Three motorways within ten minutes

Few places are as well connected by road as St Albans. The M1 runs down the western side of the city, the M25 passes to the south with junctions at London Colney and Bricket Wood, and the A1(M) is a few miles east at Hatfield. The A414 links them all, running across the south of the city as the North Orbital Road, and the old Watling Street, now the A5183, leads north-west towards Redbourn.

That geography means a van leaving St Albans can choose its line. Northbound work goes up the M1 to the Midlands or the A1(M) to Cambridge and Peterborough. Anything for west or south London, Surrey or Kent goes round on the M25. Only the central London postcodes call for a direct run in.

Going round London rather than through it

St Albans businesses often need things delivered to places that look closer than they are. Heathrow is about 25 miles away, but only by the M25; the direct route through north-west London is slower. Gatwick, the Kent ports and the south coast are all M25 journeys. We plan with that in mind, and we tell you at booking if the timing looks tight.

Luton Airport, about 12 miles north via the A1081, and Stansted, around 35 miles east, are both straightforward runs. At all three airports, we deliver landside to the cargo agent or forwarder you name, before their cut-off.

Research, testing and building science

The St Albans district has an unusually strong research base. Rothamsted Research at Harpenden is one of the oldest agricultural research stations in the world, and BRE, the building science organisation, has its main campus near Bricket Wood. Further east, the University of Hertfordshire and the Hatfield Business Park add technology, engineering and research businesses.

From these sites come consignments that need a careful, direct trip: soil and crop samples, test specimens, sensitive instruments and prototype components. We transport them as the sender has packaged them, and if they must stay at temperature, a refrigerated van with the range agreed at booking. Our urgent courier page explains how short-notice bookings work.

The city centre and its offices

St Albans is a commuter city with a large professional services sector, from solicitors and accountants to marketing, recruitment and financial firms. Many work closely with London clients, and much of their courier work is documents and IT equipment: signed agreements, tender submissions, completion packs and laptops for new starters.

A document courier booking puts the envelope in one driver's hands from your office to the recipient's signature. The city centre's narrow streets around St Peter's Street, the Abbey and the market can be slow for vans, especially on market days, so tell us if your building has a rear entrance or nearby loading point.

Porters Wood and the trade estates

Porters Wood, on the north-eastern side of the city, is the main industrial estate, with units such as the Gryphon Industrial Park and the Caxton Centre housing distributors, engineers and trade businesses. London Colney, to the south-east, has retail and business parks close to the M25.

FAQ

Common questions

Is it quicker to go round London on the M25 or straight through from St Albans?

It depends on where the delivery is. For Heathrow, west London, Surrey or Kent, the M25 is almost always the better choice, even though the mileage is higher. For the City, Westminster or Camden, the M1 or the A1 into the centre is usually shorter. Our planners choose the route on the day, and the Congestion Charge or ULEZ may apply in central London; if so, it is included in your quote.

We need trial samples taken from a Harpenden research site to a lab in Cambridge today. Can you do that?

Yes. Cambridge is about 45 miles away via the A1(M) and A505, or the M25 and M11. The samples must be packaged by your team before collection, with UN3373 Category B material in P650 triple packaging, and if they must stay cold, book a refrigerated van and tell us the range. Give us the receiving lab's goods-in hours and a named person to sign.

Can you run the same delivery from our St Albans office to London every afternoon?

Yes. A regular run like that is set up through our scheduled courier service, with the collection time, the days and the delivery point agreed in advance. If the content changes from day to day, just tell us when anything unusual is going, such as a larger load or a different recipient.

Our unit is at Porters Wood. What size van can get into the yard?

Industrial estate yards usually take anything up to a Luton van, but each one is different. If your yard is shared, has a height barrier or is regularly blocked by parked cars, tell us when you book. For heavy items without a forklift, ask for a Luton with a tail lift, which is typically rated to about 500 kg.
