Halfway between two cities
Wigan sits almost exactly between Liverpool and Manchester, with Preston to the north and Warrington to the south, and each is roughly 20 miles away or less. That position helps explain why food producers and distributors are well represented in the borough, and why Wigan courier work is so often a short, fast run to a neighbouring city rather than a long haul.
The motorway does most of the work. The M6 has three junctions on the west side of the borough: junction 25 for Ashton and the A49, junction 26 at Orrell where the M58 heads west to Skelmersdale and Liverpool, and junction 27 near Standish. To the east, the A580 East Lancashire Road runs past Leigh and Golborne between Liverpool and Salford.
Food manufacturing and chilled loads
Food is the industry most people associate with Wigan. Heinz's large factory at Kitt Green, close to M6 junction 26, is the best known, and the borough has many smaller producers, bakeries and food distributors besides.
Urgent food work falls into two kinds. The first is the goods themselves: a short-dated chilled order for a retailer's distribution centre, ingredients for another factory, or samples for a buyer's technical team. Those often need a refrigerated courier, with the temperature range agreed when you book. The second is what keeps the production lines running: a gearbox, a sensor, a set of change parts or a reel of packaging film. Those are classic same-day engineering runs, and our manufacturing and engineering courier page explains how we handle line-side deliveries.
Chilled goods need the vehicle booked as chilled
A standard van is not suitable for products that must stay inside a temperature range, even for a short run. Tell us at the start if the goods are chilled or frozen, so we send a refrigerated vehicle and the cold chain is never broken.
Industrial estates and where they sit
Most of Wigan's employment land is close to the M6 or the A49. Martland Park, next to the Heinz site at Kitt Green, has industrial and warehouse units. Further south, the A49 corridor towards Ashton links the town to junction 25, and Leigh and Atherton have their own industrial areas off the A580 and the A579.
Typical loads from these sites are a few cartons for a customer who cannot wait for the network, one or two pallets that missed a trailer, or stock for a retailer's store. For palletised goods, see our pallet delivery page. If the receiving address has no dock or forklift, a Luton van with a tail lift handles the unloading.
Hospitals: Wigan Infirmary and Wrightington
The Royal Albert Edward Infirmary is close to the town centre, and Wrightington Hospital, a specialist orthopaedic centre, is in the countryside near Appley Bridge, a short drive from M6 junction 27. Leigh Infirmary serves the east of the borough.
Hospital consignments are usually small but tightly timed: a set of surgical instruments for a list, a replacement component for a piece of diagnostic equipment, or samples transferring between sites. Senders package clinical samples before collection; UN3373 specimens need triple packaging to P650. Our medical and pharmaceutical courier page has more on handover and documentation.
Wigan to the ports
The M58 gives Wigan a direct route to the Port of Liverpool, which makes urgent export and import work practical. A carton of documents for a vessel's agent, a replacement part for a container that is waiting, or cleared imports going straight to a customer are all typical. For anything heading abroad by road, our European courier page explains what paperwork is needed before collection.

FAQ
Common questions
Can you take chilled ingredients from Wigan to a factory in Yorkshire today?
Yes, in a refrigerated van. Tell us the product, the number of cases or pallets and the temperature range the goods must stay within; typical chilled ranges are 2–8 °C, and we agree the range with you at booking. Most of West Yorkshire is under 60 miles away via the M6 or M61 and the M62. If the receiving site books deliveries in by slot, send us the reference.
A packing line has stopped and the spare part is with a supplier in the Midlands. Can you collect it and bring it to us?
Yes. We collect from anywhere in mainland UK, so the van goes to the supplier, loads the part and drives straight to your site in Wigan. Most of the Midlands is between 80 and 100 miles away on the M6. Give us the supplier's address, the part reference and the name of the person waiting for it, and we keep you updated throughout the run.
Do you deliver surgical and orthopaedic kit to Wrightington Hospital?
Yes. Wrightington, near Appley Bridge and close to M6 junction 27, is a specialist orthopaedic hospital, and it receives instrument sets and implants that are often needed for a specific list. Tell us the department and contact, and the time the kit must be on site. Sets travel boxed and secured in a van with nothing else on board, and the person receiving them signs the proof of delivery.
Can you deliver to a container terminal at the Port of Liverpool?
We deliver to the landside address your forwarder or shipping line gives you. Seaforth is roughly 22 miles from Wigan, using the M58 and the A5036. Ports run strict booking rules, so send us the terminal booking reference, the delivery window and any export documents before collection. Customs paperwork is handled by your forwarder; we carry the goods and the documents they ask us to carry.
Do you cover Leigh, Standish and Ashton-in-Makerfield as well as Wigan town?
Yes. The whole borough is covered, including Leigh, Atherton, Tyldesley, Hindley, Standish, Orrell, Golborne and Ashton-in-Makerfield. Skelmersdale, just over the boundary in West Lancashire, is covered too. As with every booking, we allocate the nearest suitable vehicle and confirm an estimated collection time when you book.
