Delivering inside the walls

The historic centre of York is compact, crowded and largely closed to vehicles during the day. The council's footstreets restrict vehicles between 10.30 am and 5.00 pm, seven days a week, and individual streets add their own rules: Stonegate allows loading only in the early morning, and the Shambles only outside the restricted hours. For a shop, café or office inside the walls, the delivery plan starts with the clock, not the map.

That is where a dedicated van and a 24-hour service help. We book one vehicle and driver for your consignment, and it drives directly from collection to delivery, so you can choose a time that fits the street rather than a time that fits a parcel round. When you book, we find the nearest suitable vehicle and confirm an estimated collection time based on where it is.

Planning a city-centre drop

Give us the exact address, the street's loading rules if you know them, and where the recipient will meet the driver. If the delivery has to land during footstreet hours, we can deliver to the nearest permitted loading point for the recipient to collect on foot, by arrangement.

Science, health and research

York's knowledge economy generates a lot of small, important consignments. The University of York's campus at Heslington sits beside York Science Park, home to research and technology firms, and York St John University is just outside the walls. East of the city, Sand Hutton hosts the National Agri-Food Innovation Campus, with government and commercial laboratories working on food, plant and environmental science.

York Hospital on Wigginton Road is the main acute hospital, run by York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals. Samples, specimens and equipment move between these sites, other hospitals and laboratories elsewhere in the country. The sender packages them to the required standard; we collect, keep them moving directly and get a signature from the named recipient. Our medical and pharmaceutical courier page explains the preparation in more detail.

Rail, manufacturing and offices

York has been a railway city for nearly two centuries, and rail operators, engineering consultancies and suppliers still have offices around the station. Nestlé's factory on Haxby Road continues the city's confectionery history. Offices in the centre and at business parks around the ring road send contracts, tenders and IT equipment to other Yorkshire cities; our document courier service handles anything from one envelope to a box of bundles.

Retail parks and events

Clifton Moor in the north and Monks Cross in the north-east combine retail parks with trade and industrial units, and Designer Outlet York sits by the A64 in the south. Stock transfers between stores, launch-day deliveries and shop-fit materials are routine. See our retail and e-commerce courier page for store work. The racecourse on the Knavesmire and venues across the city also bring event deliveries, often in the evening or before dawn. Race meetings bring heavy traffic to the southern side of the city, around the A64 and the Tadcaster Road, so a delivery near the Knavesmire on a race day needs extra time built in.

Roads in and around York

  • A64 runs as a dual carriageway around the south and east of the city, linking to Leeds and the A1(M) in the west and Malton and Scarborough in the east.
  • A1237 outer ring road around the north is the main pinch point: much of it is single carriageway with a long chain of roundabouts.
  • A19 heads north to Thirsk and Teesside, and south to Selby.
  • A59 runs west to Harrogate, and the A1079 east to Hull.

FAQ

Common questions

Can you deliver to a shop on Stonegate or another footstreet?

Yes, but the timing has to fit the footstreet rules. Vehicles are restricted in York's pedestrian zone between 10.30 am and 5.00 pm every day, and some streets have their own loading windows; Stonegate, for example, allows loading in the early morning only. We run 24 hours a day, so an early delivery before the restriction starts is usually the simplest answer. Tell us the shop's address and any loading instructions when you book.

We have samples for a laboratory at Sand Hutton. Can you collect them from the university this afternoon?

Yes. Sand Hutton, home to the National Agri-Food Innovation Campus, is a short run east of York off the A64 and A166. Pack the samples to the standard the laboratory and the regulations require, label them with the receiving department and contact, and tell us if they must stay chilled. Give us the latest time the laboratory can receive.

Our deadline is 4.00 pm at a client's office in Leeds. When should we book?

As early as you can. Leeds is about 25 miles from York on the A64, which on a clear road is well under an hour, but the A64 approach to Leeds and the York ring road both slow badly at peak times. Book with the deadline and we will confirm an estimated collection time based on the nearest suitable vehicle, so you know straight away whether 4.00 pm is safe.

Can you run a regular delivery between our York office and sites around North Yorkshire?

Yes. Daily or weekly runs at set times between York, Harrogate, Selby, Malton or Scarborough are often easier as a scheduled courier arrangement than as individual bookings. Business accounts with invoicing are available for approved businesses, subject to credit checks.

Will any road charges or access rules in York affect my delivery?

If any charge applies to a route, it is included in your quote rather than added later. In practice, York's access restrictions in the centre, including the footstreets and some permanently closed streets, matter more to delivery timings than charges do, so tell us the exact address and any loading arrangements when you book.
