Planning around the distance

Most courier pages talk about speed. In King's Lynn the more useful conversation is about time. The town sits at the southern edge of the Wash, with Norwich 44 miles east, Peterborough 36 miles west and the nearest motorway, the M11, more than 40 miles away near Cambridge. Every main route out is the A47, the A10 or the A17, and long stretches of all three are single carriageway.

That does not stop same-day work. It means the collection time decides what is possible, and we tell you straight when a deadline is out of reach. You book a van and driver for your consignment alone; they collect and drive directly to the delivery address without a depot stop. At the point of booking we find the closest suitable vehicle and confirm an estimated collection time from where it is.

Who sends urgent goods from West Norfolk

Most urgent goods come from the Hardwick and North Lynn industrial estates, the food processors and packers that serve the Fens, port agents and warehouses near the docks, and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and its contractors. Typical jobs are production line parts, pallets, chilled produce and documents.

Industry on the edge of town

Hardwick Industrial Estate, on the southern side of King's Lynn near the A47 and A10 roundabout, is the largest employment area, with manufacturers, trade counters, engineering firms and distribution units. North Lynn Industrial Estate, north of the docks, has food, engineering and port-related businesses. A typical call from either is a replacement part for a production line, a pallet that cannot wait for the next network collection, or tools for an engineer on site in Lincolnshire.

Food from the Fens

The land around King's Lynn grows a large share of the country's vegetables, and the town has food processing and packing businesses to match. Chilled and fresh produce often needs to reach a distribution centre or a wholesale market within a set window. Our refrigerated courier vans keep the agreed temperature for the whole run, and we confirm the range with you before collection.

The port

The Port of King's Lynn handles bulk cargoes such as grain, timber and steel, with agents and warehouses close to the docks. We do not handle cargo on the quay, but we do carry documents, spares for port equipment and smaller consignments between landside offices, warehouses and customers.

Healthcare and building work

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, on Gayton Road on the eastern side of town, serves West Norfolk and parts of Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire. It is included in the national new hospital programme, which means contractors and suppliers on and around the site for years to come. Our construction courier page explains how site deliveries are booked and handed over.

When next day is the better answer

Not every consignment needs a van leaving immediately. If the receiver in Manchester or London cannot take goods until 9.00 am tomorrow, a next-day timed delivery collected this evening is often the sensible choice from King's Lynn. The driver travels on quieter roads and the goods arrive at the start of the working day.

What helps a King's Lynn collection go to plan

  • The exact unit or building, not only the estate name
  • Opening hours at both ends, especially for farms and packhouses
  • Weight, size and number of pallets or boxes
  • Whether there is a forklift or loading dock at each end
  • The latest time the receiver can accept the delivery

Roads and pinch points

The Hardwick roundabout, where the A47, A10 and A149 meet south of the town, is the main bottleneck, particularly at shift changes and on summer weekends. The A17 west into Lincolnshire crosses the Nene at Sutton Bridge, where a swing bridge occasionally opens for shipping. The A10 south to Ely and Cambridge has no dual-carriageway relief for much of its length, and farm traffic slows every rural route at harvest. Our guide to common causes of courier delays covers how we plan for this kind of road.

FAQ

Common questions

Is a 3.00 pm delivery in central London realistic if you collect in King's Lynn at lunchtime?

It is tight. Central London is about 100 miles away, mostly on the A10 and M11, and the run normally takes well over two hours before the London traffic is counted. A collection by late morning gives a much safer margin. If the afternoon deadline is fixed, tell us at booking and we will say plainly whether it is achievable.

Can you collect vegetables or salad from a packhouse in the Fens and keep them cold?

Yes. Book a refrigerated van and tell us the temperature range, the number of pallets or crates and the receiver's booking slot. Packhouses and depots run tight goods-in windows, so the slot matters as much as the distance. Make sure the produce is already at temperature when the van arrives.

Do you deliver to Hunstanton, Downham Market and the villages along the coast?

Yes. All of West Norfolk is covered, from Downham Market and the Fen villages to Hunstanton, Heacham and the north Norfolk coast. Coastal roads such as the A149 are slow in summer, when holiday traffic builds, so we allow for that in the estimated delivery time we give you.

Can you take parts to a contractor working on the Queen Elizabeth Hospital site?

Yes, for goods that fit a van up to a Luton with a tail lift. Construction compounds on hospital sites usually have their own gate, a booking system and rules on where vans may wait. Give us the contractor's name, the site gate or compound, any slot reference and a contact on the day.
