On the road to Felixstowe

The A14 is the reason Kettering looks the way it does. It runs past the south of the town, linking the M1 and M6 near Rugby with Cambridge, Ipswich and the Port of Felixstowe, and it carries a heavy flow of container traffic between the port and the Midlands. Warehouses and distribution centres have grown up beside its junctions, along with food manufacturers who value the road and the wide catchment it gives them.

Kettering's industrial areas reflect that. Telford Way Industrial Estate, on the north side of the town, and Pytchley Lodge Industrial Estate, in the south near the A14, house distribution, manufacturing and trade businesses. A few miles south, Burton Latimer is home to the Weetabix factory, and Corby, to the north, has the large steel tube works and a cluster of its own distribution sites.

Shoemaking still has a place here too. Kettering, Rothwell and Desborough are part of the same Northamptonshire footwear tradition as Northampton, and their workshops send samples and finished orders to buyers at short notice.

What Kettering sends in a hurry

Mostly pallets and stock from warehouses that a scheduled network run cannot deliver in time. After that come spares for food production lines, chilled samples and short-dated products, and medical consignments to and from Kettering General Hospital. Each one travels in a single dedicated van, straight from your door to the named recipient.

  • Orders the network cannot reach in time. Goods promised to a customer today, or a shortfall at a branch, that a scheduled run will not deliver until tomorrow.
  • Food plant spares. A sensor, a belt or a pump for a line that cannot restart without it. Food factories run long shifts, and so do we: deliveries late in the evening or in the small hours are part of normal work.
  • Chilled samples and products. Our refrigerated courier service suits samples for retailers' quality teams and short-dated goods that cannot wait.
  • Medical and clinical consignments. Kettering General Hospital, on Rothwell Road, is the main acute hospital for the north of the county, and supplies and equipment move between it and other sites.

The driver loads at your door, goes directly to the address you give us and gets a signature from the person you named. Which van we send depends on what is nearest and big enough, and we tell you its estimated collection time on the call.

A Kettering warehouse collection

  • Collection reference and the right goods-out door
  • Number of pallets, their footprint, height and weight
  • Delivery slot or booking reference at the receiving site
  • Whether a tail lift is needed at either end

For pallet loads, our pallet delivery page explains how many fit each van and why weight is often the limit. If a consignment does not have to arrive today, a next-day courier booking with a timed delivery can be the better choice.

Roads and pinch points

The A14 passes Kettering between junctions 7 and 10, with the A43 heading north to Corby and south-west to Northampton, the A6 running north to Market Harborough and south to Bedford, and the A509 linking the town to Wellingborough and on towards Milton Keynes. The A14 junctions at the edge of town, especially where the A43 and A6 join, back up at peak times. The M1 is about 20 miles west.

Because so much of the A14's traffic is heavy goods vehicles heading to and from the port, a single breakdown or collision can slow it for hours, and there is no motorway alternative close by. When that happens we reroute where a sensible option exists, using the A6, A43 or A605, and we keep you updated during the job so the recipient knows what to expect.

FAQ

Common questions

Our import container is at Felixstowe and one pallet is urgent. Can you collect it and bring it to Kettering?

Yes, provided the pallet has been released and is available from a landside warehouse or depot your forwarder names. Felixstowe is about 105 miles east of Kettering along the A14, so a morning collection can usually be with you in the afternoon. We do not collect from inside the container terminal itself, so ask your agent to have the pallet unpacked and ready, with the release reference.

We are a food manufacturer near Kettering. Can you move chilled samples to a retailer's head office?

Yes. Tell us the range the samples must stay within and we send a refrigerated van set to it; most chilled food sits somewhere around 2–8 °C, but the agreed figure is yours. Pack the samples in sealed, labelled containers and tell us whether the retailer's reception or a test kitchen should receive them. The recipient signs on arrival, so you know exactly when they were handed over.

Do you collect from Corby, Wellingborough and Burton Latimer?

Yes. Corby, Wellingborough, Burton Latimer, Rothwell, Desborough, Thrapston and the villages around them are all covered in the same way as Kettering. There is no minimum distance and no zone system: the closest suitable van is sent, and you agree the price before it arrives.

Our van needs to get to Cambridge by 11.00 am. Is the A14 reliable enough?

Mostly, since the upgrade around Huntingdon, but it still has bad days. Cambridge is around 50 miles from Kettering on the A14, about an hour's drive in clear traffic. Incidents near the A1 junction or the Cambridge end can add a lot of time, so for a fixed deadline we plan a margin into the collection time. Tell us the latest acceptable arrival when you book.
