Teesside runs on its plants

The skyline south of the Tees says a lot about Middlesbrough's same-day work. Wilton International, the chemical and process complex between Middlesbrough and Redcar, is home to manufacturers and the contractors who maintain them. Teesworks, the former Redcar steelworks, is being redeveloped for new industry and energy projects. Across the river, Billingham and Seal Sands host more process plants, and fabrication and engineering yards line the riverbank. Teesport, one of the major ports on the east coast, handles containers, bulk cargo and project freight.

Sites like these do not stop for want of a large lorry. They stop for want of one part: a seal kit, a pump impeller, a control card, a calibrated instrument or a set of revised drawings for a contractor on night shift. That is the work a dedicated same-day van suits best.

What a plant spares run looks like

It is one dedicated van collecting a part and driving it directly to the plant, often against the start of a shift during a shutdown. We confirm an estimated collection time, send live updates on the way, and get a signature from the named recipient at the gatehouse or contractor reception.

  1. You call with the part and the deadline

Tell us where it is, where it is going, the weight and size, and when the site needs it. If the plant is in a shutdown, say so: the deadline is usually the start of a shift.

  2. We allocate the nearest suitable van

We confirm an estimated collection time based on that van's position. Heavy or crated items go in a Luton van with a tail lift, within its rated limit.

  3. The driver collects and goes direct

No hub, no trunking, no second vehicle. You get live updates while the van is on the road.

  4. Delivery to the point the site names

The driver reports to the gatehouse or contractor reception, follows the site's rules, and gets a signature from the named recipient.

One limit is fixed: we carry non-hazardous goods only. Spare parts, tools, instruments, documents and samples that are not classed as dangerous goods are all fine. Chemicals, gases and anything under the ADR rules need a specialist carrier.

For more on breakdown and line-stop work, our manufacturing and engineering courier page goes into detail. When a part is too heavy to lift by hand, the light haulage and tail-lift delivery service explains which vans can take it.

Teesport and riverside freight

Teesport sits on the south bank near Grangetown. When a consignment needs to reach a forwarder or a container yard for an export cut-off, or an imported part needs to go straight from the port to a factory elsewhere, a dedicated van takes it directly. Port areas have strict delivery rules: give us the forwarder's reference and the exact delivery point, and have export documents ready before we collect.

Town centre, university and hospital

Middlesbrough town centre is home to Teesside University, council and professional offices, and the creative and digital businesses around Middlehaven. Most of that work is documents, IT equipment and exhibition or event kit. James Cook University Hospital, on Marton Road in the south of the town, is the main acute hospital for Teesside and a regional centre for specialist care, so equipment and properly packaged clinical consignments move in and out of it regularly.

Roads and crossings

The A19 crosses the Tees on a high viaduct between Stockton and Middlesbrough and is the main north to south route through Teesside. It is also the most common source of delay, particularly at peak times and when roadworks are on. The A66 runs east to west through the town towards Darlington and the A1(M), and the A174 Parkway links the southern suburbs, James Cook and Redcar. Other river crossings, such as the Newport Bridge, take local traffic between Middlesbrough and Stockton.

Night deliveries to industrial sites

If a delivery will arrive outside office hours, confirm who will be on site to receive it and how the driver should contact them. A gatehouse that is not expecting a van at 3.00 am can hold it up for a long time.

FAQ

Common questions

Can you deliver to a contractor's cabin at Wilton International?

We deliver to the gatehouse, goods-in or contractor reception that the site directs us to. Large chemical and industrial sites run their own access and safety rules, so the person ordering needs to tell site security a delivery is coming and give us the reference, the contact's name and any instructions for the driver. We carry non-hazardous goods only: spares, tools, instruments and documents are fine, but anything classed as dangerous goods needs a specialist ADR carrier.

A plant shutdown overnight needs a spare from a supplier in the Midlands. Can you run it tonight?

Yes. We work 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Birmingham to Middlesbrough is around 190 miles, so an evening collection reaches Teesside in the small hours. Tell us the weight and dimensions, whether the item is crated or palletised, and who will receive it on site at night. Our overnight courier service explains how night deliveries are planned.

Our clinic in Stockton needs equipment taken to James Cook this morning. Is that possible?

Yes. James Cook University Hospital is in south Middlesbrough, a short run from Stockton via the A66 or A19 and the A174 Parkway. Give us the department and the entrance to use, and the name of the person receiving. Clinical consignments must be packed by the sender to the required standard; our medical courier page sets out what that involves.

Do you cover Redcar, Hartlepool and Billingham as well?

Yes. The whole of Teesside is covered, along with the rest of mainland UK: Redcar and the Teesworks site to the east, Billingham and Stockton across the river, Hartlepool to the north, and Guisborough and the villages towards the North York Moors. Each job uses one dedicated van, sent from wherever the nearest suitable vehicle is.
