A compact city with a wide reach
Lancaster is not a large city, but the consignments that start here travel a long way. The university sends instruments and samples to collaborators across the country. The Royal Lancaster Infirmary exchanges equipment and goods with other hospitals in Lancashire and Cumbria. Down the road, Heysham has a working port with sailings across the Irish Sea and two nuclear power stations with long supply chains. And because the M6 runs along the city's eastern edge, Lancaster is also a natural starting point for runs north into Cumbria and Scotland or south towards Manchester and the Midlands.
Our service model does not change from one of these jobs to the next. You book one van and one driver for your consignment, it is collected from your door, and it is driven directly to the delivery address without being sorted at a depot or moved between vehicles. At booking we check which suitable van is nearest and confirm an estimated collection time based on that.
Who sends what from the Lancaster district
Four groups send most of it: Lancaster University with research equipment and samples, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary with clinical and pharmacy consignments, Heysham port and the energy sector with freight and contractor parts, and the trade and manufacturing firms on White Lund and the Morecambe estates with parts, pallets and tools.
- Lancaster University
The Bailrigg campus south of the city generates research equipment, prototypes, samples and examination or conference materials, much of it delicate and some of it irreplaceable.
- Royal Lancaster Infirmary
Loan equipment, pharmacy goods and clinical consignments packed by the sender to the required standard, delivered to the named department or goods-in point.
- Heysham port and the energy sector
Freight that has to meet a sailing cut-off, plus parts, tooling and documents for contractors working on the power stations and offshore energy projects in the Irish Sea.
- White Lund and the Morecambe estates
Trade suppliers, manufacturers and service firms whose urgent jobs are usually a part, a pallet or a set of tools needed on site today.
For hospital and laboratory consignments, our medical and pharmaceutical courier page explains how we work with packaging rules such as UN3373 and how refrigerated vans are used for chilled goods. For high-value research equipment, the fragile and high-value courier service covers padding, securing and condition checks at delivery.
Heysham: the sailing cut-off is the deadline
Heysham Port has freight services to Dublin, Warrenpoint and Belfast, and passenger sailings to the Isle of Man. If your goods are booked onto a sailing, the forwarder's cut-off time is the real deadline, and missing it can mean waiting a day for the next departure. We plan the collection backwards from that cut-off and deliver to the landside point the forwarder or haulier names.
We do not carry consignments onto the ferries ourselves. Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man sit outside our standard coverage, so if you need goods to go all the way, ask us and we will tell you what can be arranged.
Getting round Lancaster
Lancaster's city centre runs on a one-way gyratory system, and the bridges over the River Lune are the pinch points at peak times. The Bay Gateway, which links M6 junction 34 directly to Morecambe and Heysham, has taken a lot of port and industrial traffic out of the centre, so a van heading for White Lund or the port rarely needs to go near it now. Junction 33 serves the south side of the city and the university; junction 35 at Carnforth is the turning for the north of the district.
Heading north into the Lakes
Many Lancaster jobs go north rather than south: a part for a hotel near Windermere, samples for a lab in Kendal, documents for an office in Carlisle. The M6 is fast as far as Kendal; after that, roads such as the A591 are slower, particularly in summer. We build that into the timings we give you.

FAQ
Common questions
Can you deliver to the goods reception at the Heysham power stations?
We can deliver to the reception or goods-in point the site tells us to use. Nuclear sites run strict access controls, so the person expecting the consignment needs to arrange the delivery with site security in advance and give us the reference, the contact's name and any instructions for the driver. The driver will follow the site's rules on arrival. We do not provide escorted or security-vetted services, and we do not go beyond the point the site allows.
Our freight forwarder has booked a sailing from Heysham. Can you get the goods to the port this afternoon?
Usually, yes. From Lancaster the Bay Gateway takes a van to the port in a few minutes, and from elsewhere in the North West the M6 and junction 34 are the obvious approach. Give us the forwarder's or haulier's reference, the cut-off time and the exact delivery point at the port. We deliver to the landside location they specify. Onward shipping to Ireland or the Isle of Man is handled by the forwarder, not by us.
Can you collect a piece of research equipment from a department at Lancaster University?
Yes. Tell us the building, the department and the name of the person releasing the item, and whether there is a loading point or a lift. The Bailrigg campus is large and one-way in places, so the building name saves the driver time. Delicate instruments should be packed in their transit case or a padded crate; our guide to packing fragile items has practical advice.
Do you cover Carnforth, Kirkby Lonsdale and the villages of the Lune Valley?
Yes. We collect and deliver anywhere in mainland UK, so Carnforth, Bolton-le-Sands, Halton, Caton, Kirkby Lonsdale and the rural addresses in between are all covered. For farms and isolated properties, a map pin or clear written directions help, and so does a note of any weight limits or narrow lanes on the approach.
