Start with the clock, not the postcode

Most courier pages promise that anywhere is reachable today. From Truro, that needs an honest qualification. The city is around 85 miles beyond the end of the M5 at Exeter, and most of the UK's large cities are four, five or six hours' drive away. Same-day work in and out of Truro is entirely possible, but it is planned around distance, the time the goods are ready and the legal limits on how long a driver may drive.

Three questions settle almost every booking:

  1. Where is the nearest suitable van? We allocate the closest vehicle that fits the load and confirm an estimated collection time based on where it is when you book.
  2. When will the goods be ready? An hour's delay at collection becomes an hour's delay at delivery, and on a 250-mile run it may push arrival into the evening.
  3. Can one driver do it legally? Under GB domestic rules a van driver may drive for up to 10 hours a day. The distance to the collection counts as well as the delivery leg.

If the answer to the third question is no, we do not quietly hope for the best. We offer a second driver, an early-morning delivery the next day through our overnight courier service, or a later agreed time, and you choose.

Who sends and receives in Truro

Mainly the Royal Cornwall Hospital and Cornwall Council on the western side of the city, the solicitors, accountants and architects in the centre, and the trade and industrial firms at Newham and Threemilestone, which receive parts and pallets from suppliers upcountry more often than they send them.

Health and public services

Truro is Cornwall's administrative centre. The Royal Cornwall Hospital at Treliske, on the western edge of the city, is the county's main acute hospital, and Cornwall Council's headquarters at New County Hall is also on the western side of the city. Urgent consignments here are medical supplies, equipment returns, documents and IT hardware. Our medical and pharmaceutical courier page sets out what the sender should prepare for clinical goods.

Professional firms and the city centre

Solicitors, accountants, estate agents and architects in the centre handle contracts, completion documents and planning submissions for clients across Cornwall. These are light consignments with hard deadlines, often going upcountry to Exeter, Bristol or London. Truro and Penwith College, on the edge of the city, adds education and training traffic.

Trade and industry

Newham Industrial Estate, beside the river south of the centre, and the industrial units at Threemilestone along the A390 house builders' merchants, engineering firms, wholesalers and vehicle workshops. They need a part or a pallet from a Midlands or Bristol supplier more often than they send one, which is where the timings above matter most.

Coming down from upcountry

If a supplier in Bristol, the Midlands or London is sending to Truro, book as early as you can and make sure the goods are packed and labelled before the van arrives. On a long run, half an hour saved at collection is half an hour gained at your end.

The road west

Everything reaches Truro by the A30 or the A38. The A30 is now dual carriageway for most of its length through Cornwall, including the stretch between Chiverton and Carland Cross that was rebuilt in recent years, and the A39 and A390 link it to the city. The A38 crosses the Tamar Bridge at Saltash and suits deliveries from Plymouth and the south-east of the county.

The weak point is that there is no real alternative when the A30 is closed, and summer Saturdays add a great deal of traffic. We plan routes around known problems and update you during the job if something changes.

FAQ

Common questions

A part we need is in Birmingham and our site is near Truro. If we book at 10.00 am, when could it arrive?

Probably that evening. Birmingham to Truro is around 245 road miles, roughly five hours or more of driving before traffic and the collection itself are added. The van also has to reach the supplier first. We work out the whole plan when you call and give you an honest delivery estimate, and because we run 24 hours a day, an evening handover to a site contact is normal.

Can the same van bring something to Truro and take our return back up the same day?

Sometimes, but drivers' hours decide it. A van driver may drive for no more than 10 hours a day, and a round trip from the Midlands or the North to Truro can exceed that on its own. For shorter legs, such as Bristol to Truro and back, it can work. Where it cannot, we suggest a second driver or a next-morning return, and we tell you which at booking.

We are sending equipment from Truro to a customer on the Isles of Scilly. Can you take it all the way?

The islands sit outside our standard mainland service, so ask us before you book. In most cases goods for Scilly travel on the islands' own freight service, and we can deliver your consignment to the mainland departure point you have arranged, with a signed handover there. We will check what is possible for your dates and tell you plainly.

Can you deliver medical supplies to a department at the Royal Cornwall Hospital?

Yes. The hospital at Treliske has several entrances and delivery points, so give us the department, the building and a contact who can sign, rather than the main reception. If the consignment includes clinical samples, the sender packs them to the required standard before collection. A refrigerated van is available when the goods must stay within an agreed temperature range.

Is Falmouth or Penzance a same-day job from Truro?

Easily, on a normal day. Falmouth is about 11 miles from Truro on the A39, and Penzance around 26 miles west along the A30. Both are short local runs; the main thing that slows them is summer traffic near the coast and the occasional incident on the A30, which is the only main road west. We confirm an estimated collection time when you book.
