Planning a courier from a city without a motorway

Lincoln sits about 17 miles north-east of Newark and the A1, and no motorway comes close. For a business here, that shapes everything about shipping. Parcel networks tend to route Lincolnshire freight through hubs elsewhere, adding a day, and a rushed same-day job lives or dies on how quickly a van can reach the A46 or the A15.

Our model suits that geography. One vehicle and driver are booked for your consignment and drive from your door to the delivery address without a sorting stop. When you book, we find the nearest suitable vehicle and confirm an estimated collection time based on where it is, so you know before committing whether the deadline is realistic.

Who sends urgent consignments from Lincoln?

Mainly engineering, food and health. Turbine engineers on the Ruston site and their suppliers send parts and documents for outages, food producers send chilled samples and short-dated orders, and Lincoln County Hospital and the city's two universities move clinical and research consignments between sites.

Engineering and power

Lincoln has a long engineering history, and gas turbine work continues on the Ruston site, where Siemens Energy designs, builds and overhauls industrial turbines. Around it are machine shops, fabricators and component suppliers serving energy, defence and agricultural customers. Their urgent jobs are usually a part, a tool or a set of documents that someone else's outage or shutdown depends on. Our manufacturing and engineering courier page covers how those runs are set up.

Food, farming and produce

Greater Lincolnshire is one of the UK's main food-producing areas, from vegetables and salad crops to food processing further afield around the coast and the Fens. Same-day work here often means chilled samples going to a retailer's technical team, a short-dated delivery that missed its trailer, or ingredients for a production run. For temperature-controlled loads, see our refrigerated courier service.

Health, education and the public sector

Lincoln County Hospital on Greetwell Road is the city's main acute hospital. The University of Lincoln's campus is beside Brayford Pool, with Bishop Grosseteste University up the hill near the cathedral. Hospital, laboratory and research consignments need packaging and a named department at both ends; our medical courier page explains what the sender is responsible for.

Before you book a Lincoln collection

Give us the postcode, the latest acceptable delivery time and the weight and size of the consignment. For a rural collection, add any access notes. Those four details are what decide the vehicle and whether a same-day delivery works.

Roads in and out of Lincoln

The Lincoln Eastern Bypass, opened in 2020, takes traffic around the east of the city between the A158 Wragby road and the A15 Sleaford road. The A46 relief road loops around the west and north, and the A46 also runs south-west to Newark and the A1, then on to Nottingham and Leicester. The A15 heads north towards the Humber Bridge and south towards Sleaford and Peterborough. The A57 heads west towards Worksop and the M1, and the A158 runs east to the coast.

The slow points are the city's river and rail crossings, the roads up to the uphill area around the cathedral and castle, and the A46 roundabouts at busy times. Much of the historic centre is narrow, and some streets have access restrictions, so tell us about loading arrangements at a city-centre address. Steep Hill, the street linking the lower town to the cathedral quarter, is famously narrow and steep, and deliveries to businesses at the top are often easier from the uphill side.

FAQ

Common questions

Why does a parcel from Lincoln often take longer than one from a motorway town?

Because network parcels from Lincoln usually travel out to a regional hub before being sorted and sent on, and the nearest motorway is some distance away. A dedicated van skips the hub. It collects from you and drives the shortest practical route to the recipient, so a Lincoln consignment can reach Leeds, Birmingham or London the same day. Our guide to dedicated couriers and parcel networks explains the difference.

Can you move chilled produce from a Lincolnshire packhouse to a customer today?

Yes, if a refrigerated van is available for the timing you need. Tell us the product, the number of cases or pallets, the temperature range your customer requires and the delivery slot. We agree the range with you at booking; typical chilled ranges are 2–8 °C. Pre-cool the product before collection, because a van holds temperature rather than bringing warm stock down.

Do you collect from villages and farms outside Lincoln?

Yes. We collect from and deliver to anywhere in mainland UK, so rural addresses across Lincolnshire are covered in the same way as the city. Give us a postcode and clear directions, especially for farms and business units down private tracks, and tell us about any height or width limits on the approach so we send a van that can get in.

Can you deliver to RAF Waddington or another military site?

We can deliver to the address you give us, but military sites control access tightly. The person receiving the consignment must arrange entry in advance, usually by registering the delivery with the guardroom or a designated goods-in point. Give us the contact name, the reference they have set up and any instructions about where the driver should report. Without prior arrangement, a driver may be turned away at the gate.

How long does a run from Lincoln to central London take?

Central London is about 145 road miles away, mostly via the A46 and the A1, then the M25 or A1(M) depending on the destination. Journey time depends heavily on the time of day and London traffic at the far end. Give us your deadline when you book and we will tell you whether the timing works from the estimated collection time.
