Halifax work starts on a hillside
Halifax sits in a steep bowl above the River Calder, and much of the rest of Calderdale is strung along narrow valleys either side of it. That shapes every courier job here. The motorway is a few miles away rather than on the doorstep, some roads into the valleys are the only route in, and a van that is easy to park in a business park can struggle on a cobbled terrace in King Cross or Akroydon.
So the first thing we ask is what you are sending and where it is coming from. That decides the vehicle, the route to the M62 and the estimated collection time we give you, which is based on the nearest suitable van when you book. From there, one van and one driver take your consignment directly to the delivery address with no depot stop on the way.
Which Halifax businesses use a dedicated courier?
Mostly financial and professional firms, food and confectionery makers, and engineering and manufacturing companies spread across Halifax, Brighouse, Elland and Sowerby Bridge. Their consignments vary from a single envelope to a few pallets, but share one need: the goods must arrive today, intact and signed for.
Finance and professional services
The Halifax Building Society grew up here, and the Halifax brand, now part of Lloyds Banking Group, still has its head office on Trinity Road. Around it are insurers, accountants, solicitors and business service firms whose urgent work is paper: signed agreements, completion bundles, original deeds and sealed tenders. Our legal and financial courier page explains how chain-of-custody and signature-on-delivery jobs are run.
Food and confectionery
Nestlé makes Quality Street at its Halifax factory, and the district has a wider spread of bakeries, food producers and drinks businesses. Same-day vans tend to cover the gaps: samples for a retailer's technical team, a short order that missed the trunk vehicle, or chilled product needing a refrigerated courier to a distribution centre the same evening.
Engineering and manufacturing
The mills that once made carpets and textiles now share the valleys with engineering firms, fabricators, packaging makers and trade suppliers. Dean Clough, the vast former Crossley carpet works, has become a mix of offices, galleries and small businesses. A typical job might be a gearbox casing collected from an Elland workshop and driven to a customer in the Midlands, or a pallet of components from Brighouse that has to reach a plant before the next shift. See our manufacturing and engineering courier page for line-down and heavy-part work.
Loading on steep sites
Many Calderdale yards slope or sit below road level. If yours does, tell us when you book, and have the goods at the loading point on a pallet or trolley so the driver can load safely without carrying heavy items up a gradient.

Calderdale Royal Hospital and Calderdale College
Calderdale Royal Hospital at Salterhebble, just off the A629 on the south side of town, is the main acute hospital for the district. Hospital deliveries go far faster when you give us the department, building and recipient name, and the sender must package any samples to the required standard. Calderdale College in the town centre receives equipment and teaching materials as well.
Getting from Halifax to the M62
The A629 runs south from Halifax through Salterhebble and Elland to M62 junction 24 at Ainley Top, and north to Keighley. The A58 heads east through Godley Cutting and Hipperholme towards Leeds, and west through Sowerby Bridge and Ripponden to the Pennines. The A646 follows the Calder Valley to Hebden Bridge and Todmorden. Brighouse is served by junction 25.
The slow points are the Hipperholme crossroads, the A629 through Salterhebble at peak times, and the town centre one-way roads around the Piece Hall and the bus station. Ainley Top roundabout can also back up when the M62 is busy.

FAQ
Common questions
We are a manufacturer in Sowerby Bridge. Which way will the van go to reach the M62?
It depends on where the delivery is. For Manchester and the west, the usual route is the A58 towards Ripponden and the M62 at junction 22, or back through Halifax to junction 24. For Leeds, Sheffield and the south, vans normally take the A629 to Ainley Top. We choose the route on the day, allowing for roadworks and peak traffic.
Can you collect from Hebden Bridge or Todmorden when the valley road is flooded?
If the A646 is closed, the van has to use the hill roads around the valley, which are slower and less suitable for larger vehicles. We will tell you before collection if conditions affect the timing or the size of van we can send. Where it is safe to collect, we confirm a revised estimate rather than leaving you guessing.
Can you deliver a box of signed agreements to a bank office in Halifax town centre and wait for a countersignature?
Yes. Book it as a wait and return, and tell us roughly how long the signing will take, who the driver should ask for and where the paperwork goes afterwards. The driver stays with the documents throughout. Our document courier page explains how sealed envelopes and signature runs are handled.
Can a chilled food order from a Calderdale producer reach a supermarket depot this evening?
Usually, if a refrigerated van is free for your timing. Give us the depot address, the booking slot and reference, the product, the pallet or case count and the temperature range you need, which we agree at booking (2–8 °C is the usual chilled band). The product must already be at temperature when the driver arrives.
