this morning and reach Fort William tonight?

Possibly, but it is tight for one driver. Fort William is around 400 road miles from Birmingham, and the last 100 miles on the A82 are slow. Within the 10-hour daily driving limit for van drivers, a very early collection and a clear road are needed. If the timing is doubtful, we offer a second driver or an overnight plan with delivery first thing the next morning, and price both before you commit.

What happens if the A82 is closed through Glen Coe?

There is no short alternative. Depending on where the van is, the diversion may go via the A85 and Oban, or north-east via the A86 and the A9, which can add a great deal of time. We check road conditions before departure and during the run, call you as soon as a closure affects the job, and agree with you whether to divert, wait or reschedule.

Can you deliver to Mallaig for a boat to Knoydart or the Small Isles?

Yes, to the harbour, the ferry terminal or a freight agent at Mallaig, which is about 44 miles west of Fort William on the A830. Knoydart is part of the mainland but has no road link, and the Small Isles and Skye are islands, so the onward leg by boat is your arrangement or the ferry operator's. For anything beyond the port, ask us before booking.

Do you deliver to Ardnamurchan, Morvern and Strontian?

Yes, they are on the mainland. The quickest route from Fort William usually crosses Loch Linnhe on the Corran Ferry, and the alternative road round by the A830 and Lochailort is much longer. Ferry timing affects the delivery time, so give us the full address and the latest acceptable delivery, and we will plan the run and confirm it when you book.

Can you bring equipment to a film or event location around Glen Nevis or Glen Coe?

Yes, to a point a van can reach safely. Production bases and event sites in the glens are often on narrow roads or tracks, so give us a what3words reference, the unit base or car park and a contact on site. Our film and TV production courier page explains how we handle call times and kit lists.
