Worcester sits between two motorway junctions and a river

Getting in and out of Worcester is mostly a question of which side of the Severn you are on and which M5 junction you need. Junction 6 serves the north and east of the city, including Warndon and the Worcester Six business park. Junction 7 serves the south, the A44 and Worcestershire Parkway station. West of the river, everything has to cross either Worcester Bridge in the city centre or Carrington Bridge on the A4440 Southern Link Road.

Once your consignment is loaded, none of that is your problem. One van and one driver take it directly to the delivery address, with no depot stop. We tell you the estimated collection time at the point of booking, worked out from where the nearest suitable vehicle is.

Engineering at Warndon and Worcester Six

The north-east of the city, around M5 junction 6, is where Worcester's larger manufacturers are. Yamazaki Mazak builds machine tools at its factory on Badgeworth Drive, and Worcester Bosch makes boilers and heating products in Warndon. Around them are business parks such as Berkeley Business Park off Wainwright Road, and the newer Worcester Six development beside the motorway.

For a courier, those sites generate a particular kind of urgent job:

  • a replacement control board or spindle going out to a customer whose machine has stopped
  • engineering samples and prototype parts heading to a test facility or a supplier for inspection
  • a short run of components from a local subcontractor needed on the assembly line before the next shift
  • heating spares and literature for an installer, a merchant or a trade show

These are often heavy, dense items. A boxed controller may weigh little, but a spindle or a pallet of castings may not, so we ask for weights at booking and match the vehicle accordingly. Our manufacturing and engineering courier page explains how we load and secure industrial consignments.

Blackpole and the trade estates

Blackpole, north of the city centre, is an older industrial area of workshops, trade counters, builders' merchants and small manufacturers. Typical jobs from here are a few boxes of stock for a branch that has run short, a pallet that missed its network collection, or tools and materials for a site elsewhere in the Midlands.

For loose boxes and smaller items, our same-day parcel courier service sends a small van straight to the recipient. For pallets, ask about a van with enough floor space and, for sites without a forklift, a tail lift.

City centre, hospital and university

Worcester's centre has law firms, accountants, estate agents and council offices, and much of their urgent work is paper: signed contracts, completion documents and planning submissions. Deliveries into the centre are slowed more by the one-way system and loading restrictions than by distance.

Worcestershire Royal Hospital on Charles Hastings Way is the county's main acute hospital. The University of Worcester has its main campus at St John's and further sites in the city centre. Hospital and university deliveries go more smoothly when the booking names the building, the department and the person receiving them.

Severn floods

The Severn floods in Worcester most winters, and riverside roads and car parks can close at short notice. If your address is near the river and the forecast is poor, give us an alternative delivery point or a contact who can meet the driver.

FAQ

Common questions

We are on the west side of the river. Does that make a difference?

It can add time at peak hours. Worcester has two road bridges over the Severn: Worcester Bridge in the city centre and Carrington Bridge on the A4440 Southern Link Road. Both queue in the morning and evening rush. Tell us your latest acceptable delivery time, not just the destination, and we will plan a realistic collection and route from St John's or the villages beyond.

Can you collect a machine tool spindle or controller for repair?

Yes, if it is packed for transport. Spindles, drives and control units are heavy for their size and sensitive to knocks, so they should be crated or palletised and strapped, ideally in the manufacturer's packaging. Tell us the weight and dimensions and whether there is a forklift at both ends. We can then send an SWB van, an LWB van or a Luton van with a tail lift as required.

Do you deliver to Worcestershire Royal Hospital?

Yes. The hospital is on Charles Hastings Way on the east side of the city, close to the A4440. Give us the department and the recipient's name, as most items go to a specific goods-in point or ward rather than the main entrance. Samples and medicines must be packaged by the sender before collection.

Can you cover Malvern, Droitwich and Evesham too?

Yes. We collect and deliver anywhere in mainland UK, so Malvern, Droitwich Spa, Evesham, Pershore, Kidderminster and Redditch are covered in exactly the same way as Worcester. Each job is a dedicated van, allocated from wherever the nearest suitable vehicle happens to be when you book.

We have a regular Friday run to a customer in Birmingham. Can you do that every week?

Yes. A recurring collection at the same time each week can be set up as a scheduled run. Birmingham is about 30 miles up the M5, so a Friday afternoon collection normally delivers the same afternoon. See our scheduled courier page for how regular runs work, and our business accounts page if you would prefer to be invoiced.
