Stevenage courier for science and engineering
Space, defence and life sciences firms in Stevenage send consignments that cannot sit in a sorting hub. We book one van and driver for your goods, collect from the gatehouse or lab and drive straight to the delivery address.
- On the A1(M) at junctions 7 and 8
- Lab and clinical consignments handled
- Named recipient and signed proof

What Stevenage makes
Stevenage makes satellites at Airbus Defence and Space and missile systems at MBDA, and it has a growing life sciences cluster around the Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst campus and the Cell and Gene Therapy Catapult's manufacturing centre. Most of it sits along Gunnels Wood Road, between the railway and the A1(M).
Britain's first post-war new town grew up around engineering, and that has not changed.
The consignments that come out of these sites are rarely ordinary parcels. They are calibrated instruments, flight hardware sub-assemblies, prototype electronics, controlled documents and laboratory shipments, each with a named sender, a named receiver and very little tolerance for being handled more than necessary.
Why a dedicated van suits this work
A parcel network moves a box through several sortation stages and a number of vans. A dedicated courier puts your consignment in one vehicle with one driver and goes directly to the destination. For a precision part that must not be dropped, or a shipper whose contents have a limited stable time, fewer handovers is the point.
When you book, we find the nearest suitable van and confirm an estimated collection time based on where it is at that moment. You get live updates during the run and a signed proof of delivery at the end. Our fragile and high-value courier service covers how sensitive items are loaded and secured, and IT equipment delivery deals with servers, test rigs and computer hardware.
Secure sites and gatehouses
Defence and research sites usually run strict gatehouse procedures. Before the driver arrives, register the vehicle if the site requires it, give us the gate or reception to report to and the name of the person releasing the goods. Our drivers cannot enter areas that need security clearance, so goods should be brought out to the collection point.
Lab, clinical and healthcare consignments
Life sciences work means samples, reagents, cell therapy materials and equipment moving between labs, manufacturing suites, hospitals and universities. We carry consignments that the sender has packed to the required standard, and where temperature matters we can provide a refrigerated van, with the range agreed at booking and temperature records where the vehicle supports them. Our medical and pharmaceutical courier page explains what we need from you. We do not carry hazardous goods.
The Lister Hospital is the main acute hospital for the area, and clinics and GP surgeries across north Hertfordshire also send equipment and supplies between sites.
The new town layout
Stevenage's road system was designed around large roundabouts and a separate network of cycleways and underpasses. For a van, that means fast dual carriageways around the town but some confusing approaches to individual units. Many buildings on Gunnels Wood Road and on the Pin Green industrial area have deliveries at the rear, through a service road. A postcode alone often lands the driver at the wrong side of the building, so a delivery entrance and a phone number help.
Roads and journey planning
The A1(M) runs along the western side of the town, with junction 7 serving the south and Gunnels Wood Road, and junction 8 the north and Hitchin. Between junctions 6 and 8 the motorway has only two lanes in each direction, a regular source of queues in both peaks. The A602 links Stevenage with Hitchin to the west and Ware and the A10 to the south-east.

FAQ
Common questions
Our test equipment is worth a lot and must not be stacked or tipped. How do you carry it?
Tell us the dimensions, weight, orientation marks and how it should be secured. We send a van with enough floor space for the item to travel alone, upright and strapped, with nothing loaded on top. The driver stays with the consignment from your goods-in to the receiver. Tell us the value when booking so we can confirm cover or arrange extra cover for high-value goods.
Can you take a shipper from a Stevenage lab to a hospital or clinic in London today?
Yes, if the shipper is packed and labelled by you to the standard the contents require, for example UN3373 triple packaging for diagnostic specimens. Central London is about 32 miles down the A1(M). We cannot carry anything classed as dangerous goods for road transport, so check with your safety team whether the coolant or contents bring the shipper into that category.
Can you meet a deadline at a freight agent at London Luton Airport?
Usually. The airport is around 14 miles from Stevenage by road, so a collection with an hour or two to spare before the agent's cut-off is normally enough. We deliver to the agent's landside cargo premises; we do not go airside. Have the air waybill or booking reference ready, along with the agent's opening hours.
Do you deliver to wards and departments at the Lister Hospital?
Yes. The Lister is on Coreys Mill Lane on the north side of the town, close to junction 8. Give us the department, building and delivery entrance, plus a named contact. The site is large and busy, so precise directions save the driver time looking for the right door.
