A railway town that still builds things

Crewe grew up around one of the busiest railway junctions in Britain, and engineering never left. Alstom's Crewe Works still overhauls and repairs train components on the site of the original railway works, and the town is home to Bentley Motors' factory and headquarters on Pyms Lane. Around them sits a wider supply chain of machinists, fabricators, electronics firms and trade suppliers, plus the large distribution centres that cluster along the M6 between junctions 16 and 18.

What these businesses have in common is a low tolerance for waiting. A part that is late can stop a production line, delay a train returning to service, or leave a distribution centre short of stock for its next outbound wave. Those are the jobs a dedicated same-day van is built for.

How a Crewe booking works

You tell us what is going, where from, where to and by when. We find the closest suitable van and confirm an estimated collection time from its position. The driver collects, loads and drives directly to the delivery address, with no stop at a sorting depot and no transfer to another vehicle. You get live updates while the job runs and signed proof of delivery at the end.

Three kinds of Crewe consignment

Automotive supply

High-value vehicle manufacturing depends on suppliers delivering the right part on time, and a single missing component can hold up a car. Typical urgent jobs include trim, electronic modules, tooling and fixtures going between suppliers and a customer's goods-in, or prototype and test parts moving between engineering sites. We deliver to whichever goods-in point the receiving business names, and we follow its booking and labelling rules. Our automotive courier page explains how parts runs and line-stop calls are handled.

Rail engineering

Rail work generates awkward consignments: bogie components, couplers, electrical cabinets, air-conditioning units and test equipment that are heavy for their size. For anything that cannot be lifted by hand, a Luton van with a tail lift is often the right vehicle, and our light haulage and tail-lift delivery service explains what fits. Deliveries to rail depots and maintenance sites usually need a site contact and a booking reference, so send them with the job.

Distribution and trade

Midpoint 18 at Middlewich, the business parks around Crewe and the trade counters across south Cheshire all produce the same kind of urgent work: the pallet that missed the network trailer, the order a customer needs before they close, or stock moved between two warehouses to cover a shortage.

Ready before the van arrives

  • Goods packed, labelled and at the loading point
  • Weight and dimensions confirmed, especially for heavy parts
  • Delivery booking or PO reference, if the receiving site uses one
  • Name and phone number of the person signing at delivery

Roads around Crewe

The A500 links Crewe to M6 junction 16 and continues east to Stoke-on-Trent. The A534 runs west through Nantwich towards Wrexham and north-east to Sandbach and junction 17; the A530 heads north to Middlewich. The A500 near junction 16 and the motorway between junctions 16 and 19 are the usual slow points, and roadworks on either can add time at short notice. The railway also splits the town, so the bridges over the lines can queue at school and shift times.

FAQ

Common questions

Which M6 junction will the van use for Crewe, 16 or 17?

It depends on where you are. Junction 16 and the A500 are the natural route for the south and east of Crewe, Basford and the Stoke side; junction 17 at Sandbach suits the north of the town and the Middlewich road. The driver decides on the day using live traffic, because the A500 and the stretch of M6 between these junctions are both prone to congestion and roadworks.

Can a van carry a rail component that weighs several hundred kilograms?

Sometimes. Our largest vans carry payloads of roughly 1,000 to 1,300 kg depending on the model, and a Luton van's tail lift is typically rated to about 500 kg. A heavy item must be on a pallet or skid so it can be loaded by forklift or lifted safely, and you need lifting equipment at the delivery end if there is no tail lift. Anything beyond van limits needs a lorry, which we do not provide. Send dimensions and weight and we will confirm.

Can you run a regular shuttle between our Crewe unit and a site in the Potteries?

Yes. Stoke-on-Trent is around 15 miles from Crewe along the A500, so a daily or twice-daily run between two sites is easy to schedule. Our scheduled courier service explains how regular runs are set up, with the same collection times each day and a business account for invoicing, subject to approval.

Do you deliver to Leighton Hospital and to addresses in Nantwich?

Yes. Leighton Hospital is on the Middlewich road on the north-west edge of Crewe, and Nantwich is about four miles to the west. For the hospital, tell us the department, the building and the name of the person receiving, so the driver goes to the right entrance first time. Clinical consignments should be packed by the sender to the required standard.
