A town that makes and tests things

Loughborough is better known for its university than for its industry, but it has plenty of both. The university's large campus on the west side of town has strong engineering, sports science and design departments, and the Loughborough University Science and Enterprise Park next to it houses technology companies that grew out of that research.

Industry runs deeper still. The Falcon Works on Nottingham Road has built electrical machines for well over a century, John Taylor's bell foundry still casts bells in the town, and the Charnwood Campus on Bakewell Road, once a pharmaceutical research site, now hosts life sciences and technology firms. Smaller engineering, plastics and food businesses fill the industrial streets around it in the north of the town.

That combination means urgent jobs here often involve something delicate or one of a kind: a prototype heading to a test house, a scientific instrument returning from calibration, a replacement drive for a stopped machine. We send one dedicated van for each consignment, collecting from you and driving straight to the delivery address. At the point of booking we check which suitable van is closest and tell you roughly when it will reach you.

Consignments from the campus and science park

Research equipment rarely travels well in a parcel network. It is awkward, often valuable and sometimes irreplaceable, and it needs someone at the other end who knows what it is. With a dedicated van the item stays in one vehicle from collection to handover, with no sorting belts and no transfers. Our fragile and high-value courier page explains how we approach goods where condition on arrival is the whole point.

A few things make campus collections go smoothly:

  • The right building. University campuses are large. Give us the building name, the nearest car park or loading bay and a mobile number for the person handing over.
  • Packing before the van arrives. Instruments should be crated or boxed with internal protection. Our guide to packaging fragile items covers the basics.
  • The recipient's details. A named person and department at the other end avoids an item sitting unclaimed in a post room.

Factories, trade counters and the M1

Loughborough's manufacturers mostly need speed and the right vehicle. A gearbox, a set of castings or a pallet of components can go in a short- or long-wheelbase van; heavier crates suit a Luton with a tail lift. For line stoppages and planned maintenance shutdowns alike, the manufacturing and engineering courier page describes how we work with goods-in teams and gatehouses.

Shutdown weekends

If your plant is doing planned maintenance over a weekend, book the delivery of spares in advance and give us the out-of-hours contact. We run 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so a Saturday night delivery to a shift engineer is routine.

Roads, airport and timings

Loughborough sits between M1 junctions 23 and 24. The A512 runs west from the town centre to junction 23, and the A6 heads north towards junction 24, Kegworth and East Midlands Airport, and south through Quorn to Leicester. The A60 goes north-east to Nottingham. The SEGRO logistics park and rail freight terminal at East Midlands Gateway is next to junction 24, a few minutes from the town. Expect the inner relief road and the A6 through the centre to be slow in the rush hours.

FAQ

Common questions

Our research group needs a prototype taken from campus to a test facility in another city today. How do we arrange it?

Give us the building and room on campus, a contact who can meet the driver, and the full delivery address with the recipient's name. Describe the item and how it is packed: delicate prototypes should be crated or boxed with cushioning so they survive the run without help. If it must stay upright or cannot be stacked, say so. Once the recipient has signed, the proof of delivery comes back to you.

Can you take a consignment from Loughborough to the cargo area at East Midlands Airport?

Yes. The airport is only about 9 miles away via the A6 and M1 junction 24. We deliver to the landside cargo or forwarder premises your agent specifies, and we do not carry out airside work. Have the air waybill or forwarder reference ready and make sure export paperwork is complete before collection, because cargo sheds will not accept a consignment without it.

Do you cover Shepshed, Quorn and the villages around Charnwood?

Yes. Shepshed by junction 23, Quorn, Mountsorrel, Sileby, Barrow upon Soar and the rest of Charnwood are collected in the same way as the town itself. The vehicle is allocated from wherever the nearest suitable van is when you book, and the price is fixed before collection whether the address is on a business park or down a farm track.

A machine at our Loughborough plant has stopped. Can you fetch the spare from a supplier in Sheffield?

Yes. Sheffield is about 55 miles up the M1, so a van collecting there mid-morning can normally be at your goods-in by early afternoon. Tell us the part's weight and size, the supplier's collection contact and whether a forklift is available at either end. If the item is heavy, we can send a Luton van with a tail lift.
