Engineering consignments that cannot wait
Derby builds things that run on rails, fly and drive. The city's biggest names are public knowledge: Rolls-Royce makes civil aero engines in the south of the city, the Litchurch Lane works (operated by Alstom) has built trains for well over a century, and Toyota's car plant sits at Burnaston, just off the A38 to the south-west. Around them is a dense layer of machinists, fabricators, test houses, coating specialists and component distributors.
That supply chain generates a particular kind of urgent job. A part has failed inspection and its replacement must reach a customer before a shift starts. A set of drawings and a prototype are needed at a design meeting in Coventry tomorrow morning. A fixture has come back from calibration and a cell cannot restart until it arrives. In each case, a parcel network that sorts the item through a hub adds risk you do not need.
We send one dedicated van and driver for your consignment. It collects from your goods-out, drives directly to the delivery address and hands over to the named recipient, who signs for it. When you book, we look for the nearest suitable vehicle and confirm an estimated collection time based on where it is.
Where Derby's urgent work comes from
Mainly rail engineering, aerospace and automotive manufacturing. Rail firms send components to fixed maintenance windows, aerospace suppliers send small, expensive parts that must travel with their certificates, and car plants and their suppliers need a shortage covered before a just-in-time line stops.
Rail engineering
Derby's rail industry goes well beyond train building. The Railway Technical Centre on London Road, now a business park, houses rail engineering consultancies, testing firms and suppliers, and smaller rail businesses are spread across the city. Typical consignments are bogie and brake components, electronic control units, cable assemblies and sample sections going to depots and works elsewhere in the country, often to a maintenance window that is fixed weeks in advance.
Aerospace
Aerospace parts are usually small, precise and expensive, and they come with paperwork. A certificate of conformity or release note often has to travel with the part, and the receiving site may refuse it without one. Tell us what documents travel with the consignment, and our fragile and high-value courier service covers how we handle goods where condition and traceability matter.
Automotive and general manufacturing
Car plants and their suppliers work to just-in-time schedules, so a shortage can stop a line within hours. Our automotive courier page explains how line-side and trade-counter deliveries work, and the manufacturing and engineering courier page covers plant, tooling and spares runs more widely.
Before a Derby engineering collection
- Part number, quantity and the purchase order the recipient expects
- Weight and dimensions, including the crate or stillage
- Any certificate or release paperwork that must travel with it
- Whether a forklift is needed at collection or delivery
- The goods-in hours or gatehouse instructions at the delivery site
Offices, hospitals and the university
Not every Derby job is industrial. Pride Park, east of the station, has offices, car dealerships and the football stadium; legal and financial firms in the city centre send contracts and completion papers to other Midlands cities. The Royal Derby Hospital on Uttoxeter Road is the main acute hospital for the area, and the University of Derby's main campus is on Kedleston Road. For hospital and laboratory consignments, our medical and pharmaceutical courier page sets out what the sender needs to prepare.

Roads around Derby
The A38 runs north to south through the west of the city and links to the M1 at junction 28 and to Birmingham via Burton upon Trent. The A50 crosses the south of Derby, joining the M1 near junction 24 for East Midlands Airport and running west to Stoke-on-Trent and the M6. The A52, Brian Clough Way, links the centre to the M1 at junction 25 and on to Nottingham. The three A38 roundabouts at Kingsway, Markeaton and Little Eaton are the usual pinch points.

FAQ
Common questions
A supplier in Derby has a part we need on our line in Sunderland tonight. Can that be done?
Usually, yes. Sunderland is about 150 road miles from Derby, mostly on the M1 and A1(M), so an afternoon collection can still arrive the same evening. We run 24 hours a day, so a late delivery to a gatehouse or night shift is normal. Give us the gate, the goods-in contact and the order or line reference, and tell us the part's weight and dimensions so the right van is sent.
Can you collect from a unit on Infinity Park or Pride Park?
Yes. Both are business parks on the edge of the city, and most units have easy van access. Infinity Park sits on the southern side near the A50, and Pride Park is just east of the city centre off the A52. Give us the unit number and a contact name, because larger sites often have a security lodge where the driver must sign in before reaching goods-in.
We need test samples taken from Derby to a laboratory in Cambridge. How should they be packed?
Pack them so they survive a few hours in a van without help: rigid containers, cushioning and a clear label with the recipient's name and department. If the samples are biological, the sender must use compliant triple packaging before collection. Cambridge is roughly 100 miles from Derby via the A50, M1 and A14. See our Cambridge courier page for science park deliveries at the other end.
Do the A38 roundabouts cause delays for Derby collections?
They can. The Kingsway, Markeaton and Little Eaton roundabouts on the A38 are well-known slow points, especially at peak times and when there are events in the city, and a major upgrade of all three has been approved. We plan routes around them where an alternative exists, and the estimated collection and delivery times we give you at booking take the time of day into account.
Can you deliver a long or heavy component that won't fit a small van?
Yes, within the limits of van-sized vehicles. A long-wheelbase van takes items up to about 3.4 metres long, and a Luton van with a tail lift suits heavy crates that cannot be lifted by hand. We do not run lorries or cranes, so anything needing a forklift at both ends must have one available. Our van size guide gives typical dimensions and payloads.
