Hereford's problem is distance, not traffic

Herefordshire is one of the most rural counties in England, and Hereford is its only city. The nearest motorway is the M50 at Ross-on-Wye, about 15 miles south, and every other main road out of the city is an A road: the A49 north to Leominster and Shrewsbury, the A465 south-west to Abergavenny, the A438 west towards Brecon and the A4103 east to Worcester.

That means parcel networks that route everything through a central hub can add a day to anything going in or out. A dedicated van avoids that. It collects from you and drives directly to the delivery address, whether that is a factory in the Black Country, a supermarket distribution centre in the Midlands or an office in Cardiff. We confirm an estimated collection time when you book, based on where the nearest suitable vehicle is.

Rotherwas and Skylon Park

The Rotherwas Industrial Estate south-east of the city centre is Hereford's main concentration of manufacturing and trade. Part of it forms Skylon Park, the Hereford Enterprise Zone, which includes the Hereford Cyber Quarter and the Shell Store incubation centre. Businesses here range from engineering workshops and food processors to technology start-ups.

Urgent jobs from Rotherwas tend to be one of two kinds. Either something has broken and a replacement must arrive before a shift is lost, or a finished batch must reach a customer by a fixed time. The Rotherwas Access Road links the estate to the A49 south of the river, which is handy for runs heading towards Ross and the M50.

Food, drink and chilled loads

Food and drink is central to the county's economy. Heineken's Bulmers cider mill is in Hereford, Avara Foods has a large poultry operation in the city, and orchards, dairies, growers and small producers are spread across the surrounding countryside.

Food producers usually need us for:

  • a short-notice top-up order to a retailer or wholesaler whose regular delivery has fallen through
  • samples for a buyer's tasting or a trade show
  • chilled stock moved between a producer and a packer or cold store

For anything temperature-sensitive, our refrigerated courier service uses insulated, temperature-controlled vans. We agree the range with you before collection. Pallets of ambient goods such as bottled cider or packaged products are covered by our pallet delivery service.

Ready for a chilled collection

  • Goods pre-chilled to the agreed temperature
  • Cases sealed and labelled with the delivery address
  • Any delivery booking reference from the customer's depot
  • A named contact and mobile phone number at both ends

Metals and engineering

Hereford also has a long-established metals and engineering base. Special Metals Wiggin makes nickel alloys in the city, and Painter Brothers fabricates galvanised steel structures. Suppliers and subcontractors serving firms like these send tooling, test pieces, spares and small batches of finished work across the country.

Heavy, dense items need the right vehicle. Tell us the weight of each piece and whether there is a forklift at both ends. A Luton van with a tail lift helps where the receiving site has no dock. Our manufacturing and engineering courier page goes into loading and securing in more detail.

The hospital, colleges and the city centre

Hereford County Hospital is the county's acute hospital, and deliveries there should always name the department and the recipient. The city also has NMITE, the engineering-focused higher education institution that took its first students in 2021, Hereford College of Arts and the Royal National College for the Blind.

In the centre, the A49 crosses the Wye on Greyfriars Bridge, which is the main point of delay. The city link road on the north side opened in 2017, but the A49 through the centre is still slow at peak times, so we plan collection and delivery times with that in mind.

FAQ

Common questions

Our farm is miles outside Hereford with no proper postcode. Can you still collect?

Yes. Rural postcodes often cover a wide area, so give us a what3words reference or directions to the right yard, barn or gate, plus a mobile phone number for whoever will be there. Say whether the track is suitable for a large van. If it is not, we can send a smaller vehicle or agree a collection point at the road end.

Can you carry chilled produce from Herefordshire to a London customer?

Yes, in a refrigerated van. We agree the temperature range with you at booking; typical chilled ranges are 2–8 °C. Have the goods pre-chilled and packed before the vehicle arrives, because a refrigerated van holds a temperature far better than it pulls one down. London is roughly 135 road miles away, so a morning collection is best for same-day delivery.

How do you get round the traffic on the A49 through Hereford?

Partly by timing and partly by route. Greyfriars Bridge carries the A49 over the Wye and is the main road crossing in the city, so it backs up at peak times. For collections at Rotherwas, the Rotherwas Access Road reaches the A49 south of the river, which avoids the city centre for runs heading towards Ross-on-Wye and the M50.

A tractor has broken down at harvest. Can you fetch the part from a dealer today?

Usually, yes. Agricultural dealers and parts distributors are spread across the Midlands and the Welsh borders, and a direct van can collect from the dealer and bring the part to the farm or to your mechanic the same day. Give us the dealer's address, the part's weight and size, and an on-site contact who will be able to receive it.
