Small van, long-wheelbase van and Luton van in company livery

A town at the junction of two trunk routes

Darlington sits where the A1(M) running north and south meets the A66 running east to Teesside and west over the Pennines to Penrith and the M6. Scotch Corner, at the junction of the two, is a few miles to the south-west. For a courier that geography matters more than anything else: from Darlington a van can be on a fast road towards Newcastle, Leeds, Middlesbrough or Cumbria within minutes.

It also explains the town's work. Darlington has built railway equipment since the Stockton and Darlington Railway opened in 1825, it has built diesel engines for decades, and it now houses a large concentration of civil servants. Each of those generates urgent consignments of a different kind.

Engines, trains and the parts behind them

Cummins builds engines at its plant on Yarm Road in the east of the town, and Hitachi Rail assembles trains at Newton Aycliffe, a short drive north. Around those two sites sits a long chain of machine shops, fabricators, electrical specialists and component suppliers, many of them on Aycliffe Business Park, Faverdale on the north-west edge of Darlington, and the estates off the A66 to the east.

In that world, the urgent job is usually a part that is holding something up: a casting that failed inspection and needs replacing, a wiring loom for a train on the build line, a test rig component going back to its maker for repair. Those consignments go best as a single dedicated van with no other stops. Our manufacturing and engineering courier page explains how we handle line-down work, from the gatehouse reference to the signature at goods-in.

Weights before vehicles

Engineering parts are often small and heavy. Give us the weight as well as the size, because a crated component can exceed the payload of a small van, or the rating of a tail lift, long before it fills the floor.

Papers for the Economic Campus and the town centre

The Darlington Economic Campus brings staff from HM Treasury and several other government departments together in the town centre. Add the borough council, solicitors and accountants around the market area, and the local courts, and you have a steady flow of signed documents, tender submissions and evidence bundles that cannot simply be posted.

For a document run, the important details are the building, the floor and the named recipient, because a large office with a central reception can lose an envelope as easily as a sorting office. With those, the driver delivers to the right desk and you receive the recipient's name and the time on the proof of delivery. Our document courier service covers single envelopes, archive boxes and same-day returns.

Hospital and airport destinations

Darlington Memorial Hospital is the main hospital in the town, and the county's other large hospitals are at Durham and Bishop Auckland. Teesside International Airport lies about six miles east, close to the A67. We deliver to landside addresses at the airport, such as an office or a freight agent's premises; we do not work airside.

Roads and timings

The A1(M) passes the west of the town at junctions 57, 58 and 59, and the A66(M) spur links junction 57 to the south of Darlington. Southbound, the A1(M) carries vans towards Leeds and London; northbound, to Durham, Tyneside and on to Scotland. The usual slow points are the A66 around the southern edge of the town at peak times and roadworks on the A1(M) near Scotch Corner and Catterick.

When you book, we look for the nearest suitable vehicle, which might be finishing a delivery on Teesside or coming north on the A1(M), and give you an estimated collection time on that basis.

FAQ

Common questions

A part we need is in Penrith. How long is the A66 run to Darlington?

Penrith is roughly 60 road miles west of Darlington along the A66, a route that climbs over Stainmore and has long single-carriageway stretches. In good conditions it is a straightforward run. In snow, ice or high winds the high section can slow badly or close, and there is no quick alternative, so we check conditions before the van sets off and tell you if the estimate changes.

Can you deliver to a supplier gate at Aycliffe Business Park?

Yes. Newton Aycliffe is about six miles north of Darlington, a short run up the A167 or the A1(M). Large manufacturers on the park run their own goods-in rules, so send us the gate or door number, the purchase order or delivery reference and the name of the person receiving. Without those, a driver can be held at security even when the van is on time.

Our crated engine component weighs about 600 kg. Which vehicle should we book?

A short or medium-wheelbase van can usually carry it, with typical payloads around 800 to 1,200 kg, but someone needs a forklift to load and unload. A Luton tail lift is typically rated to about 500 kg, so it is not the answer for this crate. Give us the crate dimensions and weight and we will confirm the right vehicle; our van size guide shows typical load spaces.

Do you collect from Teesdale and the villages towards Richmond?

Yes. Barnard Castle, Middleton-in-Teesdale, Richmond, Catterick and the farms and villages in between are all covered, as is anywhere else in mainland UK. A rural address takes a little longer to reach, and a what3words location or clear directions help the driver find a farmyard or a workshop without a proper sign.
