Metal, leather and locks

Walsall has made things for a very long time. The town is famous for leather, particularly saddlery and equestrian goods, and a handful of makers still supply riders and retailers around the world. Willenhall, on the western side of the borough, built its name on locks and security hardware. Across Darlaston, Aldridge and Bloxwich, foundries, fabricators, toolmakers and metal finishers carry on the Black Country's engineering tradition.

That industry moves heavy, awkward and often urgent consignments. A set of castings has to reach a machine shop before its next shift. A fabricated frame is needed on a construction site in Manchester. A replacement die is waiting at a press shop in Telford. Parcel networks are poorly suited to this kind of freight, because size, weight and urgency rarely fit their limits.

We send one dedicated van, sized to the load, which collects from your yard or goods-out and drives straight to the delivery address. The estimated collection time we quote depends on how far the nearest suitable van is from you when you call.

Industrial areas we collect from

Darlaston and junction 10

Darlaston, close to M6 junction 10, is one of the main industrial areas in the borough, with part of the Black Country Enterprise Zone around it. Units range from older works to modern sheds for manufacturing and distribution. The rebuilt junction has improved access, but the roads around it are still busy at shift times.

Aldridge and Brownhills

To the north-east, Aldridge has extensive industrial estates with metalworking, plastics and engineering firms, and Brownhills sits further north towards the A5 and the M6 Toll. Collections here often head for Lichfield, Tamworth and the A38.

The town centre and Bescot

Central Walsall has offices, the council and shops around the ring road. Bescot, south of the centre near M6 junction 9, has the football stadium, retail parks and trade units close to the motorway. Walsall Manor Hospital, west of the centre, is the main hospital for the borough, and the University of Wolverhampton has a campus on Gorway Road.

Before a heavy or long collection

  • Length, width, height and weight of each item
  • Whether a forklift is available at collection and delivery
  • Any lifting points or handling instructions
  • How the item is protected for the journey, especially finished surfaces
  • Site access times and a contact on the yard

Choosing the right vehicle

Vehicle choice matters more for Walsall freight than for most. Long sections need a long-wheelbase van; crates and heavy machinery parts often need a Luton with a tail lift. Our large item courier service covers bulky and awkward loads, the van size guide gives typical dimensions and payloads, and the manufacturing and engineering courier page describes how we work with production lines and maintenance teams.

Roads and timings

Walsall has three M6 junctions: junction 7 at Great Barr for the A34 and Birmingham, junction 9 at Bescot, and junction 10 for Darlaston and Wolverhampton. The A34 runs south to Birmingham and north to Cannock; the A454 runs west to Wolverhampton; and the A461 heads north-east to Lichfield. The M6 between junctions 7 and 10 is among the busiest stretches in the region, so we allow for it in every estimate.

FAQ

Common questions

We are in Darlaston. Is M6 junction 10 still a problem for collections?

Much less than it was. The junction was rebuilt with wider bridges and more lanes, and the work finished in 2024. It still gets heavy at peak times, as most of the Black Country's traffic joins the M6 nearby, so a collection at 8.00 am or 5.00 pm can take longer than one in the middle of the day. Our estimate at booking takes the time into account.

Our delivery is in central Birmingham. Will the Clean Air Zone affect the job?

Walsall itself is not in a Clean Air Zone, but Birmingham's zone covers the city centre inside the middle ring road. Most modern vans meet the emission standard, and if any charge applies to the vehicle we send, it is included in the fixed price you agree before collection. Central Birmingham is about 9 miles from Walsall via the A34 or M6.

We make saddlery and leather goods. Can you take an order to a customer in Newmarket today?

Yes. Newmarket is around 110 miles from Walsall, mostly via the M6 and A14, so a morning collection normally reaches a yard or shop the same afternoon. Box the goods so they arrive clean and undamaged, and tell us the recipient's name and whether a yard office or the house should receive them. The signature is recorded on arrival.

Can you collect long steel sections from an Aldridge fabricator?

Yes, as long as they fit a van. The load floor of a typical long-wheelbase van is about 3.4 metres, so sections up to roughly that length can travel flat; heavy bundles that need lowering at the far end suit a Luton with a tail lift. Tell us the length, weight and how many pieces, and whether your yard has a forklift. Anything longer than a van, or needing a crane to unload, is outside what we carry.
