Telford was built for making things

Telford grew as a new town from the late 1960s, and its industrial estates were planned in from the start. Halesfield opened in the south-east, Stafford Park to the east of the town centre, and Hortonwood in the north. Priorslee, next to the M54, followed. Today these estates hold manufacturers, distribution centres, engineering subcontractors and trade suppliers, and they are where most of Telford's urgent courier work begins.

The model is simple. One van and one driver are booked for your consignment and go directly from collection to delivery, with no depot or hub. We confirm an estimated collection time when you book, based on where the nearest suitable vehicle is at that moment.

When the line stops

The most urgent Telford call is usually a stopped production line. A conveyor motor has failed, a supplier's delivery has not arrived, or a batch of components has been rejected. Every hour costs money, and the part is often 50 or 100 miles away.

The things that make the difference on these jobs:

  • The exact delivery point. Large plants have gatehouses, goods-in bays and line-side drop points. Tell us which one.
  • The person releasing the part. If the supplier's stores do not know the part is being collected, the driver waits.
  • Weight and dimensions. A motor or gearbox can be heavier than it looks, and the van must be right first time.
  • Booking references. Many plants will not accept goods without one.

Our manufacturing and engineering courier page sets this out in more detail, and our guide on how to prepare goods for urgent collection covers packing at short notice.

Who is on the estates

Telford's manufacturers include several large international firms. Denso has a manufacturing plant in the town, Makita makes power tools here, and Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land, the military vehicle joint venture, has its headquarters in Telford. Around them are plastics moulders, metal finishers, electronics assemblers and engineering subcontractors, many of them in the automotive supply chain. Our automotive courier page explains how we handle parts going to and from vehicle plants.

Distribution and warehousing sit alongside the factories. For a pallet that missed a network collection, or stock needed at a store or customer the same day, see our pallet delivery service, which sets out the pallet capacity of each van.

Heavy single items

For machinery parts that cannot be lifted by hand, check there is a forklift at both ends before you book. If the receiving site has none, ask for a Luton van with a tail lift. Tail lifts are typically rated to around 500 kg.

The town centre, hospital and university

Telford town centre, around Southwater and the shopping centre, holds council offices, professional firms and retail. Telford International Centre, close to Southwater, hosts exhibitions, conferences and events.

The Princess Royal Hospital at Apley Castle is Telford's acute hospital, working alongside the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. The University of Wolverhampton has a campus at Priorslee, and Harper Adams University, the agricultural and engineering university, is near Newport to the north-east.

Roads in and out of Telford

The M54 runs along the southern edge of the town from the M6 at junction 10A to Wellington, where it becomes the A5 towards Shrewsbury and Wales. The A442 runs north to south through the town, linking Hortonwood and Hadley with Halesfield and Bridgnorth. The M54 is usually free-flowing, so the main points of delay are at its eastern end, where it meets the M6, and on the A5 around Shrewsbury.

FAQ

Common questions

Our line in Hortonwood is down and the part is with a supplier in Coventry. What happens next?

Book the job with both addresses, the part's weight and size, the name of the person releasing it and the goods-in point at your end. We allocate the nearest suitable van, confirm the estimated collection time, and the driver goes straight from the supplier to you. Coventry is about 60 road miles away via the M6 and M54. You get live updates during the run and a signed proof of delivery.

Which M54 junction should the driver use?

Junction 4 serves Priorslee, Stafford Park and Halesfield to the south and east; junction 5 is the town centre exit; junction 6 serves Wellington, Hadley and Hortonwood. You do not need to tell the driver which to use, but it helps to give the unit number and the estate road, because estate signage changes and some units have entrances on more than one side.

Can you take exhibition stands to and from Telford International Centre?

Yes. Exhibitors often need stand kit, graphics and literature delivered during build-up and collected at break-down. Give us the hall, stand number and the organiser's delivery times. A Luton van with a tail lift suits most modular stands. Our events and exhibitions courier page explains how show deliveries work.

Can you deliver to rural Shropshire addresses as well?

Yes. We cover all of mainland UK, so Shrewsbury, Bridgnorth, Newport, Ludlow, Oswestry and the farms and villages around them are covered as standard. For rural addresses, give us directions or a what3words reference, a mobile phone number, and tell us if access is narrow or unsuitable for a larger van.
