Carlisle courier for cross-border and Cumbrian deliveries
Carlisle sits ten miles from Scotland, at the top of the M6. We send one dedicated van to collect your consignment and drive it straight to the delivery address, whether that is Glasgow, west Cumbria, Tyneside or the far end of England.
- Glasgow and Edinburgh same day
- M6 junctions 42 to 44
- Signed proof of delivery

Ten miles from the border
Carlisle is the last English city on the M6 before Scotland, and that position shapes a lot of its same-day work. A van leaving the north of the city reaches Gretna in about a quarter of an hour, and from there the motorway continues as the A74(M) and then the M74 all the way to Glasgow. Edinburgh is a similar distance away, either up the A7 through the Borders or via the M74 and A702. For many Carlisle businesses, a customer in Scotland is closer than one in Manchester.
The other directions matter too. The A69 runs east across the Pennines to Newcastle, the A595 and A596 head south-west to the industrial towns of west Cumbria, and the M6 drops south past Penrith towards Lancaster and the rest of England.
Whichever way the job goes, it travels in one vehicle. We book a dedicated van and driver for your consignment, collect it from your premises and drive it directly to the delivery address, with no hub or sorting stop on the way. When you book, we find the nearest suitable van and confirm an estimated collection time from where it is.
Running goods into Scotland
Cross-border runs from Carlisle are simple because, legally, nothing happens at the border. There is no customs check, no paperwork and no change of driver; a consignment for Glasgow is booked like one for Penrith. Three practical points are still worth knowing:
- Low Emission Zones. Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee all have them. We use a compliant van for deliveries inside a zone.
- Distance and drivers' hours. Glasgow and Edinburgh are comfortable same-day runs. Aberdeen and Inverness are long days, and a same-day return may need a second driver or an overnight plan. We tell you at booking.
- Islands. Our standard coverage ends at the mainland. If the address is on Arran, Skye or another island, ask us first.
Our Scotland courier page covers the wider country, and the Glasgow courier service goes into detail on deliveries around the city.
What Carlisle makes and moves
Carlisle makes food, most famously biscuits at McVitie's, and tyres at the Pirelli plant, with engineering firms and distributors on estates such as Kingmoor Park and Durranhill. What moves is packaging, ingredients, chilled samples, machine parts and pallets, plus clinical consignments for the Cumberland Infirmary.
Food production
Carlisle has a long history of food manufacturing, and the McVitie's biscuit factory is one of the best-known sites in the city. Food producers and their suppliers create urgent work at both ends of the process: packaging, labels or ingredients that must arrive before a production run, and finished samples or chilled products heading to a buyer or distribution centre. Refrigerated vans are available for anything that must stay cold, with the temperature range agreed at booking.
Tyres, engineering and the industrial estates
The Pirelli tyre plant has been part of Carlisle's industry for decades, and estates such as Kingmoor Park in the north of the city and Durranhill in the east house engineering firms, trade suppliers and distribution businesses. A typical job is a replacement part for a stopped machine, a pallet that missed its network collection, or tooling that must reach a customer's plant before the next shift. Our manufacturing and engineering courier page explains how we handle breakdown and line-stop work, and pallet delivery sets out how many pallets each van can take.
Health and education
The Cumberland Infirmary is the main hospital for north Cumbria, and the University of Cumbria has its headquarters in the city. Clinical consignments must be packaged by the sender to the required standard; we deliver them to the named department or goods-in point.
Roads and pinch points
The M6 serves Carlisle at junctions 42, 43 and 44, and the Carlisle Northern Development Route (A689) links the west of the city to junction 44 without crossing the centre. Inside the city, the approaches to the Hardwicke Circus roundabout and the bridges over the River Eden are the slow points at peak times. Long stretches of the A69 to Newcastle and the A595 to the coast are single carriageway, so slow-moving farm and freight traffic can add time.

FAQ
Common questions
Is a delivery from Carlisle into Scotland handled any differently from one in England?
No. Scotland is part of mainland UK, so there are no customs formalities, no extra paperwork and no change of vehicle at the border. The same van and driver take your goods from Carlisle to the Scottish address. The only exceptions are the Scottish islands, which are not part of our standard coverage; ask us if your delivery address is on one of them.
Will a Glasgow city-centre delivery be affected by the Low Emission Zone?
Glasgow operates a Low Emission Zone in the city centre, and Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee have them too. Vehicles that do not meet the emissions standards face penalties for entering, so we allocate a compliant van for any delivery inside a zone. You do not need to do anything other than give us the full address and postcode, and we will plan the job around it.
We are on Kingmoor Park. Can a pallet reach a Manchester customer this afternoon?
Yes, in most cases. Kingmoor Park is close to M6 junction 44, and Manchester is roughly 120 miles south, around two and a half hours of driving without delays. A morning or lunchtime collection normally reaches the customer before they close. Tell us the pallet size and weight, whether you can load it by forklift, and whether the customer has a dock or needs a tail lift.
Do you deliver to Workington, Whitehaven and the rest of west Cumbria?
Yes. Workington is about 33 miles from Carlisle, and Whitehaven a little further, using the A595 and A596. These are single-carriageway roads for much of the way, so journeys take longer than the mileage suggests, especially at shift-change times near the larger industrial sites. If you are delivering to a site with controlled access, send the gate instructions and the contact's details with the booking.
