A county town with a motorway on its doorstep
Taunton is where Somerset's paperwork, health service and much of its trade come together. The town holds the county council's main offices, the courts at Shire Hall and a cluster of solicitors, accountants and surveyors around the centre. On the edge of town, Musgrove Park Hospital is the main acute hospital for a large part of the county, and the UK Hydrographic Office, which produces Admiralty charts, is one of the bigger employers.
That mix produces a steady flow of light, time-sensitive consignments rather than heavy freight: signed contracts, tender submissions, medical supplies, a replacement laptop for someone who cannot work without it. It also produces a fair amount of trade work, because Taunton is the service centre for the farms, builders and small manufacturers of West Somerset and the Blackdown Hills.
For every one of those jobs we send a single dedicated van. It collects from you, drives straight to the delivery address and hands over to the person named on the booking. The van we allocate is the closest one suited to the load, and its position at the moment you book sets the estimated collection time we give you.
Where collections come from
Most Taunton collections come from around junction 25 of the M5 and the north-east of town, including Hankridge, Priorswood and the Crown Industrial Estate. The rest come from smaller units along the A38 towards Monkton Heathfield and Wellington, and from offices in the compact town centre, where loading is limited.
Junction 25 and the east of town
Most of Taunton's commercial traffic gathers around junction 25 of the M5. The retail and trade parks at Hankridge are beside the junction, and Nexus 25, a council-backed employment site for offices, light industry and warehousing, is being developed next to it. Priorswood and the Crown Industrial Estate, on the north-east side, have the trade counters, engineering workshops and builders' merchants that most often need a part moved the same afternoon.
Monkton Heathfield, Wellington and the A38
North of the town, the A38 runs out past Monkton Heathfield towards Bridgwater, and further growth is planned along that side of Taunton. To the west, the A38 heads to Wellington and junction 26. Smaller industrial units are scattered along both stretches, and they are easy collections as long as we have the unit number and a phone number for the person on site.
The town centre
Central Taunton is compact but has a one-way system and limited loading, especially around the high street and the streets near the castle. Offices that send regular paperwork usually do best with a fixed collection point, such as a rear entrance or a named reception. For documents that must be signed for in person, our document courier service is the natural fit.
Booking from a Taunton office
If the consignment is a bundle or a box of files, tell us roughly how many and how heavy. A single envelope and twelve archive boxes need very different vehicles, and getting it right at booking saves a second trip.
Regular runs as well as one-off jobs
Not all Taunton work is an emergency. Practices with branches in Bridgwater, Yeovil and Exeter, and firms that move samples or stock between sites on the same days each week, often book a scheduled courier run instead of calling each time. The route and timings are agreed once, and you can still add urgent one-off jobs on top.

Roads and timings
Taunton sits on the M5 between Bristol and Exeter, with junction 25 serving the town and junction 26 serving Wellington. The A358 runs south-east from junction 25 to the A303 near Ilminster, giving a second route towards Salisbury, the M3 and London. Junction 25 and the roads into the town centre are the usual pinch points at peak times, and summer holiday traffic on the M5 southbound can slow everything towards Devon.

FAQ
Common questions
Is it better to send Taunton consignments to London up the M5 or across on the A303?
It depends on the time of day and the delivery address. The A358 and A303 route is shorter, at around 145 miles to central London, but it has single-carriageway stretches that slow down on Fridays and summer weekends. The M5 and M4 route is longer, roughly 165 miles, but motorway almost all the way and often more predictable. We pick the route when the job is planned and the delivery estimate we give you reflects it.
Can you take papers from a Taunton office to a court or chambers in Bristol this morning?
Usually, yes. Bristol is about 50 miles up the M5, so a collection early in the morning normally reaches the city centre before lunch, traffic permitting. Tell us the building, the floor and the person who must sign, and whether the bundle is boxed or in folders. Our legal courier page explains how signed handovers and recorded times work for documents with a deadline.
We have a supplier at Wellington. Do you treat that as part of Taunton?
Yes. Wellington sits at junction 26 of the M5, a few miles south-west of Taunton, and we collect there in exactly the same way, as we do from Bridgwater, Chard, Ilminster, Minehead and the villages in between. We send whichever suitable van is closest when you call, so a market town is handled no differently from Taunton itself.
Can a delivery go to a ward or department at Musgrove Park Hospital?
Yes. Give us the department name, the building or entrance it uses for deliveries and a contact who can sign. Large hospitals have several entrances and the main front door is rarely the right one for goods. If you are sending clinical samples, they must be packed to the required standard before collection, and our medical and pharmaceutical courier page sets out what that involves.
