A port city at the end of the M62
Hull is where the M62 finishes and the North Sea begins. The port runs along the north bank of the Humber, with freight, container and ferry traffic from King George Dock on Hedon Road, and P&O Ferries sails overnight from there to Rotterdam. That gives Hull businesses two kinds of deadline: the ones set by customers elsewhere in the UK, and the ones set by sailing times.
Both are handled the same way. We book one dedicated van and driver for your consignment, and it travels directly from collection to the delivery address without passing through a depot. When you book, we find the nearest suitable vehicle and confirm an estimated collection time based on where it is.
Port, ferry and Europe
Delivering to the port
Much of Hull's urgent work is getting goods to someone else's freight booking: a pallet for a groupage trailer, a crate for a container, documents a forwarder needs before a vessel closes. The port and the hauliers around it work to fixed cut-offs, and late goods mean waiting for the next sailing. Give us the forwarder's reference and the latest acceptable delivery time when you book, and make sure the export paperwork is ready before collection.
Driving straight into Europe
Sometimes the better option is not a freight booking at all, but a van that goes the whole way. Our European courier service does exactly that: one van, one driver, collection in Hull and delivery to an address in the EU, with the crossing chosen to suit the destination. For Dutch, Belgian and northern German addresses, Hull's own ferry is often the natural route.
Customs paperwork before the van leaves
Goods moving from the UK to the EU need an export declaration and EU import formalities. A customs agent normally handles the declarations, but they need your commercial invoice, EORI number and commodity codes first. Our guide to sending goods to Europe by road after Brexit sets out what to prepare.
Offshore wind, engineering and manufacturing
The Humber has become a centre for offshore wind. Siemens Gamesa makes turbine blades at Alexandra Dock, and the wider supply chain of engineering, marine and maintenance firms sits around the estuary on both banks. Their urgent consignments are typically spares, tooling and electronic components going to quaysides, operations bases or other factories.
Hull also has an established manufacturing base. Reckitt has a long-standing site in the city, and medical device, chemical, food and caravan manufacturers are spread across the city and East Riding. Industrial areas such as Sutton Fields in the north of the city and the estates along Hedon Road and the A63 generate steady same-day work. Our manufacturing and engineering courier page covers line-down parts and tooling runs. Chilled seafood and food products can travel by refrigerated van, with the temperature range agreed at booking.

Hospitals and the university
Hull University Teaching Hospitals runs Hull Royal Infirmary on Anlaby Road and Castle Hill Hospital at Cottingham. The University of Hull's campus is on Cottingham Road in the north of the city. Samples, research materials and equipment move between these sites and laboratories across the north, and each needs the right department and contact at the delivery end.
Getting around Hull
The A63 is the city's spine, carrying M62 traffic through the centre on Castle Street to the eastern docks; it has recently been rebuilt around the Mytongate junction, but it still slows at peak times. The A1079 heads to York, the A165 runs north to Bridlington, and the A15 crosses the Humber Bridge towards Lincolnshire. Hedon Road is busy with port traffic at shift changes.

FAQ
Common questions
Can you take a consignment from Hull to the Netherlands by van?
Yes. Our European courier service sends a dedicated van from collection to the EU delivery address, with the driver staying with the goods. We choose the crossing when we plan the job; from Hull, the overnight ferry to Rotterdam is often the logical route for Dutch, Belgian and German addresses. Export and import declarations must be arranged before the van leaves, so have your commercial invoice, EORI number and commodity codes ready.
Our freight booking leaves on tonight's ferry. Can you get the goods to the haulier in time?
Usually, if they can be collected early enough. Give us the haulier or forwarder's address at the port, their reference, and the latest time they will accept goods for that sailing. We deliver to the landside point they specify and the receiving clerk signs for it. Ports run strict delivery windows, so we will tell you at booking whether the estimated collection time leaves enough margin.
Do you deliver to Castle Hill Hospital as well as Hull Royal Infirmary?
Yes. Hull Royal Infirmary is on Anlaby Road near the city centre, and Castle Hill Hospital is at Cottingham, west of the city. They are separate sites with their own goods-in points, so give us the hospital, the building or department and the contact name. Clinical samples must be packaged to the required standard by the sender before collection.
Can you collect from across the Humber in North Lincolnshire?
Yes. We collect from and deliver to anywhere in mainland UK, so Barton-upon-Humber, Scunthorpe, Immingham and Grimsby are covered as normal. The Humber Bridge makes the crossing quick on most days. In very high winds, restrictions can apply to high-sided vehicles on the bridge, and we will plan around them if they affect your job.
Can a Hull business send goods to Leeds and York on the same run?
Yes. A run with several deliveries is booked as one job. York is about 38 miles from Hull on the A1079, and Leeds is about 60 miles along the A63 and M62. List the stops in the order you prefer and give a contact for each; we confirm the route and estimated timings at booking. See our York courier page for the far end.
