A harbour town with two halves
Poole wraps around one of the largest natural harbours in the world, and the water shapes every journey. The town centre and the quay sit on the eastern side, Hamworthy on the western side, with Holes Bay between them. Two lifting bridges connect the two halves: the old Poole Bridge at the quay and the newer Twin Sails Bridge near the port. When they lift for boats, road traffic waits.
Beyond Hamworthy, the A35 and A351 lead to Wareham and the Isle of Purbeck, which is easy to reach by road but a long way round compared with the chain ferry at Sandbanks. North and east, Poole merges with Bournemouth, and the A338 and A31 take traffic out of the conurbation. We plan every Poole job with these routes in mind, then send a dedicated van directly from collection to delivery.
The industrial estates
Poole is more industrial than many people expect. The largest business areas are:
- Mannings Heath and Nuffield industrial estates in the north of the town, near the A3049 and Fleets Corner, with manufacturers, distributors, trade counters and engineers.
- Holton Heath Trading Park, west of the harbour on the A351 near Wareham, with light industry and storage.
- Tower Park, a leisure and retail park off the A3049, with trade units nearby.
- The port area at Hamworthy, with marine businesses, freight and storage.
Urgent work from these sites varies: a machine spare for a stopped line, a pallet of components for a customer in the Midlands, or packaging stock for a business that has run short. For manufacturers, our manufacturing and engineering courier page explains how we handle production-critical parts.
Marine and boatbuilding supply chains
Poole has a long tradition of boatbuilding and marine engineering, and the RNLI has its headquarters and training college beside the harbour. That marine sector generates awkward consignments: long tubes and rails, mast sections, deck fittings, upholstery, engines and electronics, often heading to or from yards along the south coast.
Length is usually the deciding factor. Our van size guide gives typical load lengths for each vehicle, and our large item courier service explains how we secure long and bulky items. Always measure the true length, including packaging.
Summer roads
From late spring to early autumn, the roads to Sandbanks, the beaches and Purbeck get very busy, and the A31 and A338 slow on weekends and sunny afternoons. If a delivery has a fixed time, tell us early so we can plan around it.
Goods for the port
The Port of Poole at Hamworthy handles freight and ferry traffic, and hauliers and freight agents work from the port area. Operators and schedules change from season to season, so the forwarder's instructions are what count: we deliver to the landside address, contact and cut-off they give you, with the export paperwork already prepared. We do not carry goods to the Channel Islands as standard, so ask us if that is where your consignment is heading. For a direct van to an EU customer, see our European courier service.
Hospital, university and offices
Poole Hospital, part of University Hospitals Dorset, sits near the town centre. Bournemouth University's Talbot Campus is on the Poole side of the boundary, close to Wallisdown. Financial and professional firms in Poole and on the business parks along the A35 also send documents and IT equipment. For anything that must stay cold, we offer refrigerated vans, with the temperature range agreed at booking.

FAQ
Common questions
Will the lifting bridges delay a delivery to Hamworthy?
They can add a few minutes. Poole Bridge and the Twin Sails Bridge both lift on a timetable to let boats through, and each closes to road traffic while it is raised. Because there are two crossings, a driver can usually choose the one that is open, but at busy times queues build on both sides. For a fixed delivery time in Hamworthy, we allow for it when planning the job.
Do you deliver to Swanage and Studland, and do you use the chain ferry?
Yes, we deliver to both. Whether the driver uses the Sandbanks chain ferry or drives round via Wareham and Corfe Castle depends on the day: the ferry is shorter but has queues in summer and occasionally stops for maintenance or weather. The road route is around 22 miles from Poole to Swanage. We choose whichever gets your consignment there more reliably.
Can a consignment leave Poole in the evening and arrive in Birmingham early tomorrow?
Yes. Birmingham is around 160 miles by road, so an evening collection can be delivered early the next morning, before the recipient opens. Our overnight courier service covers same-night and early-morning drops. Tell us how the recipient wants the goods received out of hours: a key holder, a night-shift goods-in, or a secure drop point agreed in advance.
We need a 4-metre length of stainless tube taken to a boat builder in Southampton. Will it fit in a van?
A long-wheelbase van has a typical load length of about 3.4 metres, and a Luton about 4.0 metres, so a 4-metre item is at the limit and depends on the exact vehicle. Give us the true length, the diameter and the weight. If the item is longer than the van can carry safely, we will tell you before booking rather than on the day.
