Blackburn courier for East Lancashire manufacturers
Blackburn's factories and suppliers sit along the M65, close to the M6 and M61. We book a single van and driver for your consignment, collect it from your goods-out and drive it directly to the customer, site or line that needs it.
- M65 junctions 4 to 7
- Production line parts sent direct
- Tail-lift Luton vans for heavy items

Making things on the M65
Blackburn grew on cotton weaving, and while the mills have mostly gone, the town and its neighbours still make a great deal. Engineering firms, aerospace and composites suppliers, packaging and paper converters, food producers and textile businesses are spread along the M65 corridor from Blackburn through Accrington to Burnley. BAE Systems' Samlesbury site, a few miles west of the town, anchors an aerospace supply chain across East Lancashire.
Manufacturers use couriers differently from offices. The urgent job is rarely a document. It is a part that will restart a line, tooling that must reach a machine shop before the night shift, or a batch of components a customer has been chasing. Our manufacturing and engineering courier page sets out how we handle that kind of work in more depth.
Matching the job to the service
| What you are sending | Usual booking | What we need from you |
|---|---|---|
| A part for a stopped production line | Urgent dedicated van, direct | Delivery address, contact and the time the line stops |
| One to five pallets of finished goods | Van sized to the pallets, up to a Luton | Pallet count, weights and any booking slot |
| A heavy crated machine or component | Luton van with tail lift | Weight, dimensions, handling at the delivery end |
| Regular runs between your own sites | Scheduled run | Days, times and typical load |
| Samples or prototypes for a customer | Dedicated van with a named recipient | Contact name and any packing instructions |
In every case a single van and driver carry your goods and nothing else, from collection straight to delivery. For heavier part loads and tail-lift work, see light haulage. For repeat journeys on fixed days, our scheduled courier service explains how a regular run is set up.
Before the van arrives at a factory
- Goods packed, labelled and at the goods-out door or loading bay
- Delivery note or paperwork ready to hand to the driver
- Forklift available if pallets need loading
- Any site safety rules, such as hi-vis or reporting to reception, passed on at booking
Where Blackburn's work comes from
Blackburn's work comes mainly from the industrial estates along the M65 on the eastern side of town, at Whitebirk, Shadsworth and Walker Park, plus Darwen to the south. The Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital and the offices, college and shops of the town centre make up most of the rest.
Industrial areas
Whitebirk, on the eastern edge of town by M65 junction 6, mixes an industrial estate with retail and trade parks. Shadsworth Business Park, between junctions 5 and 6, has manufacturing and distribution units on and around Duttons Way. Walker Park Industrial Estate, also on the eastern side of the town, holds smaller engineering and trade businesses. Darwen, to the south, has its own industrial areas close to the A666 and junction 4.
Healthcare
The Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital, on Haslingden Road, is the main acute hospital for East Lancashire. We deliver medical equipment and supplies to named departments there and carry properly packaged samples between hospitals, clinics and labs.
Offices and retail
The town centre, around the cathedral and the shopping centre, has council offices, professional firms and Blackburn College. Their consignments are mostly documents, IT equipment and stock for shops.

Roads and timings
The M65 runs along the southern edge of the town, with junction 4 serving Darwen, junction 5 at Guide close to the hospital, junction 6 Whitebirk and junction 7 Clayton-le-Moors. Westbound it reaches the M6 and M61 near Preston; eastbound it carries on to Burnley and Colne. The A666 runs south through Darwen to Bolton, and the A677 heads west towards Samlesbury and Preston. The M65 junction 6 roundabout and the town-centre ring road are the usual slow points at peak times.

FAQ
Common questions
Our customer's line stops at 2.00 pm unless a part arrives. Can a van collect from Shadsworth now and get there in time?
Tell us the delivery address, and we will tell you straight away whether 2.00 pm is realistic. We allocate the nearest suitable van and confirm an estimated collection time based on where it is. The run itself goes direct with no stops. Have the part packed, labelled and at goods-out so the driver can load and leave immediately.
Can you take a crated machine weighing about 400 kg from Blackburn to a customer without a forklift?
Possibly, in a Luton van with a tail lift. Tail lifts are typically rated to about 500 kg, so the crate's weight, footprint and the ground at the delivery address all matter. Tell us the dimensions and where it must end up. If the receiver has no way of moving it off the tail lift, they will need a pallet truck or a forklift on site.
Do you collect from Darwen and the villages towards the moors?
Yes. Darwen, Lower Darwen, Hoddlesden, Belthorn, Tockholes and the rest of the borough are covered, along with Accrington, Oswaldtwistle and the Ribble Valley. Moorland roads such as the A666 towards Bolton and the routes over to Haslingden can be affected by snow and fog in winter, so we allow for weather when estimating timings.
Can you run a regular weekly delivery between our two Lancashire sites?
Yes. Many manufacturers book a fixed run, for example every Tuesday and Friday afternoon, moving parts, tooling or finished goods between factories. Agree the days, times and typical load with us and we schedule it in advance. Approved businesses can also open an account with invoicing rather than paying for each job.
