Where Peterborough's urgent work comes from
Peterborough's position explains most of its courier work. The A1(M) runs down the western edge of the city, the A47 crosses it from Leicester towards Norwich, and the A14 is a short run south for Felixstowe and the Midlands. That combination has filled the edges of the city with warehouses, and the warehouses generate a steady flow of jobs that cannot wait for a network collection.
Add a long engineering tradition, a food economy built on the surrounding Fens and a growing office and education presence in the centre, and you get a city where one hour's booking might be a pallet of homeware and the next a single gasket for a generator.
Every booking is a dedicated van and driver. We find the nearest suitable vehicle when you call, confirm an estimated collection time, and from then on the van carries your goods and nothing else until the recipient signs.
Warehouses along the parkways
Peterborough's parkway network (the A1139 Fletton, Frank Perkins and Paston parkways, the Soke Parkway on the A47 and the Nene Parkway on the A1260) is how most freight moves round the city. The big sheds cluster near it:
- Kingston Park, off the Fletton Parkway, with large distribution centres including a major IKEA operation
- the newer logistics sites near A1(M) junction 17, where the Fletton Parkway meets the A1(M)
- Eastern Industry at Fengate, a long-established mix of manufacturing, trade counters and storage
- the Orton estates and Lynch Wood business park on the south-western side, closer to the A1 and A605
Same-day jobs from these sites tend to be recovery work: an order that missed its trailer, a store replenishment that cannot wait, or returns that need to be back at a supplier before a stock count. For anything on pallets, check our pallet delivery service for what fits each van. A Luton van with a tail lift is the usual choice where the delivery address has no dock.
Before you book a warehouse-to-warehouse run
- Pallet count, footprint and gross weight of each pallet
- Delivery booking reference and slot time, if the receiving site uses them
- Whether the delivery site has a dock, a forklift or neither
- The latest time the goods can arrive and still be useful
Engines, machinery and the Frank Perkins Parkway
Engine manufacturing has been part of Peterborough for generations, and the Perkins Engines site off the Frank Perkins Parkway is still the best-known name. Around it sits a supply chain of machine shops, fabricators, test facilities and distributors, many of them on Fengate, Werrington and the Orton estates.
Urgent engineering consignments are often small and heavy: a crankshaft, a set of injectors, a pump, a crate of fixings. They need a van matched to the weight rather than the size, and they need to go to a named person who knows what to do with them. Our manufacturing and engineering courier page sets out how we handle controlled goods-in, certificates and returns of faulty parts.
Food from the Fens
The land around Peterborough, from Whittlesey and Thorney out towards Wisbech and Spalding, is some of the most productive farmland in the country, and the packhouses, processors and cold stores that serve it generate time-critical loads. A short-shipped retailer order, chilled samples for a buyer, or replacement packaging that has to arrive before a night shift starts are all typical.
Chilled and frozen goods travel in a temperature-controlled van. We agree the temperature range with you at booking, and where the vehicle supports it we can provide temperature records alongside the proof of delivery.
City centre, hospital and university
Not every Peterborough job involves a pallet. The city centre around Cathedral Square and Queensgate has law firms, accountants and council offices, and documents for signature or court deadlines go by document courier. Peterborough City Hospital on the western side of the city receives equipment and supplies, and ARU Peterborough, the university campus that opened close to the city centre in 2022, adds research and teaching deliveries.
Getting out of Peterborough
The A1(M) is the main road south to London and north to the East Midlands and Yorkshire. Roadworks and incidents between Peterborough and the A14 junction at Alconbury can slow it, and the A47 west towards Leicester has single-carriageway stretches where a slow lorry costs time. The A47 east to Norwich is similar. We plan the route at the time of travel rather than at booking.

FAQ
Common questions
Our pallet missed the network trailer at Kingston Park. Can it still reach the customer today?
Usually, yes. A missed trunking trailer is one of the most common reasons Peterborough warehouses call us. Tell us the pallet count, weights, whether the delivery site has a dock or needs a tail lift, and any booking reference at the other end. A van sized to the load goes straight from your goods-out door to the customer, with no hub in between, so the pallet is not waiting for tomorrow night's trunk.
Can you collect a replacement part from an engine supplier and take it to a stopped line in the Midlands?
Yes. Leicester is around 45 miles west along the A47, and Birmingham roughly 95 miles via the A14 and M6, so a part collected in the morning normally arrives the same working day. Give us the supplier's address, the part number and the name of the person at the receiving goods-in. Paperwork such as a delivery note or certificate of conformity can travel with the part in the cab.
Do you collect from farms and packhouses around Whittlesey, Thorney and Crowland?
Yes. We cover rural addresses across the Fens as well as the city itself. Packhouse yards and farm lanes can be tight, so let us know about narrow access, weight limits on bridges or a preferred entrance. For produce that must stay chilled, book a refrigerated van and tell us the temperature range you need; typical chilled ranges are 2–8 °C.
We have a tender that must be at an office in London by 2.00 pm. Is that realistic from Peterborough?
Usually. Central London is about 85 road miles away, mostly on the A1(M), and the last few miles through north London are where time is lost. We look at the clock, the traffic and the exact address before you book and will tell you plainly if a deadline looks tight. The recipient signs on arrival and you receive the proof of delivery with the time.
Can you deliver to Peterborough City Hospital?
Yes. The hospital is on the western side of the city near Bretton. Hospital deliveries go to a named department or goods receipt point, so include the department, a contact and any reference the hospital has given you. Clinical samples must be packaged by the sender to the relevant rules before collection; our medical courier page explains what that means in practice.
