Where Lancashire's motorways meet

Preston has more motorway on its doorstep than most cities twice its size. The M6 runs along the eastern edge with junctions 29 to 32. The M55 leaves at junction 32 for Blackpool and the Fylde, the M61 starts beside junction 30 and heads for Bolton and Manchester, and the M65 begins at junction 29 for Blackburn, Burnley and east Lancashire.

For an urgent consignment, that geography is the main advantage. A van collecting in Fulwood, Bamber Bridge or the city centre is usually only a few minutes from a motorway pointing the right way. The flip side is that the M6 between junctions 29 and 32 decides more Preston timings than anything inside the city, because it carries long-distance traffic as well as local trips. We watch it throughout the job and send you updates if anything changes.

Every booking follows one pattern. A dedicated van and driver are allocated for your consignment, from wherever the nearest suitable vehicle is, and we confirm an estimated collection time when you book. The driver goes directly from collection to delivery and you receive a signed proof of delivery at the end.

Aerospace and engineering, east and west of the city

BAE Systems runs two major Lancashire sites, at Samlesbury off the A59 to the east and at Warton on the Ribble estuary to the west. Around them sits a supply chain of machine shops, composite specialists, toolmakers and inspection businesses spread across the county.

Their urgent work tends to be small but exacting. A fixture that has to reach a machining cell before the next shift, a batch of parts going for inspection, or a replacement spindle component for a stopped machine are typical. Items like these travel best in a small or SWB van with nothing else on board, strapped and protected, with a named person signing at the other end. Our manufacturing and engineering courier page covers line-side deliveries and booking-in, and for precision items where condition matters, see our fragile and high-value courier service.

Before the van reaches a secure site

  • Gate, reception or stores building the driver should report to
  • Purchase order, delivery note or site reference
  • Name and mobile phone number of the person accepting the goods
  • Any vehicle registration the site needs in advance

Courts, County Hall and the professional district

Preston is Lancashire's administrative centre. County Hall, Preston Crown Court and the solicitors, accountants and surveyors around Winckley Square generate a steady flow of time-sensitive paperwork: signed contracts, completion documents, tender submissions and court bundles.

Paper deadlines are rarely flexible, so we treat them as fixed points. A tender that must be lodged at an office in Leeds by noon gets a van routed with the deadline in mind, not a slot on a round. Our legal and financial courier page explains how handover and signatures work, and the document courier page covers envelopes and archive boxes of every size.

Hospitals and the university

Royal Preston Hospital in Fulwood sits close to M6 junction 32 and the start of the M55, which makes it quick to reach from the motorway. The University of Central Lancashire's main campus is on the north side of the city centre, with research departments that occasionally need equipment or samples moved between sites.

For clinical consignments, the sender packages the goods correctly before collection. Diagnostic specimens classed as UN3373 Biological Substance Category B need triple packaging to P650. Tell us the building and department, and whether a temperature range applies; our medical and pharmaceutical courier page has more detail.

Trade and distribution around the edges

The industrial estates sit where you would expect, next to the motorway junctions. Walton Summit near Bamber Bridge is close to the M61 and M65, and Red Scar on the east side is reached from M6 junction 31A. Both house trade suppliers, manufacturers and warehouses that occasionally need a pallet moved the same day because a network collection was missed. Our pallet delivery service explains which van suits which load.

FAQ

Common questions

We supply machined parts to BAE Systems at Samlesbury. Can you deliver to the site's goods-in?

Yes. Samlesbury is a few minutes east of Preston along the A59, close to M6 junction 31. Defence and aerospace sites control access tightly, so before the van arrives we need the gate or reception to report to, the purchase order or delivery reference, and a named contact who can accept the consignment. Without those, a driver can be held at the gatehouse. The same applies to Warton, west of the city near Lytham.

Can signed documents get from Winckley Square to a Manchester office before 5.00 pm?

Usually, yes. Central Manchester is around 32 miles away down the M61, and a document run is a small van going direct, with no sorting stop. The deciding factor is traffic where the M61 joins the M60, so an early-afternoon collection gives a comfortable margin. Tell us the recipient's name and the latest acceptable time, and we confirm the signature and delivery time once the documents are handed over.

Do you cover Blackpool, Lytham and the rest of the Fylde coast?

Yes. The M55 runs from M6 junction 32 straight to Blackpool, about 17 miles, and the Fylde towns are reached from it. Lytham St Annes, Kirkham, Poulton and Fleetwood are covered in the same way as Preston itself: one dedicated van, allocated from wherever the nearest suitable vehicle is, with an estimated collection time confirmed when you book.

Can a consignment collected in Preston reach Glasgow or Edinburgh the same day?

Yes, in most cases. Glasgow is roughly 185 miles north up the M6 and M74, well within one driver's daily limits for a one-way run, so a morning or early-afternoon collection normally arrives the same day. Edinburgh is a similar distance. If you need the van to return to Preston afterwards, we plan the driving hours and tell you the options when you book.

Our unit at Walton Summit has no forklift. How do we send two heavy pallets?

Book a Luton van with a tail lift. The pallet is rolled onto the lift on a pallet truck, raised and pushed into the van, and the same happens at the far end. Tail lifts are typically rated to about 500 kg, so tell us the weight of each pallet when you book. If the delivery address has a forklift or dock, a standard van may be enough.
