The Potteries still ship breakable things
Stoke-on-Trent is six towns, Tunstall, Burslem, Hanley, Stoke, Fenton and Longton, that grew together around the pottery industry. The trade is smaller than it was, but it is still very much alive. Churchill China in Tunstall, Steelite in Middleport, Emma Bridgewater in Hanley, Moorcroft in Burslem, Wade in Etruria and Portmeirion all make ceramics in the city, and Wedgwood is just to the south at Barlaston.
Ceramics are a good example of why a dedicated van helps. A parcel network handles each box many times, through several depots. A dedicated van has one driver who loads your boxes, secures them, drives directly to the delivery address and hands them over. When you book, we allocate the nearest suitable vehicle and confirm an estimated collection time based on where it is.
Ceramics, glass and tableware
Typical ceramics jobs include:
- sample ranges for a buyer's appointment or a trade show
- a replacement order for a hotel or restaurant group whose delivery arrived broken
- pieces going to a decorator, a photographer or an exhibition
- finished stock for a retailer that needs it on the shelf before a promotion
Fragile goods still need careful packing. Wrap each item, separate pieces, fill voids, and use strong cartons. One-off and high-value pieces are covered in more depth on our fragile and high-value courier page. Tell us the value when booking; cover limits and exclusions are set out in our terms, and we can arrange additional cover where needed.
Before a ceramics collection
- Each piece individually wrapped
- No movement when the box is shaken gently
- Boxes marked fragile and this way up
- Total number of boxes and their weight ready for the booking
Warehousing and distribution
Stoke's position halfway between Manchester and Birmingham, with the A50 running east to the M1, has made it a distribution location. Sainsbury's has a large warehouse here, Amazon runs a distribution centre on the former Hem Heath Colliery site near Trentham Lakes, and business parks along the A500 and A50 hold a mix of warehousing and light industry.
These sites generate pallet and bulk work when a network trailer is full, a store has run out or an order misses its cut-off. The pallet delivery page lists how many standard pallets fit in each of our vans. For ecommerce and retail stock, see our retail and ecommerce courier page.
Offices, hospital and universities
bet365 has its head office in Stoke, and Festival Park at Etruria holds offices and call centres. Urgent paperwork and replacement IT kit are the usual jobs for these businesses.
Royal Stoke University Hospital at Hartshill is the main acute hospital for Stoke and North Staffordshire. Keele University is just west of the city, and its medical school uses the hospital. The University of Staffordshire has its main campus at Shelton, close to Stoke station.

Roads around the six towns
The A500, known locally as the D road, links the six towns to the M6 at junction 15 in the south and junction 16 in the north. It is the city's main artery and slows at peak times. The A50 runs east towards Uttoxeter and Derby, and the A34 runs north to south through the city, past the hospital. The M6 between junctions 15 and 16 can be busy, particularly when traffic diverts off the motorway further south.

FAQ
Common questions
We make tableware. How should samples be packed for a same-day courier?
Pack them as if they were going by a parcel network, even though they will not be. Wrap each piece individually, keep pieces from touching, fill every void in the box and use a strong double-walled carton. One driver loads and unloads the boxes by hand and secures them in the van, so they are not thrown or stacked under other freight. Our guide to packing fragile items has the detail.
Can you get a pallet of stock to a London store today?
Usually, if it is collected in the morning. Central London is around 155 road miles from Stoke via the M6 and M1, so the collection time and the London delivery rules decide whether it is realistic. Tell us whether the building has a loading bay and whether the pallet must be broken down by hand. Where there is no dock, book a Luton with a tail lift.
Which way will the driver go: A500, A50 or the M6?
It depends on the destination. The A500 links the six towns to the M6 at junctions 15 and 16, and is the usual route north to Manchester or south to Birmingham. The A50 runs east to Uttoxeter, Derby and the M1. We plan the route around traffic at the time, and roadworks on the A500 and at junction 15 are among the things we check before setting off.
Do you deliver to Royal Stoke University Hospital?
Yes. The hospital is on the A34 at Hartshill and is a large site with several entrances and departments, so we need the building, department and recipient. The sender is responsible for packing clinical samples and medicines correctly; our medical and pharmaceutical courier page lists the information to have ready.
Can you collect from JCB's suppliers and other firms along the A50?
Yes. Many North Staffordshire manufacturers and their suppliers sit along the A50 corridor towards Uttoxeter and Rocester, where JCB has its headquarters. For parts going to a plant, give us the goods-in point, any delivery reference and a contact, so the driver is not held at the gate.
