Sending from Shipley without going through Bradford first

Shipley sits where the Aire Valley narrows north of Bradford, a few miles from the city centre but with its own town centre, mill buildings and workshops. A parcel network would usually route a Shipley consignment through a sorting hub before it heads anywhere. A dedicated van does not. It comes to your door, loads your goods and drives directly to the delivery address.

That matters most for the jobs that come out of Shipley every week: a box of signed contracts for a Leeds office, a crated print for a London collector, a part machined on the valley floor and needed at a factory in Lancashire before the night shift. One driver handles the consignment from start to finish, with live updates while it travels and a signed proof of delivery at the end.

When you call, we look for the nearest suitable van at that moment and give you an estimated collection time based on where it is.

Is Shipley inside Bradford's Clean Air Zone?

Partly. Bradford's Clean Air Zone is not confined to the city centre. It runs up the valley along Canal Road and the A650, taking in much of Shipley and Saltaire. Vans that do not meet the zone's emissions standard are charged; compliant vans are not, and private cars never are.

You do not need to check which side of the boundary your address falls on. We price every Shipley job with the zone in mind, and if the van allocated to you would be charged, that cost is in the quote you accept before collection. Addresses higher up in Baildon or further out towards the moors may sit outside the zone altogether, and the price simply reflects that. For jobs that start or finish in the city itself, see our Bradford courier page.

Saltaire and the mill buildings

Saltaire, the model village built by Sir Titus Salt and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is still a working place. Salts Mill holds galleries, shops and offices, and other mill conversions along the valley house design studios, small manufacturers and professional firms. Shipley College also has buildings in the village.

The village was laid out for Victorian mill workers, not for vans. Its terraced streets are narrow, parking is tight and weekend visitors fill the roads around Victoria Road and the mill. A few details at booking make the collection much smoother:

Before a Saltaire or Shipley mill collection

  • Which entrance, which floor and whether there is a goods lift
  • Where a van can legally stop, and for how long
  • A named contact with a mobile phone number
  • Packed weight and dimensions, so we send the right size of van

What Shipley businesses send

Most Shipley bookings come from three groups: small manufacturers and trade workshops on the valley floor, offices and creative firms in and around Saltaire, and businesses sending to or from Bradford and Leeds. Each gets the same service, one van booked for the job and driven straight to the delivery address.

Workshops and light industry

The industrial units on the valley floor, between Shipley and Bradford and out towards Bingley along the A650, house engineering shops, fabricators, printers and trade suppliers. Their urgent work tends to be small and specific: a replacement component for a stopped machine, tooling going back for repair, or a short run of printed stock for a customer's launch. When a machine is down, our urgent courier service sends the nearest suitable van straight away, and our manufacturing and engineering courier page covers stopped lines and awkward loads in more detail.

Offices and creative studios

Design agencies, architects, accountants and solicitors in the mill offices and the town centre send signed documents, presentation boards, samples and proofs. Many of these are only a short run from Leeds or Bradford, where a direct van can wait for a signature and bring the paperwork back the same afternoon. Our document courier page explains how signature runs and sealed envelopes work.

Roads in and out of Shipley

The A650 is the spine of the valley, running through Shipley between Bradford and Bingley, Keighley and Skipton. The A657 heads east through Thackley and Calverley towards Leeds, and the A6038 climbs north past Baildon to Guiseley and Otley, the usual route for Leeds Bradford Airport. Canal Road links Shipley to central Bradford on the valley floor.

The main pinch points are the junctions around Shipley town centre, including Fox Corner, and the A650 approaching Saltaire, both of which back up at peak times. Heading for the M62, vans normally go through Bradford to the M606.

FAQ

Common questions

Our office is in a converted mill in Saltaire. Can the driver come up to the second floor?

Usually, yes, as long as the load is something one person can carry safely and there is a lift or a usable stair. Tell us the floor, the building entrance, whether there is a goods lift and where the van can stop. For heavier items, have them brought down to a ground floor reception or loading door before the van arrives.

Can you take finished artwork from a Saltaire gallery to a buyer in London today?

Yes. Central London is roughly 210 road miles away, mostly on the M1, so a morning collection normally arrives the same evening. Have the piece wrapped and crated or boxed before the driver arrives, and tell us its value so we can confirm cover. Our fragile and high-value courier page explains how we handle delicate items.

We are in Baildon, up the hill from Shipley. Is that treated differently?

No. Baildon, Thackley, Windhill, Frizinghall and the rest of the area are covered exactly as Shipley is. The steep, narrow residential streets above the town centre can be tight for a long van, so say if your road has restricted parking or a weight limit and we will choose a suitable vehicle.

Can you run the same Shipley to Leeds collection every week?

Yes. Regular runs are booked as a scheduled service, with the collection day, time window and route agreed in advance. You still get a dedicated van on each run and a signed proof of delivery. Our scheduled courier page covers how contract runs are set up and changed.
