Halfway between London and the coast
Canterbury is the last city on the old road from London to Dover. The A2 skirts its southern edge on the way to the port, the M2 ends a few miles to the west at Brenley Corner, and the A28 crosses the city from Ashford in the south-west to Thanet in the north-east. That puts Canterbury within easy reach of London, the Channel ports and the whole of east Kent, and it shapes the kind of work we see from the city.
Some consignments start in Canterbury and go west: samples, documents and equipment for London. Others pass through on their way to the coast, or come off the farms and glasshouses of east Kent heading for depots and wholesalers. For each, the model is the same. You book a dedicated vehicle, we allocate the closest suitable van and give you an estimated collection time, and it goes directly from your door to the delivery address.
Two universities and a hospital
Canterbury is a university city. The University of Kent sits on the hill to the north, and Canterbury Christ Church University occupies sites near the city centre. Kent and Canterbury Hospital, on the southern side of the city, is part of the network of east Kent hospitals alongside Ashford and Margate.
Between them, these institutions generate urgent but unglamorous work: an instrument going back to a manufacturer for repair, research samples bound for a partner lab, exam papers and documents, and supplies moving between hospital sites. Samples must be packaged by the sender before collection, with UN3373 Category B material in P650 triple packaging. Our medical and pharmaceutical courier page sets out how we handle clinical and research consignments.
East Kent produce
The land around Canterbury grows fruit, vegetables and hops, and the large glasshouses at Thanet Earth near Birchington are a short drive away. Most produce moves on scheduled trailers, but short-notice orders, missed loads and samples for buyers need a smaller, faster option.
Chilled loads from the farm gate
Pre-cool the produce before loading; a refrigerated van keeps goods at temperature but is not designed to pull hot produce down quickly. Tell us the range you need, the number of pallets or trays, and whether the receiving site has a dock or needs a tail lift. For ambient pallets, our pallet delivery page lists what each van carries.
Through to Dover, Folkestone and Europe
Dover is about 17 miles from Canterbury down the A2, and the Channel Tunnel terminal at Folkestone a similar distance away. Hauliers, freight forwarders and customs agents in both towns receive consignments from across Kent, and a Canterbury business that has missed a groupage cut-off can often still make a trailer if the goods reach the haulier's yard in time. We deliver to the address and contact your forwarder gives you.
For goods that need to reach the EU customer directly, a dedicated van can make the whole trip. Our guide to sending goods to Europe by road after Brexit explains the paperwork.
Local pinch points
- The ring road, especially around the Wincheap and Military Road roundabouts, at school and commuter times.
- The A28 level crossing at Sturry, which can hold traffic for some minutes when trains pass, on the route to Herne Bay and Thanet.
- The city centre, which is largely pedestrianised inside the walls, with restricted delivery hours.
The Wincheap Industrial Estate, off the A28 just south-west of the ring road, and Lakesview International Business Park at Hersden, east of the city, are the main trade and industrial areas.

FAQ
Common questions
Can you collect equipment from the University of Kent campus and take it to a London lab today?
Yes. The campus is on the hill north of the city, and central London is about 60 miles away via the A2 and M2. Give us the building, the goods entrance and the name of the person releasing the equipment, plus its weight and dimensions and whether it must stay upright. A morning collection normally reaches a London address the same working day.
We grow soft fruit near Canterbury. Can a chilled van take a short-notice order to a distribution centre?
Yes. Book a refrigerated van and tell us the temperature range the customer specifies; typical chilled ranges are 2–8 °C, and we agree yours at booking. Have the pallets or trays ready and pre-cooled, and send the DC's booking reference and slot time so the van can be booked in at the gatehouse.
Does traffic for the Channel ports affect deliveries in Canterbury itself?
It can. When the ports or the Channel Tunnel are disrupted, freight queues and traffic management on the M20 and around Dover push traffic on to the A2 and local roads. Canterbury addresses are usually still reachable, but journey times to and from the coast become less predictable. We watch the routes during the job and keep you informed if the arrival time changes.
Can you take a pallet from Canterbury straight to a customer in France or Belgium?
Yes. Our European courier service runs a dedicated van from the collection address to the EU delivery address, crossing via the short sea routes or the tunnel. Since Brexit, an export declaration and EU import formalities are needed, so have the commercial invoice, commodity codes and EORI numbers ready, and tell us which customs agent is handling the declarations.
