Two roads, many towns

Somerset's courier work is organised around two main roads. The M5 runs north to south along its western side, through Weston-super-Mare, Bridgwater and Taunton, carrying most of the freight between the Midlands and the South West. The A303 crosses the south of the county past Ilminster and Yeovil towards Wiltshire and London. The A358 links them between Taunton and the A303, the A39 runs from Bridgwater along the Quantocks to Minehead, and the A37 and A36 serve the east.

Most towns sit some way from one of those roads, so the time a job takes depends on the start point as much as the destination. We look at both when you ask for a quote, and confirm an estimated collection time once we know where the nearest suitable vehicle is.

Taunton and the M5

Taunton is the county town, at junction 25 of the M5. It has Somerset Council's main offices, professional firms, Musgrove Park Hospital and a range of industrial and trade estates near the motorway. Wellington, a few miles west at junction 26, adds food and manufacturing businesses. Typical urgent jobs here are documents for signature, hospital supplies and trade parts.

Bridgwater, Hinkley and Gravity

Bridgwater, at junctions 23 and 24, has grown into one of the busiest construction areas in the country. Hinkley Point C, the nuclear power station being built on the coast to the west, draws on suppliers from all over the UK. North of the town, the Gravity enterprise zone near junction 23 is being developed as the site of a large battery manufacturing plant.

Large projects have their own rules for deliveries: booking systems, logistics centres, PPE and named receivers. Our construction courier page explains how we work with site logistics. Typical jobs include a replacement hydraulic component for a stopped machine, survey equipment for a contractor, or fixings that ran short before a pour.

Yeovil, the A303 and aerospace

Yeovil is Somerset's engineering town. Leonardo builds helicopters here, and the town has a supply chain of precision engineers, composite specialists and test facilities, with the Royal Navy's air station at Yeovilton nearby. Their consignments are usually small, valuable and accompanied by paperwork such as certificates of conformity. A dedicated van, a named recipient and signed proof of delivery are what these jobs need. See our manufacturing and engineering courier page for how we handle controlled goods-in deliveries.

A303 timings

The A303 is the quickest route from Yeovil to Salisbury, Andover and the M3, but its single-carriageway sections mean that summer weekends and Friday afternoons can add significant time. For tight deadlines, we may suggest an earlier collection or the longer motorway route.

Mendip, the Levels and the east

Street is the headquarters town of Clarks, and the surrounding area has footwear, retail and distribution businesses. Wells, Glastonbury and Shepton Mallet have food and drink producers, cider makers and event venues, including the Royal Bath and West Showground. Frome, in the east, has a mix of manufacturing, printing and creative businesses. Cheddar and the Mendip farms produce cheese and dairy that often need chilled transport.

Rural collections are routine for us. Tell us about narrow lanes, farm gates or weight limits, and we send a van that can reach you.

Bath, Bristol and the north of the county

Bath and North East Somerset, and North Somerset, are run by their own councils but are part of the historic county. For Bath, see our Bath courier page. Weston-super-Mare, Clevedon, Portishead and Nailsea look towards Bristol, and our Bristol courier service explains the Clean Air Zone, Avonmouth and the M4/M5 interchange.

FAQ

Common questions

Can you deliver to the Hinkley Point C site?

We can deliver to the point the project specifies. Large construction sites like Hinkley Point C run strict logistics arrangements, often with a booking system, a separate delivery or consolidation point and rules on vehicles and PPE. Get the delivery booking and the exact receiving address from the contractor that ordered the goods before you book, and we pass the instructions to the driver.

We are a supplier in Yeovil. Is the A303 or the M5 better for getting to London?

For central and west London the A303 is usually shorter, around 125 miles via the A303 and M3, but it has single-carriageway sections, including near Stonehenge, that slow down badly at busy times. The M5 and M4 route is longer but all motorway from Bristol. We choose on the day based on the traffic, and the price you agree does not change.

Do you cover Weston-super-Mare and Bath as part of Somerset?

Yes, we cover both, although they are run by separate councils (North Somerset, and Bath and North East Somerset). Our Bath courier page covers the city in detail, and Weston-super-Mare, Clevedon and Portishead are close to Bristol, so our Bristol courier service page is the best guide for that side of the county.

Can a chilled van collect cheese from a farm near Cheddar for a London wholesaler?

Yes. Farm dairies and creameries on the Mendips and the Levels often have narrow lanes and a single loading point, so tell us about access, the number of cases or pallets, and the temperature range. A refrigerated van holds the agreed range, and the wholesaler's signature and arrival time come back to you as proof of delivery.
