A town built around an interchange

Few places in Britain are as well connected by road as Warrington. The M6 runs north to south along its eastern side, the M62 crosses from east to west to the north of the town, and the M56 runs along the south towards Manchester Airport and Chester. Liverpool, Manchester, Chester and Wigan are all around 20 miles away or less.

That goes a long way to explaining why so many distribution centres are here. It also means a Warrington courier job is often won or lost at one of a handful of junctions rather than on the open road. We plan around them, and the driver keeps you updated while the job is under way.

Every booking uses one dedicated van and driver. We allocate the nearest suitable vehicle, confirm an estimated collection time when you book, and the driver goes directly from collection to delivery with no depot in between.

Omega: distribution sheds at M62 junction 8

Omega, built on much of the former Burtonwood airbase to the west of the town, is one of the largest distribution developments in the North West. Its warehouses serve online retail, grocery and food service, and trade supply, and they straddle the M62 either side of junction 8.

The same-day work Omega generates is mostly recovery. A customer order that missed the network trailer, a pallet of stock for a store that has run out, or a part for a sortation system that has stopped. Our pallet delivery page explains which van suits which load, and the retail and ecommerce courier page covers store replenishment and rescue deliveries for online orders.

Birchwood Park and the engineering offices

Birchwood, on the north-east side near the M6 and M62, is a large business park with a strong concentration of nuclear engineering, science and consultancy businesses, alongside general offices. Much of what they send is not heavy: technical documents, drawings, laptops and servers, test equipment and non-hazardous components.

Laptops, servers and test kit travel best in a van with nothing else on board, packed in their original cases or proper transit boxes. Our IT equipment courier page covers office moves and urgent hardware swaps. We do not carry radioactive material or dangerous goods of any kind, so check the classification before booking anything that has come from a controlled area.

Sending to a secure site

Licensed and secure sites usually need advance notice of the vehicle and driver. Ask the site what it needs, give us the reporting point and contact name, and allow time for gatehouse checks in your deadline.

The three motorways and their pinch points

The routes are excellent, but three spots decide most timings:

  • M6 junction 21A at Croft, where the M6 and M62 meet. Traffic between the two motorways queues here at peak times.
  • M6 junction 20 and M56 junction 9 near Lymm, the interchange for the M56. Busy with airport and Chester traffic.
  • The town centre river crossings. The Mersey and the Ship Canal both run through Warrington, and Bridge Foot and the routes into the centre slow down quickly at rush hour.

The Thelwall Viaduct carries the M6 high over the Ship Canal and the Mersey, so motorway traffic avoids the town's swing bridges.

Manchester Airport and the ports

The M56 gives Warrington a short run to Manchester Airport's cargo area, and the M62 reaches the Port of Liverpool in under an hour in normal traffic. We deliver to the landside cargo or terminal address your forwarder specifies. For a consignment that cannot wait for any shared network, a dedicated courier is the direct option.

Warrington Hospital on Lovely Lane serves the town, and hospital deliveries follow the same rules as anywhere else: a named department and contact, and correct packaging by the sender before collection.

FAQ

Common questions

Our order missed the trailer at Omega. Can you get it to the customer before they close?

Usually, yes. Omega straddles the M62 at junction 8, so the van joins the motorway straight from the site. Give us the order size, the delivery address and the customer's closing time. For pallets, tell us the count and weights, and whether both ends have a dock or forklift. If the customer is a distribution centre with booked slots, send the booking reference too, so the driver is not turned away.

Can you carry documents and equipment from Birchwood to a nuclear site in Cumbria?

We can carry documents, IT equipment and non-hazardous parts, and delivering to a licensed site's gatehouse or stores is routine as long as access is arranged. Sellafield, for example, is roughly 125 miles north by the M6 and A595. We do not carry radioactive material or any dangerous goods. Ask the site for the reporting point, any vehicle pre-registration it requires and the name of the person accepting the delivery.

Can you take an air freight consignment from Warrington to Manchester Airport?

Yes. The airport is around 17 miles east along the M56, which is one of the shortest airport runs in the North West. We deliver to the landside cargo address given by your forwarder or handling agent, so have their booking reference and the cut-off time ready when you book. The driver hands the consignment over at the cargo shed and you receive the signed proof of delivery.

Do the Ship Canal swing bridges cause delays?

Occasionally. The Manchester Ship Canal crosses the south of the town, and the swing bridges on routes such as the A49 at Stockton Heath close to traffic when they open for shipping. For local runs between the town centre and Stockton Heath, Grappenhall or Latchford, a bridge opening can add time. The M6 crosses the canal on the Thelwall Viaduct, so motorway routes are not affected.

Do you cover Runcorn, Widnes and Lymm too?

Yes. We collect from and deliver to anywhere in mainland UK, so Runcorn, Widnes, Lymm, Culcheth, Great Sankey, Penketh and Newton-le-Willows are covered in the same way as Warrington. The vehicle sent is the nearest suitable one at the time of booking, and we confirm an estimated collection time based on where it is.
