Small van, long-wheelbase van and Luton van in company livery

One conurbation, seven boroughs

The West Midlands metropolitan county is made up of Birmingham, Coventry, Wolverhampton, Solihull, Dudley, Walsall and Sandwell, which includes West Bromwich, Oldbury and Smethwick. On a map it is a single built-up area. In practice it is a patchwork of town centres, industrial estates, plants and hospitals joined by some of the busiest motorways in the country.

Much of the courier work here never leaves the county. A casting goes from a Black Country foundry to a machine shop in Coventry. Tooling moves between two of a manufacturer's own sites in Walsall and Solihull. Documents go from an Oldbury office to a Birmingham law firm. This page covers that cross-county work. For the three cities, see our dedicated pages for Birmingham, Coventry and Wolverhampton.

Every job is a dedicated van: one vehicle, one driver, collecting from you and going directly to the delivery address. When you book, we allocate the nearest suitable vehicle and confirm an estimated collection time based on where it is.

Short distances, slow roads

Few places in the region are more than 35 miles apart, but distance tells you little about timing. The motorway network around Birmingham carries regional, national and local traffic at once:

  • The M5/M6 interchange at Ray Hall (M6 junction 8) backs up when either motorway is busy.
  • The M6 between junctions 4 and 10, including the raised section through Gravelly Hill, is often slow at peak hours.
  • The M5 at junctions 1 and 2 around West Bromwich and Oldbury queues heavily in the morning and evening.
  • The Black Country Route and the A41 through Wednesbury and Bilston take local traffic between Wolverhampton, Dudley and Walsall.

Because of this, a cross-town run can take as long as a much longer motorway journey. Give us the latest acceptable delivery time when you book and we will plan the route and timing accordingly. For the region's slowest points, our guide to common causes of courier delays explains what we watch for.

What moves around the region

Mostly automotive parts for Jaguar Land Rover's plants and their suppliers, heavy metalwork from Black Country forges and fabricators, store stock and pallets for retail and distribution sites, and equipment for the region's large hospitals. Automotive jobs are often small and urgent: one stillage or a box of sensors before the next shift.

Vehicle manufacturing and its supply chain

Jaguar Land Rover's Solihull plant on Lode Lane, its Whitley headquarters in Coventry and its engine plant at i54 on the edge of Wolverhampton sit at the centre of a supply chain that reaches into every borough. When a supplier misses its slot the plant can stand idle, and the job we are called for is usually small: one stillage, a crate of fixings, a box of sensors, needed at goods-in before the next shift. The way we organise these runs is set out on our automotive courier page.

Black Country metalworking

Dudley, Sandwell and Walsall still have a strong base of forging, casting, pressing, fabrication and finishing businesses. Loads are often heavy for their size, so vehicle choice matters: a Luton van with a tail lift for sites without a dock, an LWB van for long items. Our manufacturing and engineering courier page covers the detail.

Retail and distribution

Merry Hill at Brierley Hill, the city centres and retail parks across the region generate store replenishment, display materials and late stock runs. Distribution sites just outside the county, such as Hams Hall in North Warwickshire, add pallet and cage work. For several stops in one trip, our multi-drop courier service plans the route before the van sets off.

Hospitals

The region's large hospitals include Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, University Hospital Coventry, New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton, Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley, Walsall Manor Hospital and the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital in Smethwick. Department and building names make deliveries much quicker, and clinical items must be packaged by the sender before collection.

Solihull, the airport and the NEC

Solihull borough includes Birmingham Airport, the NEC and Birmingham Business Park around M42 junction 6, and Blythe Valley Park near junction 4. Show weeks at the NEC change the traffic on the M42 and the airport junction, and organisers control access to the halls. If you are supplying an exhibition, give us the hall, stand number and delivery rules.

Birmingham's Clean Air Zone

Of the seven West Midlands boroughs, only Birmingham has a charging Clean Air Zone, covering the roads inside the A4540 Middleway. Any charge that applies to the vehicle on your job is included in the quote.

Typical cross-county journeys

Dudley to Birmingham Airport 22 miles M5, M42
Walsall to Solihull 18 miles M6, M42

FAQ

Common questions

My collection is in Dudley and the delivery is in Coventry. Will the van go through Birmingham's Clean Air Zone?

Not normally. The zone covers the roads inside the A4540 Middleway in central Birmingham, and a run from Dudley to Coventry would use the M5, M6 or M42 around the city instead. Where a job does have to go inside the Middleway, any charge for the van is already part of your quote.

We have five deliveries across the Black Country this afternoon. Can one van do them all?

Yes, as a multi-drop job. Give us all the addresses, the goods for each, and any deadlines or booking times, and we will plan the order of drops before the van arrives. Each drop gets its own signed proof of delivery. Our multi-drop courier page explains how routes are planned and priced.

Do you deliver to Jaguar Land Rover at Solihull?

We deliver to the goods-in points of large manufacturing sites in Solihull, including the plant on Lode Lane, provided you give us the delivery reference, the gate and the contact the site requires. Booking rules at vehicle plants are strict, and a missing reference is the most common reason a driver is held at the gatehouse.

Is it quicker to send something across the West Midlands or to London?

Distance is not the whole story. A 20-mile run from Walsall to Solihull at 5.00 pm can take longer than the first 60 miles towards London at mid-morning, because the M6 between junctions 4 and 10 and the M5/M6 interchange are among the busiest stretches of motorway in the region. That is why we ask for your deadline, not just the addresses.

We move tooling between our Walsall and Solihull sites daily. Can that be a fixed run?

Yes. Many West Midlands businesses have sites in two or three boroughs and move stock, tooling or post between them on a fixed timetable. We set those up as regular scheduled runs. See our scheduled courier service, and our business accounts page if you would like to be invoiced.
