Engineering in the valleys
Huddersfield's mills and workshops have been making things for two centuries, and the town still has a manufacturing base out of proportion to its size. Two of its best-known employers are public names: David Brown Santasalo makes heavy industrial gearboxes at Lockwood, and Cummins makes turbochargers in the town. Around them are machinists, foundries, chemical and textile firms, and specialist suppliers spread along the Colne and Holme valleys and the Leeds Road corridor.
The urgent work they generate is often heavy and always specific. A bearing or gear set for a customer's stopped machine. A turbo assembly for an engine test. A casting that must reach a machine shop before the weekend. These are not parcels to drop into a network. They need the right van, the right loading equipment at both ends and a driver who goes straight there.
That is how we work. One dedicated vehicle and driver are booked for your consignment and travel directly from collection to delivery. When you book, we find the nearest suitable vehicle and confirm an estimated collection time based on where it is.
Choosing the vehicle for a heavy part
The weight of a part matters as much as its size, because a van's payload is what remains after the vehicle's own weight, driver and fuel. A 3.5-tonne van carries far less than 3.5 tonnes. As a rough guide, using typical figures that vary by model:
| Load | Typical vehicle | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Small parts, boxed bearings | Small or SWB van | Up to around 500 kg in a small van |
| One or two pallets of components | SWB or MWB van | Forklift loading at both ends |
| Long shafts or sections | LWB van | Load space about 3.4 m long |
| Heavy crate, no forklift at delivery | Luton van with tail lift | Tail lift typically rated to about 500 kg |
We confirm the exact vehicle at booking. Our van size guide has fuller dimensions, and the manufacturing and engineering courier page explains how line-down and spares runs work.
Lifting and loading
A driver can only move items by hand within safe manual handling limits. Anything heavier needs a forklift or pallet truck at collection and delivery, operated by site staff. Tell us at booking so there are no surprises at the dock.
Textiles, the university and the hospital
Huddersfield and the Colne Valley still produce fine worsted cloth for tailoring houses at home and abroad. Samples, swatch books and short lengths of cloth are light but time-bound, especially in the run-up to a collection or trade show. The mills that make them are often in the steep side valleys, where access to the loading door is the first thing to plan.
The University of Huddersfield's Queensgate campus sits beside the ring road, with laboratories and engineering research that send equipment and materials to partners elsewhere. Huddersfield Royal Infirmary at Lindley is the main hospital. For IT and laboratory equipment, our IT equipment courier page covers how computers and sensitive equipment are packed and handled.

Roads and pinch points
The M62 runs along the north of Huddersfield, with junctions 23, 24 and 25 serving the town. Junction 24 at Ainley Top, where the A629 and A643 meet the motorway, is the classic bottleneck and backs up at peak times. The A62 runs east to Leeds and west over Standedge to Oldham, the A629 north to Halifax and south towards Penistone and Sheffield, and the A616 heads south-east to the M1. The town-centre ring road is busy throughout the day.

FAQ
Common questions
Can you take a heavy gearbox component from Huddersfield that is too big for a small van?
Yes, within van limits. Heavy items on a pallet or skid usually need a Luton van with a tail lift (typically rated to about 500 kg) or a larger van loaded by forklift at your goods-out. Tell us the weight and dimensions, including packaging, and whether there is a forklift at both ends. We do not run lorries or cranes, so anything heavier than a van can carry is outside what we offer.
Is the M62 over the Pennines a problem for same-day delivery to Manchester?
It can slow things down, but it rarely stops a job. Manchester is about 26 miles from Huddersfield on the M62, and the route over the summit is exposed in bad winter weather. The A62 through Marsden and the Standedge route is an alternative but slower. Give us your deadline at booking and we plan the route on the conditions at the time.
We are a Colne Valley textile firm. Can you deliver cloth samples to a London fashion house tomorrow morning?
Yes. Central London is about 190 road miles via the M1, so an afternoon or evening collection can arrive first thing the next day; see our next-day courier service for timed morning deliveries. Wrap rolls and swatch books so they stay clean and dry, and tell us how many pieces there are.
Do you deliver to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary?
Yes. Huddersfield Royal Infirmary is at Lindley, on the west side of town, and is part of Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust, which also runs Calderdale Royal Hospital in Halifax. Give us the department and contact name, and package samples or medicines to the required standard before collection. We get a signature from the named recipient.
Can you collect from a mill unit in Holmfirth or the Colne Valley?
Yes. Many valley businesses work from converted mills with steep yards, tight entrances and loading doors on upper floors. Tell us about the access when you book: the approach road, any height or width limits, and whether goods come down in a goods lift or by hand. That lets us send a van that fits the yard, and saves the driver searching for the right door.
