Coventry consignments are mostly things that do not exist anywhere else yet

Coventry has been a vehicle city for more than a century, and its courier work still reflects that. The difference now is that much of it is prototype work. A single machined part for a test vehicle, a set of samples for a materials laboratory, or a fixture that a supplier has made to a drawing: if it goes missing, there is no replacement on a shelf.

For that reason most of our Coventry work is direct and dedicated. One van and one driver collect, and the consignment does not leave their care until it is signed for. When you book, we allocate the nearest suitable vehicle and confirm an estimated collection time based on where it is.

The engineering map of Coventry

Whitley

Jaguar Land Rover's global headquarters and engineering centre is at Whitley, on the south side of the city near the A45 and A46. Suppliers, test houses and design consultancies send prototype parts, test samples and documents in and out of the area every day. Site security will usually want a delivery reference or a named contact before a vehicle is let through, so include those in the booking.

Ansty Park

Ansty Park, next to M6 junction 2 and the M69 on the north-east edge of the city, is home to the Manufacturing Technology Centre, LEVC (the maker of the electric London taxi) and Cadent's headquarters. It is an engineering and research site rather than a distribution park, so the typical job is a small but valuable consignment: a demonstrator part going to a customer, test pieces for evaluation, or kit for a trade show.

Baginton and the battery sector

The UK Battery Industrialisation Centre sits beside Coventry Airport at Baginton, just outside the city boundary. Together with research at the University of Warwick, it has made the Coventry area a focus for battery and electrification work. Many of the goods moving around this sector are ordinary engineering consignments: tooling, test rigs, enclosures, electronics, documents. Lithium cells and modules are a different matter, and as dangerous goods they need a specialist carrier.

The University of Warwick

The University of Warwick campus lies on the southern edge of the city, and WMG, its manufacturing and engineering group, works closely with the automotive industry. Deliveries here go to particular buildings and goods-in points, so a precise address matters. Coventry University in the city centre adds research, engineering and student-related traffic of its own.

Line-side and supply chain work

Coventry sits in the middle of a dense supply chain that stretches from Solihull and the Black Country to Leicestershire and Northamptonshire. When a supplier misses a delivery, we are typically asked to move a handful of boxes or one stillage from a Midlands factory to a plant's goods-in before the shift changes. Read how we plan line-side work on our automotive courier page, and our manufacturing and engineering courier page covers heavier and more awkward loads.

Distribution sites around the city, including Prologis Park Ryton to the south-east, also need same-day vans when network trailers are full or an order misses its cut-off. Pallets, cages and mixed stock are all handled in the same direct way.

Prototype parts

Label prototype parts with a reference number rather than a description if the project is confidential, and give the driver the name of a specific person to hand them to. The proof of delivery then records exactly who received them and when.

Hospitals and the city centre

University Hospital Coventry, on the Walsgrave site in the east of the city, is the city's main acute hospital and a regional specialist centre. Department, building and recipient names make hospital deliveries far quicker.

The city centre is enclosed by the A4053 ring road, whose junctions are close together and can be confusing for drivers who do not use them regularly. Elsewhere, the A45 and A46 junction at Tollbar End and the M6 between junctions 2 and 3 are the usual places to lose time at peak hours.

FAQ

Common questions

Can you move battery cells or modules for us?

It depends on what they are. Lithium batteries are classed as dangerous goods for transport, and we do not carry hazardous or ADR consignments. Prototype modules and cells, and damaged or defective batteries in particular, need a carrier licensed for dangerous goods. We can carry non-hazardous items for battery projects, such as tooling, test fixtures, enclosures, electronics without cells and documents, in the same way as any other engineering consignment.

We have prototype parts going between Whitley and a supplier. Can the driver wait while they are inspected?

Yes, if you book it as a wait and return. Tell us roughly how long the inspection or handover will take and whether the parts are coming back. The van and driver stay with the job, so the parts are never left at a depot. Waiting time is part of the fixed price we agree before collection, so there is no surprise afterwards.

Can you deliver to a department at the University of Warwick?

Yes. The campus is large and spreads across the city boundary into Warwickshire, so give us the building name, the department, the recipient and a mobile phone number. Goods for research groups and WMG usually go to a specific goods-in point or reception rather than a general address. Refrigerated vans are available for samples that must stay chilled.

How long does it take to get from Coventry to London?

Central London is roughly 95 to 100 road miles from Coventry, via the M6 and M1 or the M45 and M1. Journey time depends heavily on the time of day and the final few miles into London. Book early, give us the latest acceptable delivery time and the exact delivery entrance, and we will plan the route and confirm the estimated timings.

Do you run deliveries overnight for early-morning shifts?

Yes. We operate 24 hours a day, every day of the year, so a part collected late in the evening can be on site before the morning shift. Our overnight courier page explains how same-night and early-morning deliveries work.
