A city at the end of the motorway
Plymouth is a long way from most of the places its consignments come from or go to. The M5 finishes at Exeter, 44 miles away, and from there the A38 Devon Expressway is the only fast road in. That shapes how urgent work here is planned. A part that would be a two-hour run between Midlands cities is a four-hour run to Plymouth, so the time the goods are ready matters more than almost anything else.
It also explains why Plymouth businesses use dedicated vans. A parcel network has to bring a consignment to a hub and back out again, which adds a night. A dedicated van leaves the collection address and drives to the delivery address, and the only variables are the road and the clock. When you call, we look at where the nearest suitable vehicle is and confirm an estimated collection time before you book.
Devonport and the marine economy
Devonport has been building and maintaining ships for centuries and is still one of the largest naval bases in Western Europe. Around the dockyard is a dense supply chain of marine engineers, electrical contractors, fabricators and specialist suppliers. Plymouth's waterfront adds commercial boatbuilding, including Princess Yachts, plus marine science at institutions such as the Marine Biological Association and Plymouth Marine Laboratory.
Typical jobs:
- a replacement valve or pump assembly from a manufacturer in the Midlands, needed before a vessel's planned sailing
- calibrated test equipment returned to a laboratory in Bristol the same afternoon
- a set of drawings and approval documents to a naval architect's office in Southampton
- a crate of fittings from a supplier in Cornwall to a boatyard on the Plymouth side of the Tamar
Secure sites have their own rules on access and receiving, so we pass gate instructions and references to the driver in advance. Our manufacturing and engineering courier page explains how controlled goods-in deliveries work.
Derriford: hospital, university and science park
The north of the city around Derriford is Plymouth's second centre of gravity. Derriford Hospital is the main acute hospital for a large part of Devon and Cornwall, and next to it are the Plymouth Science Park and the University of Plymouth's medical and dental schools. Medical equipment, pharmacy stock, research samples and loan instruments all move in and out.
For anything clinical, the sender is responsible for packaging to the relevant rules before collection. We carry correctly packaged consignments, deliver to a named department and record who signed. Our medical and pharmaceutical courier page covers samples, pharmacy deliveries and temperature control in more detail.

Industrial estates on the edge of the city
Most of Plymouth's manufacturing and trade sits on estates near the A38 and the main routes north:
- Langage Business Park, near Plympton, close to the A38 on the city's eastern side
- Estover and Belliver, on the northern edge near Roborough, with manufacturers, engineering firms and distributors
- Marsh Mills, where the A38 meets the routes into the city, with trade counters and retail warehousing
Loads from these sites range from a single box of electronic components to pallets of finished product. For bulky or heavy items, our large item courier service and the van size guide explain which vehicle suits which load.
Millbay, the Tamar and Cornwall
Millbay is Plymouth's ferry port, with services to France and Spain. We do not drive onto the ferries from here as part of a standard booking, but our European road courier service takes a dedicated van from the UK into Europe, and we can plan the route and crossing for you.
West of the city, the Tamar Bridge carries the A38 into Cornwall at Saltash, and the Torpoint Ferry links Devonport with the Rame peninsula. Both can queue at peak times. Our Cornwall courier page covers deliveries beyond the river.
Roads and timings
The A38 Devon Expressway between Plymouth and Exeter is dual carriageway, but it is the single route east, so an incident near Ivybridge or Haldon Hill has no easy diversion. Summer Saturdays and the end of school holidays put heavy traffic on both the A38 and the M5. Long runs upcountry are within a driver's legal day, but a return journey to the North or Scotland may need a second driver or an overnight stop; we tell you at booking.

FAQ
Common questions
Can you deliver to a contractor working inside Devonport dockyard?
We deliver to the point the site tells us to use, which at a naval base or secure yard is normally a gatehouse or goods receipt area rather than a ship or workshop. Before booking, get the exact gate, the receiving contact, any delivery or pass reference and the site's rules on vehicle access. With those in hand the driver can hand over quickly and you receive signed proof of delivery with the time.
We need a part from a supplier in the Midlands in Plymouth today. Is that possible?
Often, if the part is ready early. Birmingham is around 205 road miles from Plymouth, roughly four hours of motorway and A38 in clear traffic, so a morning collection can usually arrive by late afternoon. The later the part is ready, the tighter it gets. We check the timings before you confirm and tell you honestly if the delivery is more likely to land in the evening.
Does the Tamar Bridge toll affect deliveries into Cornwall?
The Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry charge tolls on vehicles travelling east into Plymouth, not west into Cornwall. A delivery from Plymouth to Saltash or Liskeard therefore pays on the return leg. Any crossing charge the job needs is built into the fixed price you agree before collection, so there is nothing added afterwards.
Can you take chilled samples from Derriford to a laboratory upcountry?
Yes, provided the sender packages them correctly before collection. Diagnostic samples must be triple-packaged to the relevant rules, and temperature-sensitive consignments travel in a refrigerated van with the range agreed at booking. We need the collection department, the receiving laboratory and a contact at each end.
Can you collect from a yacht builder or boatyard on the waterfront?
Yes, as long as a van can reach a loading point. Waterfront yards often have height barriers, tight turning space or a single shared quay, so tell us about any restrictions and which entrance to use. Long items such as masts or rails need a long-wheelbase van or a Luton; give us the length and we will match the vehicle.
