A county built around four roads

Hertfordshire's towns line up along the main roads out of London, and so does its courier work. The M1 and A41 run up the west side through Watford, Hemel Hempstead and St Albans. The A1(M) runs through the middle past Hatfield, Welwyn Garden City and Stevenage. The A10 follows the Lea Valley north through Cheshunt and Ware, and the M11 skirts the east past Bishop's Stortford and Stansted. The M25 ties them together across the south of the county, and the A414 links them east to west.

Most of our Hertfordshire jobs travel along one of those roads, often towards London, which is close enough for a same-day run from almost anywhere in the county. Each job is one dedicated van and driver, going directly from collection to delivery. Booking allocates the nearest suitable van, and we confirm the estimated collection time that follows from its location.

West: Hemel Hempstead, St Albans and Harpenden

Maylands, on the east side of Hemel Hempstead close to M1 junction 8, is one of the largest business areas in the county, with distribution centres, trade counters and offices. Its urgent work is mostly stock and spares: a pallet for a store, a cage for a retailer, or a replacement part for a warehouse conveyor. St Albans adds professional firms and offices, and Harpenden has Rothamsted Research, the agricultural science institute.

Watford, with the studios at Leavesden and the offices around the town centre, has its own Watford courier page.

Centre: Hatfield, Welwyn Garden City and Stevenage

The A1(M) towns have a strong science and engineering base. Stevenage is home to major space and defence manufacturers and to the Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst, a life sciences campus, and the town's engineering firms send precise and valuable components between sites and test facilities. Hatfield has the University of Hertfordshire and Hatfield Business Park on the former aerodrome. Welwyn Garden City has offices, manufacturers and the QEII hospital, and the Lister Hospital in Stevenage is the main acute hospital for the north of the county.

For hospital and lab consignments, our medical and pharmaceutical courier page explains how samples and equipment are handled, and the refrigerated courier service covers chilled goods, with the temperature range agreed at booking.

East: Hertford, Ware, the Lea Valley and Bishop's Stortford

Hertford is the county town, with Hertfordshire County Council and a cluster of professional firms. Ware has a large pharmaceutical manufacturing site, and the Lea Valley towns of Cheshunt and Broxbourne mix warehouses, trade suppliers and growers. Bishop's Stortford sits beside the M11 a few miles from Stansted, which makes it a common collection point for air freight going landside to an agent.

South: Borehamwood, Elstree and Potters Bar

Borehamwood and Elstree have several film and television studios, and production work there is constant: props, costumes, camera and lighting equipment, hard drives with rushes and edit material. These jobs are short notice and the deadline is a call time, not an office hour. Our film and TV production courier service is set up for that rhythm.

Studio deliveries

Studios run security gates and stage numbering of their own. Give us the production name, the stage or building, the name of the person receiving and their mobile phone number, and any gate pass the production office has issued.

Roads and typical journeys

The M25 between junctions 16 and 25 is the most common source of delay, along with the M1 around junctions 6A to 10 and the A1(M) where it narrows to two lanes near Welwyn. The A414 through Hatfield and Hertford is slow at peak times.

Approximate road miles, rounded; the true figure depends on where in each town you are.

Route Approx. road distance Main roads
Bishop's Stortford to Stansted Airport 5 miles A120, M11
Stevenage to Luton 12 miles A505
Watford to central London 20 miles A41, M1
Hertford to central London 25 miles A10
St Albans to Heathrow 25 miles M25
Stevenage to Cambridge 30 miles A505, M11
Hemel Hempstead to Birmingham 90 miles M1, M6

For Luton and the airport, see our Luton courier page. For journeys north-east, our Cambridge courier service covers the city's labs and campuses. When you are ready, request a Hertfordshire quote or call 020 4525 2039.

FAQ

Common questions

Can you move props or equipment between studios in Borehamwood and a location shoot today?

Yes. Production work is usually short notice and time-specific, which suits a dedicated van. Tell us the studio gate and stage, the unit contact on set, what the items are and their dimensions, and the call time at the other end. Our film and TV production courier page covers how we work with production offices and location managers.

Do you cover the whole county, including the villages in the north and east?

Yes. We collect from and deliver to anywhere in Hertfordshire, from Tring and Berkhamsted in the west to Royston, Buntingford and the villages around the Stort valley in the east. Rural addresses take a little longer to reach than a town on the A1(M), so give us a postcode and any access notes.

We have a fixed sample run between a clinic in Stevenage and a lab in London every afternoon. Can you set that up?

Yes. Our scheduled courier service runs repeat work like this at an agreed time on agreed days. Tell us the collection window, the receiving lab's latest acceptance time and how the samples are packaged. Samples must be packaged by the sender; UN3373 Category B needs P650 triple packaging before collection.

Can a van from Hertfordshire reach Stansted Airport landside in time for an evening flight?

Usually, yes. Stansted is a few miles from Bishop's Stortford on the M11, and roughly 25 to 40 miles from most other Hertfordshire towns via the A414, A120 or M25 and M11. We deliver to the cargo agent or forwarder you name, landside only. Give us the agent's cut-off, which is often several hours before the flight, and the booking reference.

Are Watford and Luton covered on this page?

Both have their own pages. See our Watford courier service for the town, the studios at Leavesden and the business parks around the M1 and M25, and our Luton courier page for the airport and the warehouses at junctions 10 to 11A of the M1, just over the county boundary in Bedfordshire.
